shirleysfc Posted 28 September, 2010 Share Posted 28 September, 2010 Are these guys for real?? Do Scientologists believe in space aliens? Scientology does teach that many of our problems are caused by the spirits of space aliens that are stuck to our bodies. However, that teaching is considered confidential and is only taught to Scientologists who have reached a certain level, known in Scientology as OT III - so a lot of Scientologists are actually unaware that this is an important Scientology teaching. What, exactly, does Scientology say about space aliens? In the materials for OT III (Operating Thetan level 3), L. Ron Hubbard writes that, 75 million years ago, the head of the Galactic Federation, made up of 76 planets, was a being named Xenu. Faced with an overpopulation problem, he brought beings to this planet, blew them up with hydrogen bombs, and packaged them. Their spirits now infest our bodies: he says "One's body is a mass of individual thetans stuck to oneself or to the body." Scientologists at this level try to rid themselves of these thetans (spirits) by helping each one to remember the painful experiences of being blown up like that. http://www.scientology-lies.com/faq/teachings/aliens.html
Weston Super Saint Posted 28 September, 2010 Share Posted 28 September, 2010 How are the scientologists 'unaware' of the confidential teachings of OT III when they are freely available on the innernetz? Frankly, if they are too stupid to do a simple google search, they clearly deserve to remain in the dark, being fed sh i t, just like mushrooms. Verbal Posted 28 September, 2010 Share Posted 28 September, 2010 The weirdness of scientology isn't the problem - it's the thuggish, oppressive way in which they deal with dissenters and critics. Campaigns of sustained intimidation are common, not just against those who have the temerity to leave, but against anyone who investigates them in any way whatsoever. CB Saint Posted 29 September, 2010 Share Posted 29 September, 2010 Sounds like any other religion to me For example we are led to believe that Mary got pregnant without the prerequisite slap and tickle, moses rocked up to the Red Sea and parted it without use of dams etc and any muslim will be entitled to 40 virgins for eternity if he straps on a dynamite vest. As for thuggery towards dissenters see dynamite vest above and the spanish inquisition.

SNSUN Posted 29 September, 2010 Share Posted 29 September, 2010 Everyone has the right to a religion, no matter how weird it is, but not if it is rammed down people's throats. Jehovah's Witnesses are a prime example to this, if I wanted to hear passages from the bible, I'd go to church. I don't expect to be interrupted from a daytime Tommy Tank to answer the door to these people.

Wade Garrett Posted 29 September, 2010 Share Posted 29 September, 2010 I think it's hilarious that people like Tom Cruise and John Travolta believe in the teachings of a science fiction writer. What a load of idiots they all are. I know someone who went to a ' meeting' without knowing what it was all about. He got a really offensive handwritten letter afterwards, when he wanted nothing to do with it all. They prey on the vulnerable. I don't like to say it, but I really would like personally to do them physical harm. Scientology my arse.

But that's all that religions really are. it's just that some cults are a lot bigger than others and have somehow worked their way into global politics. As to the aliens thing, to my mind it is no more irrational or unlikely than the Christian belief that some cosmic Jewish zombie can make you live forever if you symbolically eat of his flesh and telepathically tell him that you accept him as your master so he can remove an evil spirit that exists in mankind because some rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat fruit from some magic tree. I watched that programme last night and thought it showed the sect up for what it was. But, immediately after the 10 o'clock news, there was another programme. One of the stories featured was of a woman whose family belonged to a Christian sect. Judging by the headscarves the female members wore, I think it was the Plymouth Brethren. The poor woman was cut off from her family because she chose to leave the sect. She directly attributed her eating disorders to the pressure the sect put on her. for_heaven's_Saint Posted 29 September, 2010 Share Posted 29 September, 2010 IIRC the mormon faith was started when a 14 year old boy claimed to have seen an angel (moroni ?) who told him to start the religion. Saintandy666 Posted 29 September, 2010 Share Posted 29 September, 2010 Ok, Catholic church over the last 50 years do yer? Scientology is 10x worse than the catholic church. It deliberately murders, breaks up families and harasses critics and former members(often through targetted hate campaigns in the area which the person lives, digging up secrets from the past etc). This doesn't even touch how much money you are forced to pour into the cult to work your way up. They leave you broken at the end.

For all that scientology is truly loathsome, nothing - but nothing - can compete with the Catholic Church. Or to be more precise, the Roman interpretation of Christianity - which has imposed brutal, mindless authoritarianism, dressed up in the garb of impenetrable ritual. No wonder Blair was such a devotee. The list of the Roman church's crimes are way too long to mention. The Roman diktats about what constituted the Bible - the forced removal of the 'secret' Book of John (a peaen to original Christian values) and the inclusion of several monstrosities in the Old Testament - are reason enough for reasonable people to disregard its message. But the sheer, horrific, often misogynistic violence of its past, and the casual, condoned abuse of the vulnerable in the present, render it beyond the pale. Any notion that Travolta et al, for all their sinister weirdness, can come close is preposterous. I speak, of course, as a lapsed Catholic. Hamilton Saint Posted 11 October, 2010 Share Posted 11 October, 2010 While scientology is ridiculous and in some cases it seems highly unpleasant and dangerous, I find it a bit annoying that it's highlighted as being so stupid while religions are not. The only difference seems to be numbers and history. So if scientology was 2000 years old and followed by millions, it'd be fine? No, it would still be ridiculous. In the documentary one scientologist asked whether the interviewer would be disrespectful of a jews religion in the same way. Well I would. Not trying to upset anyone, but there should be some consistency in the way we treat delusional beliefs. But growing populations of stupid people, fewer resources and more fear isn't exactly concomitant with an end to religion. Unfortunately. So yeah, scientology is insane, almost comical to listen to the beliefs, but a christian should be very careful about mocking it. Being descending from alien life is scientifically possible, I mean if alien means other planet, other part of the universe, then we are, what with the big bang. Most likely there are millions of planets with life out there, so I can't mock it as much as a virgin birth, talking serpent, ark, zombie jesus and so on. Two major distinctions, though: 1) the major religious traditions of today evolved out of beliefs and events thousands of years ago; scientology was invented by a science fiction writer, and its major dogmas (from what little I've read) read like science fiction; 2) Scientology is clearly a cult that abuses and persecutes those who turn against it - you don't get that behaviour aimed at apostates of most other religions. Also people are using extreme examples of other religions to compare them to Scientology. Extreme practices such as disconnection are widespread in the Scientology "church." The same cannot be said for other religions such as Christianity which nevertheless is going to get loads of idiots following it purely due to its size. That doesn't IMO make the religion itself bad. Not sure you can say the same for Scientology or at least not for the people currently running Scientology.
