whats the distance? about 35 miles?.................

Just thought I'd check out the distances - on google earth SMS to Dean Court is 23 miles, for comparison SMS to Krap Notarf is 16 miles - so not much in it.

I was brought up in Holbury, and just discovered that our old house is exactly due south of Saint Marys (4.65 miles)!!

I went to the old Brockenhurst Grammar and in those days Christchurch and Bournemouth were still in Hampshire and a lot of my school friends came from the Xchurch/New Milton area and also Ringwood (only about 8 miles from Dean Court and I bet a lot of saints fans live in the Ringwood area).

So for anyone in the Forest area it could easily be classed as a local derby

or Hamworthy

The distance would be considered by most other teams... as such under normal circumstances it is a local derby.....

In reality we all consider Pompey our local derby.....

Don't really feel any kind of dislike towards them, they're just another team in L1 as far as i'm concerned. It's actually quite funny reading their boards to see what they write about us, calling us scummers and everything...

There will inevitably be nawty boys on both sides who will cause something that the press can focus on to bump up the 'derby factor' involved with the game, but i'm just looking forward to it as a good game and 3 points to come away with!

I wish you lot would get a life and just put it out of your minds...there is only one derby and that is against the blue few down the road.

Bournemouth have no history of being rivals - infact they are more likely to be described as a feeder club or a place where our young stars cut their teeth not being too far from home!

As for Bournemouth fans trying to big it up and trying to call us Scummers - they haven't even got an original name for us!!!

Southampton v. Pompey isn't a true derby - now Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Liverpool define what derbies are all about. London derbies are two a penny - but ask any West Ham fan - his derby is with Millwall - likewise Spurs and Arsenal. Rivalry is healthy - but all of a sudden Bournemouth has a youth policy and not OAP trouble makers and they want to be our rivals.

Anyway enjoy people - I'll be swigging beer at the local annual beer festival with one eye on the score (as both eyes will not be in focus!)

Bournemouth - the sunshine capital of Dorset, with plenty of activity for pensioners! I know there is a big students presence down there having visited one summers evening a couple of years ago - and the clubbing drinking culture has changed from Darby & Joan + Complan to Jack & Jill's + shots...but honestly rivals to the mighty Saints...get a life!

Just trying to work out what you're actually getting at there. I'd say just about everyone that's contributed to this thread who you want to "get a life" has said nothing different to what you've just done...just in fewer words!

99.9% don't class them as local rivals, 99.9% appear to also only put the blue few in that category.

they feel just like just another south coast team to me, like a Plymouth or a Brighton. Hope we win obviously, but I don't regard it as a Derby.

Ready for the game with my daughter.....

Informed by shop... next batch of new shirts available on saturday.

Daughter will be pleased.......

very jealous of their old mans shirt..

A win against Yeovil and a good win against the cherries will put us up amongst the contenders..

That's 'as-the-crow-flies', by road it's 34 miles.

The main difference between the skates and B'mouth is not only are we in the same county as the blue-few but the 17 miles between us is filled with the overspill of both cities and overlap so many are living in each others faces which just intensifies the rivalry.

it is a freindly derby match and a lot of saints fans are in the bournemouth area and where i sit i know a fan who has a bournemouth and saints season ticket who comes up from bournemouth.

I think it just shows that this game means a bit more than any other by the fact that it will be close to a sell out!

Also I cannot stand them. We always helped them out when in finacial trouble and they just threw it all back in our faces, ungrateful gits!

Bet there's a few Bournemouth in the Saints ends on Saturday. Even if the game is database only there will be loads who will be on it and can get a ticket.

Of course there will, secretly most of their fans have come up the road a few times to watch premiership football. Can't blame them really.

What like the 100s of skates who had "tickets with the home fans" at SMS in the cup?

If there were one or maybe two they certainly didn't make themselves known.

a bit more amusing than "whats your favourite sandwich?" dont you agree?

Must give credit to their manager who has worked wonders, but as for some of their pathetc fans, they should stick to clubs of similar size for their rivalry like Weymouth and Dorchester.

To hear some of their muppet fans singer "scummers" at the tops of their voices to us-pathetic.

suppose they will be bring their deck chairs and sticks of rock with them, cannot remember any game against them.

they are irrelevant, suppose they will be bring 50% of their home gate with them, hope NC ups the price of their food and drink

Bournemouth are in great form and deserve to be where they are. I dont see this as a derby however bragging rights are all important and i dont think i can stand them all boasting about a win until we next play.

Saying all that, i cant see anything other than a win for bournemouth.

To be fair on Bournemouth, I would hate Saints if I lived there and the locals would go to St Mary's rather than go to Dean Court (when in the Prem).

The AFC Bournemouth website and a few other national and local media outlets are calling it the "New Forest Derby".

The 'New Forest' Derby! That makes the rivalry sound even greater!

I don't feel any hatred towards them, actually quite like them as our nearset club apart from the Skates and because I went to Uni there. I even still find myself looking out for their results even though we are in the same division

Hypochondriac's thread on footballforums.net gives some of their fans' perspective on it. They SO want us as rivals, bless them.

I'd say there were just as many Saints fans giving it large than Bournemouth and that post was started by one of our fans.

Whilst not rivals - it is a local derby it's so close (our closest game of the season and second closest overall in all leagues) as so many fans work with people that support each other teams.

Whether we like it or not, we're in league one competing against them. We were in that league last season, we're in it this season and the way things are going, we'll be here next season too.

Jesus wept, "The New Forest Derby" sounds like either a **** horse race or the gheyest football rivalry ever. For the attention of the media; IT IS NOT A DERBY!

:) True.

Can I be the first to welcome this new Bournmouth fan ;)

To be fair the two major conurbations which border the New Forest are - Southampton and Bournemouth

I’d give that honour to Totton and Christchurch tbf. Between Southampton and the New Forest is a sizeable stretch of water and the Waterside towns. I wouldn’t think too many actually from the city of Southampton would consider us part of the New Forest in any way. It is, like Bournemouth, a nice place to visit but then come home back to real life.

Sway v New Milton, I’d say that’s a “New Forest Derby”.
