dan17 Posted 23 October, 2010 Posted 23 October, 2010 Be interested on peoples opinion on this..... Where would you say is the best position for AL to play? I can't help but feel he is slightly wasted on the left side of midfield (although he can clearly do a good job there). Our first goal basically came about because he decided to come into the middle and try and create - granted, he ended up on the right side drawing a foul, but you know what I mean. I am certainly not thinking he should play in centre mid cos he is, imo, too lightweight. But I think he could do so much for us just behind the centre forward (whoever it may be). Would we get away with Puncheon and Chamerlain on either wing and AL just behind the striker?? Would love to know what AL thinks would be his best position... thoughts anyone?
Saint_clark Posted 23 October, 2010 Posted 23 October, 2010 For me there's no doubt - centre midfield. He has the grit to get stuck in defensively and he's direct enough to attack from the centre. However, with the options we have he fits in best at LM.
RobM Posted 23 October, 2010 Posted 23 October, 2010 Just behind the forwards with a licence to roam. Then have Morgan in the middle and behind him for cover and distribution.
Graffito Posted 23 October, 2010 Posted 23 October, 2010 I agree with the OP. I think he would be very effective in the hole behind the CF.

This is what bothers me. I dont feel we have enough in cover to allow 2 forwards and Lallana behind them. I think it is either 2 forwards with AL on the left, or 1 forward with AL supporting.
Andy_Porter Posted 23 October, 2010 Posted 23 October, 2010 A 4-4-2 diamond with Lallana in a free role would be his best position IMO. As it is though, the 4-4-2/4-5-1 with Adam on the left swapping with Puncheon works very well.

If players are allowed to push forward on the attack, but have instruction to get back and defend when we, as a team, are defending you can avoid being exposed. It is a balancing act though.

I would play a 4-5-1 however or a 4-4-1-1 and allow Lallana that little bit of freedom behind the striker. Whatever happens we still need to keep our width. LM is a good position atm for adam, he did more than enough to impress me last year.
Jimmy_D Posted 23 October, 2010 Posted 23 October, 2010 I reckon he's most effective when he's allowed to swap positions along the midfield, he's got a good enough brain to find where the opposition are weak and he's our best player to exploit that weakness.
derry Posted 25 October, 2010 Posted 25 October, 2010 I would like to see him given the opportunity to play right sided central midfield alongside one of Hammond/Chaplow/Schneiderlin. He is now experienced enough and strong enough and could give us something positive that we are missing, it could also then allow Puncheon to play on his natural side and Chamberlain to play wide right.
SuperMikey Posted 25 October, 2010 Posted 25 October, 2010 He's having a great season at LM, not sure why we'd want to move him tbh.
Window Cleaner Posted 25 October, 2010 Posted 25 October, 2010 James Milner of the football league. he was crap yesterday, Milner that is.But then so were all of his team-mates,a billion £ you're having a laugh cos they still have to play young kids who don't have a clue what it is they're supposed to be doing.

In fact I would like to see all these suggestions put into practice, just once, we'd be 15 down at half time .We have a manager who is paid to pick the team and determine it's playing style. We need to leave the job to him .

Yup fair point, shut down the forum no point in discussion any more.

His tackling is nowhere near good enough for him to play as a CM. Case in point Oldham's goal on Saturday, AL makes a very lightweight attempt at a tackle, fails, thereby enabling Furman to play a 1-2 unopposed into the area and score. To be fair, Lallana creates a hell of a lot more goals than he's at fault for conceding, but I fear he'd let a lot more slip through the centre than our current CMs. Play him in Guly's position by all means, but not anywhere he needs to make a lot of tackles
SNSUN Posted 25 October, 2010 Posted 25 October, 2010 I wish we'd play Punch on the left and Adam on the right, as I feel Punch would be better whipping in crosses for Lambert rather than cutting in to try shooting, but Lallana is doing a good job on the left. IMO his best position would be playing just behind one, or two, strikers as a play maker. He has a goal touch as well as an eye for a pass.
