Who's going to Sheffield Weds? (on Sat)

Nice easy day trip by train for me and a ground I haven't been to in ages. Planty of time for a look round the city and a few beers (I see the Hillsborough Hotel has its own brewery and looks interesting).

Then just need a decent result. Even a goal would be different. ;)

I have a good feeling that this is the game things turn round.

Not planning to go again for a long time. Last visit was in early 90's on Easter Monday. Went on the Coach (idiot). Left crack of dawn. It was six days before the League Cup final and Weds rested Waddle, Woods and a host of others. Wow, we have got a decent chance we thought.

We lost 5-2. Got a ton of abuse from teenage scumbags. Took hours to get back. Sh*thole of a place and I hate it

I think it left a mark.

Not far for me as at Uni here. Taking a few mates with me, hope I can offer them a good game and a good atmosphere ! Where are people drinking before hand ? There aren't many pubs near the ground that let in away fans I dont think ?

the mrs and I will be there. First game of the season. Any idea about parking around the ground?

I parked to the North of the ground outside a snooker club on a mini industrial estate last time I went - paid 2 or 3 quid (which i got refunded on an hours snooker!).

Clean, safe, and gets you out of the city centre traffic and back to the M1 M-Way in about 15 minutes.

You walk down a long hill to the ground about 10 minutes and past a big fan-friendly, mixed pub halfway down on the right hand side (can't remember what it was called but lots of Saints in there, decent garden out the back and a little bottle'n'cans cubby hole straight into the beer garden).

Not me. I have a dental appointment at 2.30 and have elected to have three teeth removed without anesthetic which beats watching Saints in their present stupor anytime.

At least when I've finished screaming obscenities at the dentist the agony will be over....

Does your dentist charge for parking?

Oh I remember that. Think I took the wife to be with me. Bart-Williams got a hatrick.

Thought I'd got over it but you brought it back!

Going on Saturday with my daughter.

I am debating on whether to go as well as if I do go then it will be my 3rd time there and I don't mind Hillsborough Tbh!

Will more than likely to get the train there and back sooo is it easier to get the train straight to Sheffield via Birmingham or to go via London?

Also where are the best pubs for away fans which are cheap, near the ground n that have SKY/ESPN as well please?

Thanks!

Fingers crossed that we will get a result up there but I have a feeling that we may get spanked again but this is Saints sooo anything can happen :)!

COYS :D!!

You will find that Sheffield has changed beyond recognition since the early 90s.

I agree, the City centre is much improved and there are some decent pubs and restraurants. Saw us win at Sheff Utd in the championship. I was referring to Hilsborough and surrounding area - would be amazed if that has changed much

Any of the Saints fans on here that live in Sheffield know how much a cab/people carrier would cost from the City centre up to Hillsborough?

Tram could be cheaper unless you're a big crowd. Yellow line to Leppings Lane.

Roughly a tenner.

*Edit - I am not a Saints fan ;)

Yeah, I know the tram is an option, just want to see about taxi options, as might be easier for us.

I don't see why you say that? Hillsborough is quite nice. There are plenty of pubs, shops and lots of greenery with the park and pond. It's just a smallish residential area. The city centre is far less attractive.

Although I haven't been for a few years, I have been to both Sheff Wed and Utd a few times and I can't ever remember thinking it bad around Hillsborough, I think some people just say any old cr ap to score points.

Southampton has got some nice areas but it's also got a lot of 'dodgier' areas and St Mary's isn't exactly the most salubrious district. As much as I love the place.

Yep, always found Hillsborough one of the better northern dumps that we have to visit.

I wasnt saying any old crap to score points thanks. I was recounting an experience from the early 90s, which resonated with others who were actually there.

And for tartanowl, I apologise if things are much better these days. But I dont agree with your dismissal of the city centre (anything to do with Utd being walking distance?) I have had a couple of very good nights out in the centre in the last couple of years

Nothing to do with United, I meant visually. The city centre is good for drinking but Hillsborough is cleaner and greener.
