Dr Who? Posted 23 September, 2010 Share Posted 23 September, 2010 As the boss is off this morning I have been looking for places to go on a long weekend break! I really want to go to Dublin, Berlin, Riga, somewhere in Austria in the snow up a mountain. It would be me and the wife, or with the two kids as well 2 and 8 year old. What has been the best long weekend break you have been on? I have done the normal, Amsterdam, Bruge twice (Brilliant for a short break with the kids) , and Prague, but looking for another different place. I went to Austria with the wife once in June '97 I think it was. Rained constantly for the whole week. 2nd day we took a cable car to the top of the valley and the snow was 6ft deep One of the best er, summer holidays we've had. The centre is nowhere near as large and impressive as either Talin or Vilnius. All three have plenty of nightlife. Best I've been on was either Seville or Vienna, both lovely places, but I enjoyed them for the company I had.
Petersfield Saint Posted 23 September, 2010 Share Posted 23 September, 2010 Barcelona is lovely for an Autumn/Winter weekend break - beautiful city and loads to do. Wrap up warm though as after about mid-Nov it's colder than you expect!

About 4 years ago I had a trip planned over 10 days to visit, Helsinki, Stockholm, Riga, Talin. Just a couple of days in each and the rest traveling on ferries or flying, but we moved from Southampton and that went out the window!!
Joensuu Posted 23 September, 2010 Share Posted 23 September, 2010 This is another one on my list. About 4 years ago I had a trip planned over 10 days to visit, Helsinki, Stockholm, Riga, Talin. Just a couple of days in each and the rest traveling on ferries or flying, but we moved from Southampton and that went out the window!! Never been to Stockholm, but they say it's one of the best cities in the world to live in. Helsinki didn't impress me much, not a lot to do, there's a Swedish fort on an island, a couple of churches (one in a cave), and an interesting art deco station, but to be honest, not a lot else going on. There are ferries/helicopters connecting Helsinki to Talinn. I've heard, that Tampere is a more interesting town in Finlanda. Talinn, is much prettier than Helsinki, but once you've done some medieval walls and church tower climbs (St Olaf is pretty tall...) and of course sink a few beers in the expensive town centre, you quickly run out of things to keep you entertained. The same could be said about Riga. Between the two cities I popped in on both Kurasaare (sp), and Turku. The former is tiny, with a reasonable castle, and took hours to get to. The latter is not as interesting at the guide books made out. While Talinn is the prettiest of the whole lot, I think Vilnius in Lithuania is the best town out of the lot to visit. The old town centre was much bigger than Talinn (if not as filled with Disneyish towers). Vilniuss felt vibrant and still in use, rather than touristified and sanitised. Edit: Oh, and the Finnish town of 'Joensuu' isn't worth visiting at all. It's like Basingstoke without transport links on a lake in the middle of nowhere. eurosaint Posted 23 September, 2010 Share Posted 23 September, 2010 Came back from Istanbul yesterday and was pleasantly surprised just how interesting and enjoyable it was ! It really is the city where east meets west (being divided by the Bosphorus) and the culture and history reflects this ! The downside was that it was quite expensive, although I'm sure that you could do it more cheaply if you avoided top hotels, restaurants and personal guides like we did ! OldNick Posted 23 September, 2010 Share Posted 23 September, 2010 Woolstonbul and Millbrookholm are pleasant I'm told. You have to watch out for pickpockets though. Apparently the jellied hedgehog and squirrel wraps are delicious. My friends visited at night and they said the local youngsters set fire to their cars, it was traditional they were told and then the little rascals threw rocks at the firemen as a greeting. Istanbul is a fantastic city and would make a great long weekend away, especially now the weather is cooling down a bit over there, would highly recommend. Sour Mash Posted 23 September, 2010 Share Posted 23 September, 2010 Barcelona is lovely for an Autumn/Winter weekend break - beautiful city and loads to do. Wrap up warm though as after about mid-Nov it's colder than you expect! Could very well have just been my take on it, but I found Barcelona the most over-rated city I've ever been to. Everyone raves about it, but while there was not much that was particularly bad about it, I really can't see what make it stand out from loads of similar southern European cities. Sour Mash Posted 23 September, 2010 Share Posted 23 September, 2010 A definite good winter weekend break abroad would be Naples. Really lively, interesting city, great football to go and watch and Pompei etc a short journey away, plus not too cold at any time and not too touristy as a city, unlike a lot of the obvious choices. JRM Posted 23 September, 2010 Share Posted 23 September, 2010 I agree, Istanbul is a great shout for 3-4 days , so much to see and do, take in the culture and history, really recommend doing a match while you are there, see what a real atmosphere is like. Napoli is a good choice, something a bit different, but can visit Pompeii, or go down the road to Sorrento or the ferry to Capri.
