Not thrilled with having to 4-5-1 for a home match, even if we do have some talented attacking midfielders in Lallana, Guly, Puncheon, Oxo and Chaplow. Has that Vassell chap found a club yet? Maybe, even if he thinks League 1 is below him, he might do a stint to get some fitness before the January window opens?

Matthew Le God Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 Gordon Simpson ignores completely that against Bournemouth, Saints ended the game with Guly upfront with Chaplow behind him.
the saint in winchester Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 We have options with our existing squad for one of the AMs to play just behind Lambert (Lallana and Guly come to mind). I'd also he happy to get a good striker in on loan anyway, with the cloud over Barnard and Connolly more out than in.
RedArmy Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 If he finds his form it's not a huge problem, if he plays like he has all season we're in for a long game.
Saint_clark Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 Lallana, Guly, Puncheon and Chaplow can all do a job just behind Lambert IMO. If not, give Doble a shot. If he's good enough as an option off the bench he should be good enough to start.
Evil Monkey Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 Lallana, Guly, Puncheon and Chaplow can all do a job just behind Lambert IMO. If not, give Doble a shot. If he's good enough as an option off the bench he should be good enough to start. Will be away with Wales, no?
Matthew Le God Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 If not, give Doble a shot. If he's good enough as an option off the bench he should be good enough to start. He is with the Welsh squad preparing for a Euro 2012 qualifier.
70's Mike Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 Playing with one striker at home, against a team who will park the bus is, imo, not a bad thing. We need to pull them out and hit them on the break, we struggle if the opposition does nothing. Lallana roaming free is a good option
Saint_clark Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 Will be away with Wales, no? He is with the Welsh squad preparing for a Euro 2012 qualifier. F*ck, of all the times to be called up 4-5-1 with Hoskins on the bench then i'd imagine.
SNOWY Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 Barnard can play with a light cast/strapping surely?
Viking Warrior Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 Typical Echo Crap barnard having emergency surgery more a case of having his lacerations sutured. Still no mention of the other guys involved though. I love the unbiased reporting of the echo
Matthew Le God Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 F*ck, of all the times to be called up 4-5-1 with Hoskins on the bench then i'd imagine. Schneiderlin is also away with the French under 21 team. I think it will be 4411 With Lallana, Puncheon, Guly/Chamberlain as the wide players and the player behind Lambert, with Hammond and Chaplow in central midfield.

toofarnorth Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 Time for another Butterfield hat-trick? Good shout but we are equally short on right backs. I'd use this as an opportunity to get some extra width. Put in Dickson down the left and lallana can play just behind rickie.
The Kraken Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 Lallana properly up top with Lambert would be my choice, with Holmes or Dickson coming in at LM.

If he's good enough as an option off the bench he should be good enough to start. I was thinking about Doble. Good enough to get called up for the full Welsh squad and I was suprised at how good he has been on FIFA11. No idea how good he is on that Manager game though which is the be all and end all of knowing if a player is ready or not Being away on international duty this weekend however stuffs it all up. lol
Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 6 October, 2010 Author Posted 6 October, 2010 But what happens if Rickie gets a knock, early on? Threadbare ain't the word and Guly probably wouldn't be ideal as the main striker for the bulk of a game.
ssaints Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 Gordon Simpson ignores completely that against Bournemouth, Saints ended the game with Guly upfront with Chaplow behind him. and i thought Guly had a few nice touches would like to have seen him come on for Lambert and given Bernard some decent service.
Graffito Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 Lallana behind Lambert. He finished there for the final 20 minutes of the final game last season against Southend, looked good and scored.
Saints foreva Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 I wouldn't mind the midfield and strike force looking like this on Saturday: --- Hammond - Chaplow --- Puncheon - Lallana - Dickson ---------- Lambert
MarkSFC Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 On a one off basis Im not too bothered. I expect Lallana will be given a free role in a 4-4-1-1 type of system with Punch (or holmes) up the left and Chamberlain up the right. Everyone else as started v Bournemouth. Guly for me showed he could play the target man role at least on an ad-hoc basis for 20-30 mins of a game on Saturday. Although it didnt come off he had one moment where he chased his own flick on which very few strkers do or can. And his touch looks better than Rickies. I do hope that Barnard is available but wouldnt be worried even if hes not. It do hope to see a loanee striker though soon!!
sfc6mufc3 Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 A bit worrying to say the least, and just as we are getting into a mini run. Is this the next obstacle in our quest for promotion???????

Window Cleaner Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 A bit worrying to say the least, and just as we are getting into a mini run. Is this the next obstacle in our quest for promotion??????? but we having options, just got to be courageous enough to try them. Guly playing off Lambert (I suppose cos there's no-one else) with Lallana and Punch either side of him will be very revealing, then Lambert and Barnard can tough it out for the other striker's spot when they're both available again.
ChrisPY Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 -------------Lambert-------------- Lallana--------Guly-------Puncheon --------Chaplow--Hammond-------- Harding-Seabourne-Fonte-Butterfield --------------Davis---------------- Subs Bart Dickson Jaidi Chamberlain Holmes Gobern (is he still injured?) Garrod
Lighthouse Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 Guly would seem like a fairly obvious replacement, in behind Lambert. Lallana could do the job too, as could Puncheon in an emergency.
Chez Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 I thought Guly looked like a fish out of water up front. Lallana is thebetter option but it will mean two new players (from the Bompey win) in the midfield. I've problem with Dickson coming in, slightly more concerned about Guly or Chaplow (who looked liked he needs a few weeks to find his feet) starting in the middle if I'm honest. Schneiderlin was back to his best on Saturday, and games are won and lost there. As for Lambert, if I recall correctly Goodison (who was outstanding) had him in his pocket at SMS last season and because of that it was very tough breaking them down. Expect more of the same unless we can sneak an early lead.
Professor Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 Barnard can play with a light cast/strapping surely? But can he play with a ball and chain on his ankle? And would Adkins want to play him?

Still no mention of the other guys involved though. I love the unbiased reporting of the echo I agree Why doesn't the Echo mention that Tranmere will be without their main centre half on Sat. - Ian Goodison. (6' plus Jamican c/b - 3 times player of the season) http://www.thefa.com/TheFA/Disciplinary/SuspensionLists

(6' plus Jamican c/b - 3 times player of the season) http://www.thefa.com/TheFA/Disciplinary/SuspensionLists Also amazing to note that 3 or 4 players have already got to 5 cards for the season in 12 or 13 matches, bet most of them are defensive or central midfielders, it's a place where you can't hide and shirk away from tough tackles even if you know you'll probably get a yellow for them.
MarkSFC Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 Schneiderlin is away with France. Chaplow then!!
benjii Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 How's about: Punch----Hammond----Guly----Lallana --------------Oxo-------------------- ------------Lambert---------------- Allows the pace of Oxo to be used directly against their CBs and doesn't require shifting Lallana or Puncheon around. Whilst I've no doubt Lallana could play in the hole effectively I wouldn't want to swap positions around any more than necessary. From the little I've seen of Guly, I think he is physical enough to play in CM with Hammond. If MS was around I'd play Guly in the hole as a swap for Barnard and leave everything else unchanged. We could do that, with Chaplow coming in for MS if his fitness is ok. I'm surprised at people saying Chaplow could play in the hole though. He's not that sort of player at all IMO.

Pardew used this formation to beat Huddersfield 5-0...There ain't much if any difference between 4-3-3 and 4-5-1 these days.
Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 6 October, 2010 Author Posted 6 October, 2010 Guly would seem like a fairly obvious replacement, in behind Lambert. Lallana could do the job too, as could Puncheon in an emergency. True; I believe that's where he played for Cesena. As long as he's not played as a central striker, it could be the answer. Still think we need another out and out striker with Connolly always picking up niggling injuries and Barnard potentially unavailable for a bit.

trousers Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 How many players does a lower league club need to lose due to international duty to effect a cancellation? I thought it was 2 but obviously not.
Matthew Le God Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 How many players does a lower league club need to lose due to international duty to effect a cancellation? I thought it was 2 but obviously not. It is three. But only if the club request it, it doesn't happen automatically. Nor is it a "cancellation", it is postponed.
trousers Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 It is three. But only if the club request it, it doesn't happen automatically. Nor is it a "cancellation", it is postponed. Shame Pulis didn't qualify for selection by the Faroe Islands then...or perhaps he did... but didn't quite make the squad? Re: cancellation vs postponement... Fair cop.....I know what i meant but have 10 points all the same for a good spot... ;-)
scotty Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 Barnard can play with a light cast/strapping surely? +1, "rock-hard Barnard" wont let that little scratch stop him playing.
RedWillie Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 +1, "rock-hard Barnard" wont let that little scratch stop him playing. I think you'll find it is more than a scratch... a whole lot more. You don't have surgery or get sutured for a scratch. If he's been rebailed perhaps the old bill still couldn't interview him due to his injury.?
scotty Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 I think you'll find it is more than a scratch... a whole lot more. You don't have surgery or get sutured for a scratch. Wouldnt expect to see him in the tranmere game at least.
david in sweden Posted 7 October, 2010 Posted 7 October, 2010 I was thinking about Doble. Good enough to get called up for the full Welsh squad and I was suprised at how good he has been on FIFA11. No idea how good he is on that Manager game though which is the be all and end all of knowing if a player is ready or not Sounds great... if you couple his name up with players like Gareth Bale, but "qualifying for Wales " means only having a Welsh grandmother ..and you're in ! For many decades the Welsh (and N.Irish teams) included one or two world class players ..and the rest were from L2 and local league sides to make up the numbers. I really hope that Doble has a good career but young stars often develop when playing with good players in a top side, not coming in and suddenly becoming the teams " Saviour " ...single-handed. IMHO , he's at least a season away from becoming a regular ..even in our L1 side.
georgeweahscousin Posted 7 October, 2010 Posted 7 October, 2010 ADkins just refused to rule Barnard out for Saturday.
