Dismissal? He / she should have been locked up for that. Misuse of public funds - criminal offence.

Consultants? No....and I know of that for an absolute fact.

Technically not as the prices were competitive. However, he was dismissed for not following proper procurement procedures and for being 'influenced' to decide who to award the contracts to. We all know there's an element of 'buggins turn' in the construction industry.

In fact, the Audit Commission (now defunct) produced a list of big construction companies who benefited from cartels and rigged bidding. I bet such companies are rubbing their hands in glee now that the Audit Commission has been disbanded.

I don't understand your second sentence.

For Consultants - who are self-employed FYI

Public sector workers aren't allowed to receive perks - they can be construed as bribery. When I was in Procurement for the NHS I couldn't even accept a 'complimentary' pen!

An audit colleague of mine was instrumental in securing the dismissal of a capital projects manager who received golf days and bottles of whisky in return for awarding contracts to a construction company.

This....not just limited to consultants.

NHS Discount.

It's not offered or managed by the NHS though, is it. It's just local businesses offering discounts in the same way as they do to other large employers.

The only discounts available to me seemed to be for things I'd never want from businesses near where I worked.

Company car, free BUPA for myself, partner and kids and the usual discounts in various shops for showing my ID card!!

Get about 4 overseas trips a year too, all at the customers (well, licence fee payers) expense!!

Non contributory final salary pension and retirement at 51 on a pension that means I have no need to work again, just enjoy life, which of course for the last 7 years is exactly what I have been doing.

Found out today that I will be going on a secondment for about 4 months or so. It's around 40 miles from my normal work place and I will be able to claim 40p per mile for driving there and back every day. I reckon I'll make at least £100 each week "profit" on that. I haven't taken into account depreciation on my motor but it's only done 11k miles so not too worried about the extra.

Happy days!

Did you know you'll be taxed on it?

Final Salary pension scheme (becoming pretty rare now), private health care, that's about it, but with my additional investments i'll be retired by the time i'm 57. Hopefully earlier.

Just looked it up - pretty sure it will be tax free.

Woot.

Yeah I've just looked it up too and I think you're OK. I think the reason I was taxed is because I was refunded at 43p a mile.

Sorry for the false alarm :)

Hopefully you were only taxed on the 3p! :)
