Holiday 2011

No, not a new Cliff Michlemore TV programme but an ideas repository for where to go for our summer holidays next year.

I've got a fairly loose budget - somewhere between £3k and £5k all in.

The Trousers family comprises two relatively responsible adults and two children who will be age 11 and 14.

None of us can agree on where to go apart from 'it needs to be somewhere warm please Daddy' (we did Wales this year - nuff said)

Any ideas?

the most amazing holiday i have ever done was a week on Safari in Tanzania and then a week all in in Kenya, was £2k each for adults, not sure about the kids price. We went the last two weeks of August and the temprature was a pleasant 28 degrees most days but on safari got f***ing cold of a night, especially at the top of Ngorogoro crater in Tanzania. We saw all of the big 5, watched a Cheetah stalking a a herd of Gazelles, saw a Leopard cub and a female leopard carrying her cub in her mouth, it was unreal. 7 days in a Jeep might be a bit much for the kids though and it might be a bit is out of your budget including the kids, but you can book safaris locally for 2-3 days from your AI resort in Kenya for £300 each or before you go. You can get a decent AI for two weeks in Kenya for no more than £800 each. Your kids will love it, the right age to appreciate that sort of thing. It honestly takes you breath away, the first night we had our dinner in over looking a watering hole while elephants washed themselves in it.

Outside of that Cuba is amazing and reasonable, got 4 Star AI there for £750. http://www.travelzoo.co.uk is a good place to look.

Best holiday we've had in the past few years. My 2 are 9 and 11. Food is top quality, staff unbelievable and plenty of stuff to do by pool or on beach. Only downside is there's not a great deal going on in the evenings for adults, apart from stting around drinking the All inclusive drinks. Mix of Italians, Germans and English and we met loads of nice people.Relaxing and cheap considering the quality of the food. Depends on what your 14 year olds like, there are plenty of sport and games going on, but no discos ect in the evening, just a fews shows which maybe a bit young for a 14 year old.

I got it from trip Advisor, some of the best reviews I've seen and it didn't let us down.

Looks great, I'm always looking for word of mouth places to go, and I do use trip advisor, but for budgetary reasons I don't go on many holidays, usually it's once every two years and even then it's mostly in England. That said, we went to Camp De Mar in Majorca last year and had a great time, the area is a little secluded for those that fancy some nightlife, but I can't fault the hotel for customer service, food and accomodation.

We were thinking of going away in November for some winter sun, but decided to save up a bit more and have a summer holiday next year instead. I'll definitely check this place out.

Well of course there is always Orlando if you like that sort of thing (theme parks), some love it some hate it. We've been twice with our 11 yr old. Have done Disney / Universal / Sea World, not that bothered about doing it again though. this year we spent one week in Orlando then one week further south on the Gulf Coast and did the Everglades, would recommend that.

We went here : http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g297962-d507359-Reviews-World_of_Wonders_Kremlin_Palace-Antalya_Turkish_Mediterranean_Coast.html

Two adults [ish], and 16 year old Kevin the teenager and a five year old.

We had an enormous family room - huge bed in bedroom with bathroom and hallway downstairs, twin beds with another bathroom upstairs.

Weather was great, pool was never really busy with plenty of room for messing around, separate slide pools, and a toddler slide pool, 5 minute walk through the hotel grounds to the beach. Food was excellent, packages are all inclusive, and you get to use the facilities of the sister hotel next door.

It's chalked up as a five star hotel, but expect 3/4 star 'English' standards and you won't be disappointed. Staff were very friendly and helpful and plenty of entertainment laid on for kids and adults.

i'm thinking about going there in April time, would you recomended it? Things to do, heard there is a tiger sanctory in North Goa, is this true?

I did a tour of india in 1998 and ended up in Goa where my auntie and uncle were living at the time. Great place and was much needed after some of the shocking sights throughout the rest of India. Stay near bog malo (??) beach in Goa as it's a great area with nice locals.

I would advise doing the tour of western India if you're going to go all that way. The taj mahal for example was a must see. Saw it twice as had to go back to see it at sun rise.

I think the tiger sanctuary you refer to is the one in ranthambore and although we didn't see a tiger we saw lots of sloth bears and various other animals, all in their natural habitat.

If I can help with any other india queries feel free to get in touch :-D

Thanks, i will :-D. Bit torn at the moment, really want to do Goa as heard great things about it, but like you say, if your going to go all that way then its worth doing some sort of tour/trip round India, while we are there, which is going to be a little bit out of my budget for April.

How long are you thinking of going for? I'm trying to think about things there are to do in Goa alone. I spent two weeks there and spent pretty much all of it down at the beach (not that there Is anything wrong with that - great setting for meals on the beach at the many restaurants) Depends if you really want to 'experience india' or not as Goa in no way represents what India is really like. Goa is a bit of paradise in an otherwise eye opening country. Even the roughest parts of India were beautiful in very different ways though.

If I remember rightly we used travelbag for the tour and it was a very well organised tour with the travelling time broken up nicely.

Best of luck with pondering it all :)

2-3 weeks, seen some tours which include Dehli, the Taj Mahal, Agra, Jaipur, the Tiger sanctory and then finishing in Goa. They are a bit out of my budget for April time but maybe look at about this time next year to do, that. Ideally like to see a bit of India as well as Goa as on pondering it all it seems a bit pointless just going to Goa then going back and doing all the stuff we want to do anyway a year later.

That sounds like exactly the same tour that I did. Each of those places have something to offer.

3 weeks should be the minimum really but you'll want to stay longer.

Get it booked mate ;-)

Vietnam

Beach time at Swisshotel Hoi Ann and the whole culture and tour through the country from Ho Chi Minh City, Hoi An, Hue, Hanoi & Halong Bay

On your own or with the Missus? 3 or 4 nights on Bourbon Street.

Nothing else I have done comes close (apart from Stag Weekends in Bangkok but then....) 8)

For those heading to Florida and looking for something more than just Disney then this place in Key Largo was a true gem that I found.

http://keylimesailingclub.com/index2.htm

It is a small location with a few huts and sheds that have been converted into really nice air conditioned self catering apartments.

At the right time of year they can cost as little as $100 per night. Each unit comes with a 14ft cabin Sailing boat for the duration with Sea Kayaks and snorkelling/fishing gear. The owners are qualified instructors and can get you out on the water in about 2 hours (was $50 an hour for that when I went). Huts have basic kitchenette/cooking facilities and a BBQ, there's a Publix supermarket up the road and a great Diner close to the site for Breakfasts.

If not sailing then you can still do the whole "Keys" thing

I absolutely loved it a couple of years back and it is on my list of grat places I want to go back to
