Shroppie Posted 21 September, 2010 Posted 21 September, 2010 Nice easy day trip by train for me and a ground I haven't been to in ages. Planty of time for a look round the city and a few beers (I see the Hillsborough Hotel has its own brewery and looks interesting). Then just need a decent result. Even a goal would be different. I have a good feeling that this is the game things turn round.
ralph_wiggum Posted 21 September, 2010 Posted 21 September, 2010 I am going! Minibus... could be a long drive back!
Saint_Jonny Posted 21 September, 2010 Posted 21 September, 2010 Super short trip in the car for me, never been to hillsborough before, looking forward to it. Am I hopeful? Am I ****.
Bucks Saint Posted 21 September, 2010 Posted 21 September, 2010 Not planning to go again for a long time. Last visit was in early 90's on Easter Monday. Went on the Coach (idiot). Left crack of dawn. It was six days before the League Cup final and Weds rested Waddle, Woods and a host of others. Wow, we have got a decent chance we thought. We lost 5-2. Got a ton of abuse from teenage scumbags. Took hours to get back. Sh*thole of a place and I hate it I think it left a mark.
dickyhale Posted 21 September, 2010 Posted 21 September, 2010 We are Rolly and I. Hopefully see a win 2-0
La BoIS Saint Posted 21 September, 2010 Posted 21 September, 2010 Best city for pubs. Hillsborough Hotel well worth a visit.
Berkshire Saint Posted 21 September, 2010 Posted 21 September, 2010 Yep. Was at University there until this summer so a pretty swift return for me to Sheffield! Conveniently a couple of my mates have a flat in Hillsborough now so am staying with them.
saintbenny Posted 21 September, 2010 Posted 21 September, 2010 the mrs and I will be there. First game of the season. Any idea about parking around the ground?
70's Mike Posted 21 September, 2010 Posted 21 September, 2010 enjoy , not been to Wednesday since 84, on a sunday
SaintNeil90 Posted 21 September, 2010 Posted 21 September, 2010 At Uni here so a short tram ride for me. Got a couple of mates up from 'the spiritual home' coming too.
georgeismyname Posted 21 September, 2010 Posted 21 September, 2010 just booked set me back £92 though!! hope its worth it!!
for_heaven's_Saint Posted 21 September, 2010 Posted 21 September, 2010 First away game of the season for me, going with about 25 other London Saints. Second time at Hillsborough, the other being last time we played them there. I think we could get a result but if not at least the beer will be good!
Saint Garrett Posted 21 September, 2010 Posted 21 September, 2010 Not far for me as at Uni here. Taking a few mates with me, hope I can offer them a good game and a good atmosphere ! Where are people drinking before hand ? There aren't many pubs near the ground that let in away fans I dont think ?
sandwichsaint Posted 21 September, 2010 Posted 21 September, 2010 the mrs and I will be there. First game of the season. Any idea about parking around the ground? I parked to the North of the ground outside a snooker club on a mini industrial estate last time I went - paid 2 or 3 quid (which i got refunded on an hours snooker!). Clean, safe, and gets you out of the city centre traffic and back to the M1 M-Way in about 15 minutes. You walk down a long hill to the ground about 10 minutes and past a big fan-friendly, mixed pub halfway down on the right hand side (can't remember what it was called but lots of Saints in there, decent garden out the back and a little bottle'n'cans cubby hole straight into the beer garden). S6 1JF if that helps?
Charlie Wayman Posted 21 September, 2010 Posted 21 September, 2010 Not me. I have a dental appointment at 2.30 and have elected to have three teeth removed without anesthetic which beats watching Saints in their present stupor anytime. At least when I've finished screaming obscenities at the dentist the agony will be over....

saintwiz Posted 21 September, 2010 Posted 21 September, 2010 I am going. Banbury to Brum train. Brum to Lichfield train. Lift to Sheffield.

Bart-Williams got a hatrick. Thought I'd got over it but you brought it back! Going on Saturday with my daughter.
The Cat Posted 21 September, 2010 Posted 21 September, 2010 Yep. Staying with friends in Leeds after too.
dannysfc Posted 21 September, 2010 Posted 21 September, 2010 I am debating on whether to go as well as if I do go then it will be my 3rd time there and I don't mind Hillsborough Tbh! Will more than likely to get the train there and back sooo is it easier to get the train straight to Sheffield via Birmingham or to go via London? Also where are the best pubs for away fans which are cheap, near the ground n that have SKY/ESPN as well please? Thanks! Fingers crossed that we will get a result up there but I have a feeling that we may get spanked again but this is Saints sooo anything can happen ! COYS !!

scott_saints Posted 22 September, 2010 Posted 22 September, 2010 Minibus with another 15 or so lads. Should be a good day, and a great day if Saints get a win.
Mowgli Posted 22 September, 2010 Posted 22 September, 2010 It looks like there will be over 1,000 of us there. How does that compare to previous years?
Notty1981 Posted 22 September, 2010 Posted 22 September, 2010 Not been to this ground since early prem days, so me and a few mates going up by car on the Saturday morning. Will be my 7 year old nippers first proper away day (other than Wembley back in March of course!!! but these games are totally different atmosphere I think you'll agree), have booked ourselves into a campsite for the night and coming back Sunday, now all we need is a GOAL!!!! COME ON YOU SAINTS!!!!!
Bucks Saint Posted 22 September, 2010 Posted 22 September, 2010 You will find that Sheffield has changed beyond recognition since the early 90s. I agree, the City centre is much improved and there are some decent pubs and restraurants. Saw us win at Sheff Utd in the championship. I was referring to Hilsborough and surrounding area - would be amazed if that has changed much
Sour Mash Posted 22 September, 2010 Posted 22 September, 2010 Any of the Saints fans on here that live in Sheffield know how much a cab/people carrier would cost from the City centre up to Hillsborough?
Shroppie Posted 22 September, 2010 Author Posted 22 September, 2010 Any of the Saints fans on here that live in Sheffield know how much a cab/people carrier would cost from the City centre up to Hillsborough? Tram could be cheaper unless you're a big crowd. Yellow line to Leppings Lane.
tartanowl Posted 22 September, 2010 Posted 22 September, 2010 Any of the Saints fans on here that live in Sheffield know how much a cab/people carrier would cost from the City centre up to Hillsborough? Roughly a tenner. *Edit - I am not a Saints fan
Sour Mash Posted 22 September, 2010 Posted 22 September, 2010 Tram could be cheaper unless you're a big crowd. Yellow line to Leppings Lane. Yeah, I know the tram is an option, just want to see about taxi options, as might be easier for us.
tartanowl Posted 22 September, 2010 Posted 22 September, 2010 Tram could be cheaper unless you're a big crowd. Yellow line to Leppings Lane. A Dayrider on the tram is £3.50.
Appy Posted 22 September, 2010 Posted 22 September, 2010 I am going on a minibus with about 15 others.

There are plenty of pubs, shops and lots of greenery with the park and pond. It's just a smallish residential area. The city centre is far less attractive.

Although I haven't been for a few years, I have been to both Sheff Wed and Utd a few times and I can't ever remember thinking it bad around Hillsborough, I think some people just say any old cr ap to score points. Southampton has got some nice areas but it's also got a lot of 'dodgier' areas and St Mary's isn't exactly the most salubrious district. As much as I love the place.
Yorkshire Saint Posted 22 September, 2010 Posted 22 September, 2010 me + 3 driving down from Horbury Bridge (Wakefield) ...did a warm up event last night took in Luton at Darlington

Yep, always found Hillsborough one of the better northern dumps that we have to visit.
Lallana's Left Peg Posted 22 September, 2010 Posted 22 September, 2010 Hillsborough is fine. I always pay a fiver to park on a garage forecourt and it's always been good for a quick getaway north of the ground back to Manchester!

I wasnt saying any old crap to score points thanks. I was recounting an experience from the early 90s, which resonated with others who were actually there. And for tartanowl, I apologise if things are much better these days. But I dont agree with your dismissal of the city centre (anything to do with Utd being walking distance?) I have had a couple of very good nights out in the centre in the last couple of years

The city centre is good for drinking but Hillsborough is cleaner and greener.
bangkoksaint Posted 22 September, 2010 Posted 22 September, 2010 are there tickets available on the day?
Shroppie Posted 22 September, 2010 Author Posted 22 September, 2010 are there tickets available on the day? Think so. OS just says no student discount on the day.
