BadgerBadger Posted 13 October, 2010 Share Posted 13 October, 2010 I'm off to London on Fri/Sat with the wife, any recommendations for places to visit on the Fri, we've got a tour of the Houses of Parliament booked for Sat. We've done most of the big attractions before so I'm after something a little interesting/quirky. Any ideas? I like my history and old buildings. Chorlton Posted 13 October, 2010 Share Posted 13 October, 2010 Have a stroll down the Thames, get something to eeat at Borough Market, and then you are also near The Clink Prison (which would kill half an hour or so) & Vinopolis. Could also take a look at the Tower Bridge Workings & visit the gallery & views at the top.
sunrise Posted 13 October, 2010 Share Posted 13 October, 2010 the imperial war museum is really good and very interesting.
SuperMikey Posted 13 October, 2010 Share Posted 13 October, 2010 There's a new exhibition on at the Tate Modern I believe, worth checking out. Camden Market as well (if it's back up and running after the fire...)?
Whitey Grandad Posted 13 October, 2010 Share Posted 13 October, 2010 Any of the big museums, Science, Natural History, Victoria and Albert are all close together in South Ken. Tower of London? The London Museum? You may find someone that does guided walking tours.

Don't forget to pop into the Market Porter for one of a dozen real ales. Yum.
dune Posted 13 October, 2010 Share Posted 13 October, 2010 If you're into antiques try Camden Passage. I found the shops to be expensive, but the stallholders were more realistic. Stalls only Weds/Sat. http://www.camdenpassageislington.co.uk/New%20Folder/home.htm

rocknrollman no2 Posted 13 October, 2010 Share Posted 13 October, 2010 When my son was a lot younger,he wrote a letter to our local MP Alan Whitehead, saying he was against hunting and seeing the bill was up for debate, would he vote against it? Mr Whitehead not only voted against it,he also invited us to go up to the House of Parliment to show us around. What a great day that was.We were taken to all the parts the public are not allowed to go.For instance, theres a church below where Haig was married and right in the middle of the Parliment building is the original 12th century hall, where it all began. We had tea within earshot of a lot of famous MPs and we went to Prime ministers question time. So if you want a cheap day out, write to your MP! Also try one of those purple tourist tour buses.Thet are a tad pricey, but well worth it as they take you to all the interesting places in London. ST Randy Posted 13 October, 2010 Share Posted 13 October, 2010 Speakers Corner on sundays (Hyde Park opposite Marble Arch) is great for a laugh. Some of the speakers there would do well on the Saints Web!! Great Chinese food (tasty and cheap) in Soho near Leicester Square.
BadgerBadger Posted 13 October, 2010 Author Share Posted 13 October, 2010 http://golondon.about.com/u/ua/thingstodoinlondon/london-hidden-gems.htm The Old Operating Theatre looks well worth a visit especially as it's in the locale of Borough Market. Think I'll give the Fan Museum a miss though

Cheers y'all!! Two birds with one stone here badger..... Half way up Borough high street is a pub called "The George" It is the oldest pub with a balcony in the country, full of soapy water.... sorry i mean Real ales and a regular for many Saints fans when we are playing in London. Someone also suggested the vinopolois, which is also a good shout and right on Borough market.

Hamilton Saint Posted 14 October, 2010 Share Posted 14 October, 2010 Have you done the War Cabinet Rooms / Churchill Museum in Whitehall? The Monument? EMI Studios / Abbey Road?
Chorlton Posted 14 October, 2010 Share Posted 14 October, 2010 Cabinet War Rooms are well worth a visit. I must go back as they have opened new sections I believe. Also, not sure if you are travelling up from this area, but worth getting one of the two for one brochures for various London sites (including War Room, Eye, river cruise amongst others) from one of the mainline stations here. And as others have said, the Imperial War Museum is a must, but you won't get time to see much else if you do it justice!
Draino76 Posted 14 October, 2010 Share Posted 14 October, 2010 Interesting and quirky? If you like curry you should take a wander down Brick Lane in the East End. There's lots of galleries and exhibitions in the area; my particular favourite is a gallerry with every picture made from burnt toast. Walk further east to Whitechapel and see the Blind Beggar pub; the Krays hangout. There are several Jack the ripper tours on Saturdays, and I think there is a museum about the elephant man somewhere. Saint-scooby Posted 14 October, 2010 Share Posted 14 October, 2010 A few years ago, I took my twins up for a day out, jumped on an open top tour bus, not sure on the price now but its a great way of seeing little known places, very interesting guides on most of them. mdearlove Posted 14 October, 2010 Share Posted 14 October, 2010 A friend of mine from the US always does an evening/night walking tour. He reckons the Jack the Ripper tour is excellent. Borough Market is a must - but beware its incredibly busy at lunchtime on Friday as a lot of office workers head there for lunch.

LOL - had a mate who put £5 in the pot thinking that they would be satisfied with that and go away and leave him in peace. Didn't quite work out that way! Junction 9 Posted 14 October, 2010 Share Posted 14 October, 2010 It might not be everyone's cup of tea but I think the open top bus tours are really good in London. It's pot luck which guide you get on the bus, but a good one comes out with all sorts of intersting gems. You can also hop on and off whenever you like all day so it doubles up as a travel ticket. Bit cold now but do it anyway.

dubai_phil Posted 14 October, 2010 Share Posted 14 October, 2010 For a good fun cheap evening of entertainment, check out The Comdey Club. Main base is in Leicester Square but the same Comedians perform at 2 or 3 venues per night. I went to the one in Ealing at the old Studios and it was about 6 quid to get in and normal Pub prices. Ususally 3 Comedians and at least one always hits the spot. Just don't sit in the front row - get their early if you can

Borough Market is a must - but beware its incredibly busy at lunchtime on Friday as a lot of office workers head there for lunch. It is v good, ends outside the seven sisters, where some of the victims and perhaps the ripper drank, right near Brick Lane wheer you can nget a decent curry. i'd recomend a taxi home though as it's qute a 'dodgy' area after dark. also recomend the 'real east end walk'. hamster Posted 18 October, 2010 Share Posted 18 October, 2010 next time if you book far enough in advance i would thoroughly recomend the 'ceremony of the keys' at the tower. dark, gloomy and realistic, actually, it is real and if you have kids in tow they tend to stand very still and be very quiet during the whole thing. http://www.hrp.org.uk/toweroflondon/whatson/ceremonyofthekeys.aspx
