PaulSaint Posted 23 October, 2010 Posted 23 October, 2010 There's been plenty of football stories in the press this week, none more important than this: link Rooney, Cole, Terry, Andronikou, etc. hold your heads in shame!
Badger Posted 23 October, 2010 Posted 23 October, 2010 Very moving. The names you list are simply not worth mentioning compared to those who risked or sacrificed their lives in earlier generations (footballers of their day or otherwise).
Graffito Posted 23 October, 2010 Posted 23 October, 2010 Thanks for posting that up. I fear it would simply fall on deaf ears though with most top footballers these days. There is a Saints link to the article: "Captain Edward Bell, of Portsmouth and Southampton, won an MC for conspicuous gallantry".
Victor Posted 23 October, 2010 Posted 23 October, 2010 Walter Tull's story is an interesting one (there is a biography by Phil Vasili). Raised in a children's home he became one of the very first black professional footballers, was commissioned as an officer leading white troops into battle on the Western front and died at the Second battle of the Somme in 1918.
docker-p Posted 23 October, 2010 Posted 23 October, 2010 A very interesting read, thanks for posting the link.
Miltonaggro Posted 23 October, 2010 Posted 23 October, 2010 I think (and hope) that this long term recession will spell the end of these idiot 'superstars' - Holloway's outburst may have been funny but I know exactly where he is coming from. Most of them are so thick and out of touch that the amounts they are being paid are meaningless, chimpanzee monopoly!...
PaulSaint Posted 23 October, 2010 Author Posted 23 October, 2010 It's a scandal that an amputee returning from Afghanistan will probably see less compensation in a lifetime than that monkey Rooney earns in a fortnight?
Whitey Grandad Posted 23 October, 2010 Posted 23 October, 2010 Thanks for the link. It's a different world today, I'm afraid, but perhaps that's not such a bad thing. My grandad's brother was killed at Arras and I had an uncle who was wounded there. All the research that I've done just reinforces the respect and admiration that I have for each and every one of them.
rocknrollman no2 Posted 23 October, 2010 Posted 23 October, 2010 Reading that link certainly puts things into perspective. I have visited the old Somme battlefields and its a sad, humbling experience. Football today has gone totally mad.
paulwantsapint Posted 24 October, 2010 Posted 24 October, 2010 can capello please take his bunch of pr1cks on a training camp to camp bastion if he cant get them all in feel free to leave some if not all outside the gates to find out what constitutes real hero status
BadgerBadger Posted 24 October, 2010 Posted 24 October, 2010 There's alot of our society (far worse than most footballers) that could do with the 'reality check' of a visit to the front line or poverty stricken areas for them to understand the bigger picture and relevance of their situation in life.......sadly it'll never happen.
Miltonaggro Posted 25 October, 2010 Posted 25 October, 2010 I know that it's the perpetual cry of middle England, but boy could we do with the reintroduction of a form of national service right now. At the very least it would restore some national identity and perspective!...
PaulSaint Posted 8 November, 2010 Author Posted 8 November, 2010 This story was just featured on BBC1 (inside story). Big respect to Reading for going over there & laying wreaths for their ex-players!
richie Posted 9 November, 2010 Posted 9 November, 2010 Yeah saw that on BBC1 last night. Fair play to them from Reading. Moving stuff. Wearing my poppy with pride.
La BoIS Saint Posted 9 November, 2010 Posted 9 November, 2010 I assume that no one slagging off Rooney et al for the cash they are paid has a Sky Subscription? Or has paid for a ticket at Man U, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool etc? Or even at Saints? We are all feeding the madness.
Fan The Flames Posted 9 November, 2010 Posted 9 November, 2010 can capello please take his bunch of pr1cks on a training camp to camp bastion if he cant get them all in feel free to leave some if not all outside the gates to find out what constitutes real hero status The muppets wouldn't go, in South Africa when they moaned about being bored the Engaland management laid on a choice of events; a trip to Robin Island, a trip shopping or a pool competition. Some went shopping, most stayed for the pool and 1 went to Robin Island. The First World War was a tragedy where good men were sent to die, a tragedy we sadly havn't learnt from. Nevermind sending footballers to The Somme, all they do is try and entertain us and bring us some joy, every politician should go there are understand the gravity of their decisions. My thoughts are with every dead solider and their family. Footballers wages are rediculous and we as fans should do something about it but your anger should be directed at those in power that think war is the answer.
