Chaplow - signed a 2 and a half year deal - OFFICIAL

It's nice to see us benefiting from a really good deal for once.

You will not get a better player for that price anywhere, we're fortunate his PNE time didn't work out - that's not because he's rubbish, because he's easily a top half championship CM when on form.

Good work from the hierarchy at the club,an absolute steal if the fee is to be believed.

Right,move onto the next one.

I remain amazed that this squad reqiures the rebuilding that some mention however.

Our squad was almost complete second half of last season, but we all seem to forget that we lost two wingers/strikers in the summer and didn't replace them.

What about the signing of Dickson and the progression into 1st team contention of Chamberlain?

One's not really a winger and the other is only 17. I'm not saying our squad is threadbare, I said our squad isn't complete. We need at least one more winger so we don't need to have a left-back as cover for LM.

Eff Me! Chaplow must think all his Christmasses have come on the same day if he really has landed a 2 1/2 year contract. Not even his mother wants him back home! I'll bet he's chuffed being valued at £50k even Eastleigh could afford that, where he'll likely end up on loan.

Pretty much every single fan on here appears to love this signing. You clearly don't, I'm intrigued to know why? The lad dives in and his runs leave us a little open at times, but other than that I find it hard to find fault him at this level. In the NPC things may be very different, but I'll worry about that then. Can you give a little more detail as to why you don't rate him?

Dickson is not bad cover though is he. I still don't understand Saints fans that don't rate this guy. He runs all day long, has a good touch, is willing to try and beat his man, a great cross and strong defensively.

Definately a strange one.

The way i see it is that he is not the finished article, nor is he probably as good as many on here think, but at 50k he is a steal and strengthens a position that we have been crying out to strengthen for over a season. He gives us different options and is a commited ball winner. I certainly couldn't think of many players that CDAJ as well as he could, at his age and this level for as cheap as we have got him.

He sometimes is not the best passer, he is sometimes a bit rash, but what he has got is passion and we can hope he wants to play for the shirt and play to prove a point.

Great signing IMO. Now we need a striker and if Puncheon doesn't want to return a new wide player.

I like him and prefer him to Harding. I remember back to the Plymouth game and wondering how nobody was able to get on the end of one of his crosses. I like the lad.

is he? I like him a lot, he has been absolutely bloody brilliant since his return, but don't underestimate the quality of the divison above where he has yet to shine if truth be told.

I do rate him, just saying that i'd like another winger. Considering that right now we have Lallana and Chamberlain (and Dickson if you want to include him) I don't think that's too unreasonable a statement. I don't include Holmes as he is far too unreliable.

he's genuine. Exactky how the Brentford fans described him. I was amazed he was dropped for Harding for the last game as he was possibly our best player against Brentford.

harding is a better defender IMO but offers a lot less in going forward..

adkins said as much as we had to deal with a bloody good right winger the other day...and we did well in keeping him quiet

The games a saw of him when Harding was out i was very impressed. Don't get me wrong i watch Harding and he seems a brick wall at times and is commited but Dickson is still growing and developing, has bundles of energy, decent pace, gets up and down well and defends well. He also IMO crosses the ball as well as anyone at the club. He perhaps deos not work quite as well with Lallana as Harding does but IMO thats because Harding is first and foremost a defender and Dickson enjoys his forays forward (but in his defence he ALWAYS seems to have the energy to get back again)

agreed, unless Puncheon comes back or we can get someone in better than we have - not easy with the two we have, but improving on Puncheon may be possible.

Our best bet is probably loaning someone till the end of the season and then seeing who we can attract if we go up. Kightly would be my first choice.

Ryan Harley, Pilkington, Pugh.

Any of them would be good signings and realistic(ish), Pilkington may cost a pretty penny. Unless we can pinch a player from the championship. We do need an extra body in that can play on the wing. But its not an absolute necesity. We defo need someone that puts the ball away in some regularity though, thats been our downfall this season. We create enough but are just not clinical enough, unless someone found Lambert his shooting boots from the back of the shed.

very good point indeed and not something I considered. Big pat on the back for Adkins as it pretty much worked. I think I'd still be a bit dissapointed if I was Dickson as he is a very good defender as well. Not seen a winger beat him yet. Harding was given a tough time I might add and was far from his best.

that is the squad game these days..having different players that offer different things...

their right winger is a fantastic player and one I would love here at SMS

another reason why the game went flat at the end..as nige put chaplow out on the right wing (as they were pushing more down their right) and rotated lallana and dickson in the middle...

is it realistic that we sign a player from Huddersfield whilst both teams are competing for promotion? He certainly looked the part.

good...works hard and a stand out player for them....

he is off to brighton..was on the local news that the clubs have agreed a fee..

plymouth are fooked

teach them to turn Wotton out on his ear.

Noone is left footed so I read. I guess we might be looking for a right winger, perhaps a right footed one should Puncheon leave.

Agree completely. Hammond looks a lot more relaxed with Chaplow in there instead of Morgan. I think Hammond can concentrate more on his own game (which is massively underrated by a lot of Saints fans IMO) when he has a partner with the dynamism of Chaplow. This isn't an attempt to slag off Morgan, I just think Chaplow complements Hammond better.

Decent enough, but I think he's a bit of a red card waiting to happen.

Unless he was sent off for Preston he has never had a red card in his pro career........but he does look a bit rash on accasion.

Rather that than fannying about like some of our centrl midfielders so !!

that song should only be for Marsden, Paul Wotton micky take apart.

Disagree. Chris Marsden is my all-time favourite player, and I don't think Paul Wotton deserves the song. Chaplow is bald; and we have yet to see what he comes up with against Ipswich away.

This^^^ not many people get past Harding. Dickson is a bit light weight for me gets pushed off the ball far to easily. He started as a winger and only moved to LB at Brentford. Personally think he should go back to the wing and leave the LB postion to Harding (and Mills)

I remember him from his time at Burnley, rated as one of the best young players in the championship at that point and got a move to the prem for just under £2m.

If he can get back to that level and perform to his potential then we've got a star.

Very pleased with this signing, I liked Chaplow first time around. The guy seems to have a good attitude, coming back to St Mary's on for the end of season stroll round the pitch even though his loan spell had ended was an indication of this.

Good bit of business.

Indeed.

Good signing who adds a bit of steel to the midfield.

Out of interest what is the pace like in our midfield ( Chappers, Hammond , Spiderman ) ?

well Hammond's biggest problem is his lack of pace. He works very hard but you'll often see him on his arse (after a desperate lunge)because he is just not quick enough (lesss so this season thsan last I might point out). With pace he'd play at a higher level without doubt. Chappers is certainly quicker across the ground but its his engine that you really notice. He just keeps going and going. Schneiderlin is very quick across the ground. I've seen him outrun opposing pacey strikers. A Morgan/Chaplow partnership might be the quickest around, but of course pace isn't everything.
