The missus has been offered a job there, and as she earns a considerable amount more than me, I feel it is only prudent we go. However, I have heard some good and bad things about it, and was wondering if anyone had ever lived or spent considerable time over there. Any recommendations on areas to look etc would also be a help. Also, what kind of holiday etc do you generally get over there, working hours etc? I know holiday is usually substantially less over there.

Muchos gracias.

How long are you intending to stay in Miami?

Figure that out and then you wil have more of an idea about the rest of the things you need/want. This also makes a diffeence to the type of visa you require.

Personally, I wouldn't want to spend more than 18 months there, but obviously depends on work commitment.

For what it is worth I have visited Miami quite regularly in recent years. Once on hols, the rest on business trips.

It is a sprawling city with a large amount of Hispanics, so Spanish is spoken quite widely.

I have only stayed in Hotels ie around the airport, down by the Port/Marina area and along Miami Beach.

The weather is a bonus, although it can get v hot in the summer.

Plenty to do in the evening and its great to be outside enjoying the warm air late at night

Like DPS, I wouldn't want to live there for any length of time but for a short term experience, go for it!!

btw Miami Airport rates as one of the worst for me in relation to 'welcoming' Immigration and Customs staff

The only thing I know worth passing on is that you should aim to get a house in an area where people live year round. A lot of the rentals available will be in areas where the majority of the houses are holiday homes with few local amenities.

Tax regime is pretty good - there is no state income tax (although you still have to pay federal tax)

Vacation time can be low in comparison to the UK - sometimes as low as two weeks pa

Florida is a hire at will state - that means you can be fired immediately for any reason without notice - conversely you can just quit a job and walk out that day.

Make sure you get a good health plan as part of any job (health care is expensive). Watch out for the co-pay element - even if you have a health plan you will be expected to contribute towards the cost of treatment and the amounts vary dramatically between different plans.

Have fun

Miami's OK, but the "glitz and glamour" wear thin after a while. I was there for 3 years & that was enough. It's not a nice place to be unless you have money. Holiday isn't great, but I haven't lived in the US since 1997 so maybe things have changed.

Say goodbye to good beer. The craft brewing revolution in the US seems to have bypassed South Florida.

Weybridge is lovely I'll have you know. But yes, will be more lively.

I grew up in Weybridge/Hersham/Walton. Where in town do you live? (I think I remember you mentioning it once..Monument Road?)

Just off Monument Hill, road called Layton Court. Pretty close to the cricket ground. Shame it's not St Georges Hill though.

Ah yes it was you then! I went to middle school at the end of Monument Hill. Then to Heathside secondary off Brooklands Road. Spent many Friday nights in my youth milling around the cricket ground on Cinzano and White Lightning. :)

Last drove through the town in April. Not much has changed other than the pubs turning into poncy bars and clubs.

I meet a couple from Miami once, one of them was Cuban, they said half the population was Cuban.

Miami wouldn't be the first city I'd want to relocate to/visit in the USA. Although the weather should be nice, and the Carribean's not too far away, I'd quite like to visit Cuba, especially if I lived in USA.

visit the Biltmore hotel for sunday brunch. Fantastic. Apparently Al Capone rented the whole top floor to live in.

Some fantastic malls to shop and only an hour from the Florida keys. As for working there....not sure, it gets uncomfortable hot in the summer months
