Hatch Posted 23 September, 2010 Share Posted 23 September, 2010 Out of interest mate, which other grounds do you think have had a better atmosphere than the Northam? I can only think of maybe one or two. Do you really think there are only 1 or 2 grounds in the country with a better atmosphere than the Northam? Saint_clark Posted 23 September, 2010 Share Posted 23 September, 2010 Do you really think there are only 1 or 2 grounds in the country with a better atmosphere than the Northam? I assumed he meant in this league. People do seem to have this false impression that almost every other ground has a loud atmosphere sustained over the whole 90 minutes. The only times I have ever seen that happen at SMS was Norwich 2005, Sheffield united 2008, the MK Dons in the JPT game last season and the Pompey game. My post was in reply to another post. Where have you been that you think has a consistently better atmosphere than the Northam? And before you say anything, I know the Northam is far from brilliant these days. So lets hear where these great places are? I'd say Swindon's home support was good when we went there. Sour Mash Posted 23 September, 2010 Share Posted 23 September, 2010 Swindon's home support good? When they scored maybe, other than that, No. Sorry mate, but it was good, better than most other places we've been the last few years, had a proper end behind the goal that kept going most of the match and the whole ground joined in a fair few times. Yes, they seem to think of us as a "big game" for whatever reason and had a good crowd compared to their usual standards, but yeah, without doubt Swindon are one of the better supports we've seen. Yeah good shout on Oldham to be fair, the lot they had to our right were a bit lively and I'd agree with Swansea being half decent, wouldn't say either were much better than the Northam though. And not many other decent ones out there is there?
Bucks Saint Posted 23 September, 2010 Share Posted 23 September, 2010 (edited) I know this thread started about the Northam but seeing as its progressed to supporter noise levels in general I will mention this. Last season I went to about 10 away games, when I usually only do 4 or 5. I admit I got swept up in the general feel good factor, the novelty of seeing us win often, and the other novelty of seeing some new grounds. Clearly I was not alone in this, as demonstrated by our travelling attendance numbers. However, unlike every other season I can remember, the level of noise we generated was often pretty patchy. At MKD in the JPT nearly 3000 trekked there mid week, for a 7pm Kick Off, which was on TV. Very commendable, except the majority stood there the whole game and failed to join in any singing. Ditto Northampton in the FA Cup, Swindon early season (though we were total pants of course) and Brentford was pretty mixed. While the noise at Hartlepool and Bristol City was fantastic, and some others were pretty good, it used to be excellent at every away match. Is this further evidence that the TYPE of support we get now is changing, and is different to a few years back - and its not restricted to just those in the Northam? saintscottofthenortham Posted 23 September, 2010 Share Posted 23 September, 2010 Out of interest mate, which other grounds do you think have had a better atmosphere than the Northam? I can only think of maybe one or two. Last Season; Galpharm - Whole ground was noisy (apart from us at the away end), but the stand to the right of the away fans was very noisy indeed. County Ground - The stand at the other end of the ground from the away terrace... very small, crappy little stand, but they made good noise. Boundary Park - The fans next to us were very good throughout. Although they lost 1-3, they kept going. One of the more intimidating stands I have visited. Visited loads more last season but these are the ones that stand out to me. Alot were absolutely **** poor and not a patch on our atmosphere, but there were more that would be on par with what I think we sound like from the opposite end of the ground. Just look at the likes of The Den and Turf Moor... Grounds of clubs that many of our fans would say are smaller clubs than us, that have vastly smaller capacities, but there fans generate alot more noise. The Northam has had it's moments, but i think it will be much the same carp as it is now until we are back near the top of the Championship
The9 Posted 23 September, 2010 Share Posted 23 September, 2010 Now, I understand this might be a touch controversial but I wondered if anyone else in the Northerm Stand is finding themselves more and more frustrated to the poiunt of embarrassed at the actions of the fans up there. I will list a few things below for you to rip apart in you own particular way. The day we were all giving thanks for Marcus' life, within the first five minutes of the game a player goes down on the opposing side and the song 'let him die' flys around from the back rows. - Take a moment to think about it lads. Lloyd James was booed until being drowned-out by the rest of the stadium on Saturday. The team were booed from there after Saturday. - I realise this is pretty subjective but IMO it was nearly good enough and far from a **** performance. There are more but I think you get the message, apart from the fact that I can't be arsed to type anymore. Wondered what you lot think about this.. The back of the Northam has always been full of thick nobheads, and the few who weren't tend to move after a season or two of being surrounded by them. I know I did... and about 10 other people I know. It's the whole "back seat of the bus" mentality, used to have about 3 people per seat up there in the Prem days too. NickG Posted 23 September, 2010 Share Posted 23 September, 2010 thought it was just me getting old when I found the northam more irritating and moved to Itchen. Hurt my leg in car accident couple of years ago, so was quite happily sitting down watching the game - when some spotty git told me I most love the skates as I wasn't standing up to "stand up if you hate the skates". It was hard to argue with his intellectual logic - so I explained his error in a way he could understand!
Turkish Posted 24 September, 2010 Share Posted 24 September, 2010 (edited) the northam is probably the worst "end" in the football league. For the supposed singing end, it generates a poor atmosphere. The songs are sung far to quickly, too much clapping like retards trying to catch a ball, a lot dont know the words properly and an incapability to sing anything longer than 3 lines properly. There is a desperation that every song is sung as quickly as possible which makes them sound sh*t. Compare the way White Hart Lanes sings "WTSGMI" it sounds a millioon times better, even at SMS when it is done slowly and sounds great, the Northam are desperate to clap and speed it up as much as possible the one time it did look impressive was MK Dons at home in the JPT semi final, the whole end and looked and sounded great, for that reason i dont understand why people were against Corteses idea fo turning the chapel into our own Kop and doing this every week, but then this is a lack of understanding of terrace culture which seems to permeate through our fan base. I agree with this. It's really apparent why this should happen when you sit away from the Northam and just see a couple of blocks of the whole ground singing. This may also dilute the moron element ?!?

The Northam has had it's moments, but i think it will be much the same carp as it is now until we are back near the top of the Championship Well as I stated earlier in the thread I suggested Swindon as being good, and agreed with another poster about Boundary Park being decent. Can't remember Huddersfield being at all loud, but maybe that's just my memory. Pretty much everywhere else we went last year was rubbish and that's taking into consideration that we were a relatively big game for a lot of teams. As you say, there are loads of grounds much worse than St Marys. Spurs are very good these days, but were absolutely silent at home throughout the 90s. The Den is decent when they get going, but completley silent for large parts of the game. Like I say, I agree there are plenty of mongs in the Northam and it's far from what it was, but considering our club is at its lowest point for 40+ years I think the support has remained a lot better than other clubs in similar circumstances. Wade Garrett Posted 24 September, 2010 Share Posted 24 September, 2010 I like it when they give it the 'come on then' to opposing supporters with only a netted section of the ground and a load of coppers between them. Makes me proud when I think about our brave lads. To be fair to them, if it wasn't for the Northam the place would be like a library.

70's Mike Posted 24 September, 2010 Share Posted 24 September, 2010 Glad i am to old to care, all i know was the popular areas at the Dell changed on a regular basis because it is about supporting the team not how you compare with other clubs. in those days, before all ticket, you could have 25% of the attendance as the away fans and they often out numbered those of us who sung. imagine how some would react now if they walked into the Northam at 2.55 to find their area occupied by away fans
simonsaints1 Posted 24 September, 2010 Share Posted 24 September, 2010 It would only take 50 or so to get together at the back of the Chapel to start things off up there-i'm pretty sure more would join in so that when we were attacking that end, there would be a half decent atmos.
