Doctoroncall Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 It's the owners that are rich not the club, I cannot see the Liebherr family dipping into the money bag like Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nayan or Roman Abramovich though which is fine by me.
holepuncture Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 thats a good sign, im sure they would have done a few background checks before putting us fifth. I would like Cortese to run the club, and the Liebherr family step in only for infrastructural investment. Splash the broadcasting royalties on wages, and let the Liebherrs invest in property, in our new stadium, the saints village, train station.... perfect!
MarkSFC Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 I hadn't really thought about it since the sad passing of Markus but if it's "the Leibheir Family" who own us now, we are even more wealthy than before!! Of course wealthy in regard to the owners rather than profit making ability of the club but that how they want to measure it!! I'm intrigued "holepuncture" what's this Saints village you have un mind?!! I also agree with them spending the vast majority of their money on infrastructure projects. Those will be their legacy.
JRM Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 Likewise Man City aren't worth 20 billion, just the owner. He may spend lots on them, but it's mere pocket money. He can make 3 billion from oil price rises, so a few hundred million on a football club really is just a hobby. Pretty sad state of affairs but true. Whereas many of us can't afford to attend matches. Man City really is an interesting case, when you have an owner who has such obscene wealth, and throws it around on players transfer fees and wages, it is quite clear that the "buisness" will operate at a loss supported by artificial investment from the owner. On that basis, what difference does it make if the club make operating losses of £10M or £20m? Revenue from ticket sales would make such a small difference to the overall picture if would not take much for Sheikh Mansoor to offer affordable tickets in certain parts of the ground allowing the club to stay in touch with the traditional fanbase. Not sure what they are like this season, but I went to Man City v Fulham in April 2008 and it was £19 in the lower tier, cheaper than saints at the time (although that was for a bottom category game)

Well, if we were to stay at St.Marys, then I feel the purchase of the gas works and all the old factories would be a good investment. Strip it all down and build the saints village. Supporters are currently all over the city buying food, drinks, and consuming activities at a cost. We should do our best to provide our own service and enhance our commercial activity, not just sticking some barriers on our car park! the middle tier at the Emirates is simply stunning. a whole highstreet of bars and restuarants all themed to provide an alternative to whats outside the ground, there was a weatherspoons style, walkabout sports style, llyods style diner and so on. This to me is the benchmark of what we can achieve with Saints. The potential for capital investment is decent in my opinion, I reckon the Liebherrs might go for a bit of that, rather than Yaya Toure on £1m a month wages!

No way he is good enough for the prem, not in a million years.
iansums Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 Where is Eddie Mitchell on the list? Perhaps Ossie will know.
ribbo Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 http://www.footballtransfertavern.com/2010/10/premiership/newcastle-lining-up-ben-arfa-replacement?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+TransferTavern+%28The+Transfer+Tavern+Home+Page%29 Anyone see that on the same list? No way he is good enough for the prem, not in a million years. His name is Papa Waigo N’Diaye, a 26-year old Senegalese national who participated in the 2008 African Cup of Nations, with the ability play to both on the wing and up front. Southampton fans may be vaguely familiar with the name, since his efforts helped them through the 2010 Johnstone’s Paint Trophy. yeah, I "vaguely" remember him
Jez Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 Is Papa Waigo N’Diaye on the rich list or something? Is that why we are suddenly talking about him?
Andyb1 Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 Is Papa Waigo N’Diaye on the rich list or something? Is that why we are suddenly talking about him? I haven't paid my £5 so can't start threads.. I noticed it whilst looking at the Southampton page on 442 after looking at the rich list, Shoot me..
holepuncture Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 5. The Liebherr Family £3bn Southampton Ages various By the time of his tragic death in August, Markus Liebherr (pictured) had developed a real love of League One club Southampton – and, not uncoincidentally, endeared himself to Saints fans. The German-born, Swiss-based industrialist agreed a deal to buy Southampton in July 2009 within two hours of arriving at the St Mary's ground. No terms were disclosed but Southampton came out of administration and Liebherr claimed the deal was "ein Schnappchen" – a bargain. Liebherr initially inherited a fifth of his family’s industrial fortune when his father died in 1993, but he gave his shares back and developed his own business, Mali International. The whole Liebherr fortune is reckoned to be worth £3 billion. His family have pledged to continue his good work for the Saints, whose sights are set no lower than promotion to the Championship this season.

Secret Site Agent Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 I hadn't really thought about it since the sad passing of Markus but if it's "the Leibheir Family". Slight misnomer here, Mark. When they refer to the Liebherr Family, they mean Marcus's family (and the Mali Group) not the larger Liebherr empire.
Made in Southampton Posted 6 October, 2010 Posted 6 October, 2010 Where are Portsmouth on the list?........ Oh.

I like your ideas...there seems to be some interest council ways of improving the area along the river so who knows. It would be good to have a really good venue right on the doorstep of the stadium - although not sure what the police would think - and a proper "sports bar" is seriouslt lacking in this city! Havent been to the Emirates yet so thanks for the info. wasnt aware of that sounds great!
