Spudders Posted 10 October, 2010 Share Posted 10 October, 2010 What do you collect or have you collected in the past? Usually collections tend to be a bit embarrassing/nerdy, but hopefully some of you will be brave and ‘fess up! When I was a very young kid I collected coins, stamps and Panini football stickers. Also collected match boxes (amazing how many different ones there were!) plus I tried to start collecting fag packets, but my mum told me off for picking them up, so that idea didn't last long! Early teens I collected beer mats (which was odd as it was before I was old enough to get in pubs and was mainly based on the fact that I got passed a massive collection from my older cousin). Also collected coca-cola stuff (had loads of bottles and cans from all over the world). I think from my mid-teens onwards, having collections seemed very un-cool, so haven’t collected anything in years. However saying that, when I was about 16 I was into a rock band and I accumulated a massive collection of their t-shirts which I had forgotten about until recently. I didn’t intentionally collect them, but just bought loads of them. Looked on eBay recently after re-discovering them and the ones from 20 years ago are selling for big bucks now to collectors as 'vintage' shirts, so by accident I have ended up with a collection of these t-shirts which I’m now thinking of selling on for the cash. These days I am into my trainers and although I wouldn’t say I collected them, it’s hard to deny that they are not a collection when I have so many pairs of them. So, what have you/do you collect? bridge too far Posted 10 October, 2010 Share Posted 10 October, 2010 Theatre programmes - I just can't bring myself to throw them away. Nothing else (except for husbands but then I don't keep them but, rather, discard them when they've reached their sell-by dates )
Marsdinho Posted 10 October, 2010 Share Posted 10 October, 2010 (edited) Ive still got all of my old Star Wars figures from when I was a kid. At the time, I wasnt collecting them as such, just wanted them all so I could play with them. Now they are stored away somewhere under the stairs, I guess you could call it a collection (although it hasnt been added to since the late 80's !!!) Nowadays, I collect atlases, the older the better, have about 40'ish I guess. One day, I hope to get my hands on something like this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SUPERB-HOMANN-ATLAS-COMPENDARIUS-52-COL-MAPS-1752-/170336848193?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item27a8de0941 NB: If anyone has any old atlases for sale (pre 1920's) please PM me. Arizona Posted 10 October, 2010 Share Posted 10 October, 2010 I sort of collect Scalextric F1 cars. Yes, everyone have a good laugh about that. Never drive them at the mo because my flat is way to small to have a track, but one day I will. I've also saved the tickets from every Saints game I've ever been to. My ticket from the JPT game seems to have gone walkies, but I'm sure I've still got it somewhere. Definitely haven't thrown that one out.

Hamilton Saint Posted 10 October, 2010 Share Posted 10 October, 2010 1) tickets for concerts I've been to (going back to the early 70s) 2) vinyl LPs - I have about 900 (started in 1969) 3) CDs - I have about 700 4) DVDs 5) hardcover books My wife hates me collecting things. If she had her way, she would throw all of it away. Wouldn't even try selling them, or giving them away to interested people. No, just toss the lot into a bin (well, several bins!). The Star Wars figures mught still be worth something. I've got a selection of early microprocessor integrated circuits from the early seventies. I haven't collected them, I used them professionally at the time and I just haven't thrown them away. Now I see that there are people who collect them and the whole lot are probably worth a few thousand dollars. The dilemma is, do I sell them now or wait another 10 years or so? Sheaf Saint Posted 10 October, 2010 Share Posted 10 October, 2010 oh crikey I forgot about them, I've got boxes of them back at my parents home from my ravings days! So my original post was a bit wrong when I said I didn't collect anything in my late teens! I haven't got my collection of flyers any more, they got chucked out years ago. But, although I never consciously decided to collect rave tapes, I did accumualte quite a few and still have a box full in the attic. The oldest one I have is a 3rd/4th/5th generation copy of Sasha and Laurent Garnier from the Eclipse club in Coventry from early 1991. Terrible sound quality and it just goes silent during the bass solo bits, but it still gives me goosebumps when I put it on for a little nostalgia. Colinjb Posted 10 October, 2010 Share Posted 10 October, 2010 I collect two things. Football Shirts and F1 Car Models. I have a cabinet full of the F1 cars and a few that have spilt over from it. As for the football shirts I have over 80 now.
Colinjb Posted 10 October, 2010 Share Posted 10 October, 2010 I sort of collect Scalextric F1 cars. Always been impressed by the quality of them but never quite got into them because I didn't see the point without a track.
Essruu Posted 10 October, 2010 Share Posted 10 October, 2010 I once collected my belly button fluff in a glass over a period of a few months. It's surprising how quickly it builds up. I got bored and chucked it all away before I had chance to stuff anything with it though.

This sounds like a great thing to collect. I might start looking into it myself. If it's not too much of a personal question, how much do you think you've spent on your atlases and where do you get them from?
Guest Dark Sotonic Mills Posted 10 October, 2010 Share Posted 10 October, 2010 Back around the FA Cup winning days, when I went to every match, home and away, I used to collect a scarf from every away match and pin it on my bedroom wall. I have no idea where any of them are now, however.

If it's not too much of a personal question, how much do you think you've spent on your atlases and where do you get them from? Ive generally got them from car boot's and 2nd hand shops, there was a 2nd hand book shop just off soton high street a few years ago that used to have quite a few. I pay anything from about 50p to £20 / £30. Funnily enough, my prized atlas, which was printed in 1899, cost 50p from Bursledon car boot !!! Its worth considerably more !!
