Reserving Sun Loungers

I had an incident whilst on holiday with a German over a sun lounger. Having poddled down to the beach at 12 one day I found that every sun bed had a towel on it with about 25% in use. I was not impressed to say the least so the next day after breakfast went down and me and the missus found two beds right next to the sea front and removed the towels and sat in the sun reading. About an hour later a German arrived at the next sunloungers and out of the corner of my eye detected he wasn't happy (so assumed he was friends with those who's towels we'd removed). Sure enough 5 minutes later I was rudely interupted with a "Ziss is my bed". After words in which I pointed out that you wouldn't reserve a seat in a restaurant and said a few more things (I know I shouldn't have mentioned the war but I was getting angry by this time)) I gave him the blue towels that he had sneakily concealed under the beds and suggested he find some beds at the back of the beach or throw some towels off his fellow countrymens beds. The next thing he'd come back with security with his gobby wife calling me a sabateur! And security told us to move. Needless to say by this point I was fuming and further words were exchanged (that would be wise not to go into on here). I naturally made a complaint to guest relations with a few suggestions, but I will make a point of researching the towels on sunbeds pol8icy before booking any hotel in the future. Selfish bastards.

I was in the right as far as i'm concerned and i'm British so i'm hardly going to be deprived of a sun lounger by their selfish tactics. That said I doubt you'd be able to lay in the sun without turning into a lobster so you'll never have the need to stand your ground and fly the flag in a sun bed war.

I did, but wasn't going to argue with security because the next step would have been the police. Not a wise move when abroad.

Complain to the hotel manager, to the local tourist board, to the local council, the newspapers. Take photographs of the offenders if necessary. Let the whole world know who they are and what they are like. Any proper hotel should have a lounger-monitor who removes possessions if the lounger is not used for 30 minutes. I was on holiday in Tobago once and the same thing was happening there. I was very tempted to get up at 5:00 and put towels, books etc. on every bed I could find. I even had a tug-of-war with a german when I tried to take a sunbed that was in the gardens 30 yards from his patio. I gave him a gobful in his own language and let him know what I thought of him. Not that they are all germans, mind you. We has a problem a cuple of weeks ago with a woman who was hogging two parasols for herself and her absent companion who had not returned even two hours later. These people should be shot. We sometimes have the same problem on cruise ships. The only real solution is for a member of staff to do it.

I will say that most young germans that I have met have been extremely kind and considerate. Something must happen when they go on holiday?

you should have told the german that all you were doing was enacting a policy of lebensraum and if he didn't like it he could always push off to the Zyclon-B store and indulge in his country's favourite pastime down the local synagogue.

A hotel in Malta had issues with the German's setting their watches for 6am, getting up and then reserving all the sun loungers. Of course, come 10am they where all 'reserved' but none used.

 

The hotel management then imposed a policy of confiscating all towels placed onto them before 9am. It stopped the cultural clash in it's tracks and ensured that the pool side was then reasonably busy all day.

Placing towels on sun loungers is now common place the world over. Brits do it as much as the Jerrys, as do Yanks, French, etc.

 

You either get up early and 'reserve' your own or deal with it.

 

Hotels need to establish a policy on this problem. I think if no one is using the 'reserved' bed by 10.30/11am then the towels are removed - this would stop a lot of the problem.

But usually a few quid to the towel attendant at the start of the holiday and a nod and a wink will ensure you get a couple of sunbeds reserved by him for the length of your stay.
