richie Posted 15 October, 2010 Share Posted 15 October, 2010 On the whole they dont look to bad. Love sport but cant say I am getting worked up over it. Happy to watch it on tv. Only really interested in the athletics. No doubt we'll spend 6 months post games masturbating in the media about how we got some golds in rowing and sailing. At any other time no one gives a sh1t
Whitey Grandad Posted 15 October, 2010 Share Posted 15 October, 2010 The whole thing leaves me cold. We should have let the french lose £20billion over it.

You had your Olympics in 1946! Seriously though, I can't wait. Events like this NEVER happen in England/Britain and I for one can't wait. Excellent prices, shame I'll be in Greece getting married for the majority of it! Hopefully will be able to go to one or two events at least seeing as I live in Essex. Junction 9 Posted 15 October, 2010 Share Posted 15 October, 2010 Before my time! Just don't ask me to pay for any of it. We could do with that £20billion now. How does this £20 billion cost factor into the revenue generated by the tourism etc? Is it a fact the these Olympics will run at a loss to the country even when sold out? Even mine was an extrapolation and it all depends how you value the infrastructure projects. Beijing apparently made $16m profit on a specific spend of over $1.6bn. The total spend was over $40bn. http://www.econ.queensu.ca/working_papers/papers/qed_wp_1097.pdf http://www.chinasportsreview.com/2009/03/07/beijing-olympics-made-16-million-profit/

Quite agree with Whitey Grandad. the whole thing is a waste of money which could have been used to reduce the so-called 'black hole' instead of paying for all the free-loaders that appear out of the woodwork in the name of Olympic Committee members, plus their wives, kids, uncles and anybody else that can latch-on. I dread to think what the TV schedules will be like. Perhaps I'll emigrate, - to Tristan da Cunha, or Pitcairn Island. Don't think they have any TV
Eastcowzer Posted 17 October, 2010 Share Posted 17 October, 2010 Oh and by the way Thorpey We were still busy sorting out Hitlers mess in 1946. For your info' the games to which you refer were in fact held in 1948
hypochondriac Posted 17 October, 2010 Share Posted 17 October, 2010 Was speaking to a guy who runs a documentary company. Currently doing one on the olympics and has been since 2006. He is livid about it, 100 year old parts of history in london just done away with. Houses bought up by compulsory purchase orders and people given much worse alternatives. All this PR about an olympic park when 90 percent of it is buildings with tiny bits of green in between. The IOC only pay for the ceremony and the rest of us pay for everything else. The IOC are made up of a very small group of people who make massive profits on every olympics and they are ambassadors so they don't even pay tax. And all this for a 2 week sporting event! It was very enlightening.

According to the documentary maker, tourism actually falls during olympics. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/8343784.stm
