Legod Third Coming Posted 12 October, 2010 Posted 12 October, 2010 Can someone please explain how NC can "get him signed up" or "make him renew" his contract? Do you mean the old horse's head-in-the-bed trick? Otherwise its completely up to Lallana to sign or not sign. Cortese's choice is whether to offer him a contact or not, and on what terms. Free market. Gone in january when we can get some dosh for him. You don't need to be an Italian to offer someone a deal they cannot turn down... but it helps!
landford.saint Posted 12 October, 2010 Posted 12 October, 2010 Isn't Cortese Swiss/Italian... If so it will be a cuckoo clock in his bed.

There's absolutely no need for us to sell him in January, it would be lunacy.
gazd83 Posted 12 October, 2010 Posted 12 October, 2010 He is 100% Everton. As much as he loves the club, I think he would be very tempted if a decent offer comes along. He had made his mind up about joining Fulham a couple of seasons back but it all changed and he obviously stayed. On the other hand when I spoke to him during the 'limbo' period without owners etc, he did say he would ony leave if a new buyer didn't come along.
Saint Fan CaM Posted 12 October, 2010 Posted 12 October, 2010 I would hope that we are able to secure a new contract for the lad - he really is the best players we have now and a catalyst for the nPC. It is a little concerning that there has been no news yet which perhaps suggests a waiting game is being played by Adam. If we don't go up I would fully expect him to leave.
OldNick Posted 12 October, 2010 Posted 12 October, 2010 AL is good footballer and is important to our team, but he is not of PL quality, his lack of pace for one thing is a major drawback. If he leaves then so be it, i only hope the club can get a decent fee to replace him.I watched Swndon v Bristol Rovers last night and Rovers had a tricky player in Al's mould I think his name was Hoskins.

I disagree, I don't think it is coincedence that our new found form has been since his return. Of course if he does leave, there is not a lot we can do about it, but he is better than "A good footballer". He will play for England and he will play in the Premiership and out of our entire squad, he is probably the only one that could make that step now.
SFC Forever Posted 12 October, 2010 Posted 12 October, 2010 I have said before but if Adam stays I believe he can end up as the latest Saints legend. Our team changed from the first minute he entered the fray this season.

You're definitely underestimating AL in my opinion. Just a good footballer? He's more than that, the boy is class. His feet (both of them) are so quick and his close control is exceptional, oh and he scores regularly too. He'd walk into any NPC side, and wouldn't be far off one or two Prem sides.

I agree with this. I think the task for Old Nick is to find someone who is better in the top 2 divisions at what he does not called Robert Koren.
redkeith Posted 12 October, 2010 Posted 12 October, 2010 His lack of strength and pace is probably what is keeping out of the PL at the moment, as it doesn't fit in with the English box to box plan as perdonified by Gerrard, Lampard, Huddlestone etc. A lot of posters commented on the world cup thread, that Xavi and Inesta would not have broken through in the PL as they are too small. AL is like Inesta's younger brother. Hope he can be persuaded to stay, bit if not. I hope he heads to Spain, where his talents would be more appreciated.

Sadly i had similar replies to my assessment of Drew. AL is a very good footballer but I have yet to see how he could be a PL player on his speed of foot alone. Adam Johnston is a similar type of player, but to me he has a bit more about him. I long to see Al prove me wrong, but IMO he is at his standard at present. He will be one of the best players in our league though. I hope he can get a bit more power in his shooting, last season it was poor. I have only seen AL play in his brief appearances against Yeovil and Bournemouth. Each time he came on and linked well with RL.
SuperMikey Posted 12 October, 2010 Posted 12 October, 2010 Those people (or person) saying that AL is 100% Everton - I thought he was a boyhood Saints fan? Wouldn't surprise me if he was an Everton fan though, what with being from the South coast...

Somehow (and I don't know how because I couldn't do it) footballers can play for anyone. Tbh if it was me and it was a choice between a very, very mediocre Premiership club and two promotions and an England call-up, I know where my future would lie...

Couldn't agree more. Said when he started he reminds me of a young Gerrard but with more skill. Doesn't have power in his shot but frankly doesn't need it as his placement, movement and timing are all exceptional. Defenders can't live with him in this league, or the next. Premiership class? Probably in time.
Mowgli Posted 12 October, 2010 Posted 12 October, 2010 Hope he stays but not too worried if we lose him to a DECENT premiership club (i.e not Stoke or Spurs). It could be good for him. But we could be there in 3 years ourselves so any move would be totally about money. We want people who are proud to wear the shirt and recognise the clubs true potential. I think Lallana fits in to this mould. If I'm wrong, then I would not be too upset to see him go.

lethallee Posted 12 October, 2010 Posted 12 October, 2010 In my opinion he will be here until end of season and beyond if we get promoted this season. If we don't then expect him to go to PL team - he is PL class
derry Posted 12 October, 2010 Posted 12 October, 2010 Is it Weston saint who's a close family friend of his. Or is that Surmans family? Friendly with David Lallana and Steve Surman.
Topcat Posted 12 October, 2010 Posted 12 October, 2010 The question is why no new contract deal was done last season? Or in the summer? Was one offered?
hughieslastminutegoal Posted 12 October, 2010 Posted 12 October, 2010 I'm fairly confident (based on nothing but my own suspicions) that Lallana will not only want what's best for himself, but also for Southampton FC. I get the impression that he loves it here. Growing up at a club and turning yourself into a first team regular must feel special so I'm sure he holds the club close to his heart. So I believe he'll sign a contract, even if it means him leaving at the end of this season. Not as special as getting an even fatter signing on fee. Players who don't make the most of the earning opportunities that come their way risk missing out on future security because (as Lalana knows only too well) an injury is always just around the corner. A bird in the hand...
Mowgli Posted 12 October, 2010 Posted 12 October, 2010 A champions league club not decent enough for him then? Not that one...
MarkSFC Posted 12 October, 2010 Posted 12 October, 2010 Last summer Pardew said that staying here would give Lallana (and others) the chance to put "titles and trophies" on his cv not just a few noughts on his bank account. He stayed and won a trophy. If he'd gone to Spurs say last summer almost certainly he would have spent sone of the season out on loan somewhere and maybe similar to Surman get a move. However, I think he's alot better than Surman. Assuming we go up this year he is likely to stay and I would think that one season in the Championship would be fair to both sides. After that if we don't go up immediately I wouldn't blame him for moving to the Prem. At that point he will be 23/24 which will be a good age to start out in the top division. He would also be " a winner" and that will count for a lot. In essence I think his move up the leagues and any move away will be determined by and mirror our success over the next few years.

Think of it this way. Liverpool spent just under 2 million on a player that was in and out of a league 1 team last year. Lallana was scoring 20 goals and a pivitol role in a team in the same division. AL is more than good enough to play in a lower half PL right now, and a top half PL team in the future if he continues improving the way he has done. IMO of course
Wade Garrett Posted 12 October, 2010 Posted 12 October, 2010 Just pay him what he wants and build the side around him. Proviso that he could leave if we don't get promoted would be more than fair.

IMO of course How often has Jonjo Shevely actually played in the Liverpool first team though? (answer one sub apperance during extra time in the carling cup against Northampton) I imagine Adam would rather play first team football for saints than warming someones bench in the PL (although you never know) at this stage of his carrer. I think Adams a great player, but we really don't have a lot of evidence that he is good enough to play as a regular first teamer in the PL do we? How many times has he played against PL oppostion in the last couple of years two or three?

If Liverpool, a top 6 side (despite their form right now) think signing a player who was nowhere near as productive last season as AL then im pretty sure a team like Wigan or Wolves etc could sign Adam and comfortably expect him to be a regular starter and performer now. The lad is quality. Seems to have a good attitude and seems to relish having the responsibility of making this team tick.

Everyone will be linked with him. But with our supposed financial muscle, we should be able to wait for the biggest offer.
Smirking_Saint Posted 13 October, 2010 Posted 13 October, 2010 The question is why no new contract deal was done last season? Or in the summer? Was one offered? No doubt you have a conspiracy theory in the offing ?? AL from a personal perspective would be mad to sign a contract in January without knowing where we are going to be next year, there is no way he will stay or probably be persuaded to stay if we are still in the third tier, if i had offers from the PL then i wouldn't. The NPC is however different, especially if we look as though we could have a decent crack at it. Equally i believe that NC won't cash in, we (i think still) are minted, we don't need the cash and so what would the point be ? Some players are irreplaceable, AL (at this level) is irreplaceable and so i think he will also wait until seasons end and try to persuade him again once promoted, i would be very surprised if contract talks have not already been approached. All in all i reckon this one will rumble on until somewhere near the end of this season or start of next.
Nexstar Posted 13 October, 2010 Posted 13 October, 2010 Cortese would probably say like £5m + or forget it. From the sale of the likes of Bale our youth talent will be worth far superior to £3m in 2-3 years time
doddisalegend Posted 13 October, 2010 Posted 13 October, 2010 To be fair, in the past months, apparently Chelsea were going to bid £8m for him, Spurs are going to buy him, as are Wolves. Exactly no point worrying about it until something concrete comes up, how many rumours in the papers about players we are supposedly going to sign actually come true anyway?
Appy Posted 13 October, 2010 Posted 13 October, 2010 Sign him up ASAP, he is the best player in the league, we need him.
Saint Fan CaM Posted 13 October, 2010 Posted 13 October, 2010 I would hope that we hold out for more than £3m TBH. We must be able to stay firm on something like £5m - he has to be worth that much to the club given what happens when he's not playing.
OldNick Posted 14 October, 2010 Posted 14 October, 2010 I do not agree with your opinion.............about AL not being prem standard. He is in another league to Drew Surman without doubt so I think that makes him premier league............... that's fine, football is all about opinions. AL has a quick brain and feet, not legs though.I believe that in the PL you need all three. He is playing against L1 footballers and so looks better than he would be against CCC or PL players. I want him to be the best as that means we as a club enjoy his skills but hopefully a good selling on fee (Bournemouth have a 25% sell on clause) The best youngster who I have seen at the club in quite a few years we have sold has become a top player and that is Bale. The first time i saw him play, I went away from the ground very upbeat about him.Watching him play now and you can see he will make it to one of the very top teams, and like Giggs its sad he is Welsh not English
The Kraken Posted 14 October, 2010 Posted 14 October, 2010 I would hope that we hold out for more than £3m TBH. We must be able to stay firm on something like £5m - he has to be worth that much to the club given what happens when he's not playing. It doesn't make any sense for us to sell in January. None whatsoever. And especially not for £3m. Jonjo Shelvy has already been discussed, he went for £2m. And you only have to look at the like of Daniel Sturridge, who let his contract expire at Man City to go to Chelsea. His fee at tribunal was set at a total of £6.5m (£3.5m up front, £0.5m on 10, 20 30, 40 games, £1m on 1st England cap), so the tribunals these days are setting realistic figures for players. Everton will potentially have to shell out £1.5M to Leeds for Luke Garbutt, who had barely played for their reserves let alone their first team. And Leeds took £5M from Chelsea in an out of court settlement for those luminaries Tom Taiwo and Michael Woods. If we sold him in January it would have to be for much more than we'd get at tribunal in the summer. If he has another high scoring season I can see his tribunal figure being at least £5m in the summer, so we'd have to be looking at a transfer fee of £7m or £8m to make it worth our while.
