We have to turn a pretty big corner to be second favourites, but I do think we'll click and set off on a run. Frees/loans would help us achieve that, we may have the strongest first team on paper but the squad needs attacking additions, especially with Lallana out longish term.

The bookies know that a season is never decided in the 1st 7 games. That's all there is to it. We could still win it, or we could still fight relegation for a while to come

cant see how we are second favourites to be honest

Because people bet on Saints at the start of the season which causes bookies to reduce odds in order to prevent losing money if that event does come true.

I wouldn't rule Saints out of winning it though. Still a long way to go. Adkins won League One with S****horpe after losing the first four games.

cant see how we are second favourites to be honest, but the league is quite weak, so a good run could see us quickly rise up the table

It really isn't weak at all. That's wishful thinking on your part, IMO.

Ourselves (Brighton), Peterborough, Plymouth and Huddersfield are all being bankrolled to a certain extent, and Sheff Wed and MK Dons have fairly strong squads on their own merit. Throw in three sides unexpectedly starting the season well (Rochdale, Carlisle and Bournemouth) and it's made for a very competitive and interesting start.

At the end of the day, every single one of expected 8 or 9 top contenders are already in the top half of the table, with the sole exceptions of Plymouth and yourselves. If I was a betting man, I'd be laying the odds on Southampton. It's not that you won't go up, just that those odds grossly overstate your chances, IMO.

Last season you had Milwall, Leeds, Swindon and Charlton all battling for 2nd spot at the end. Reckon we'll be one of those teams come the end of the season. Brighton will probably sneak in the play offs a la Huddersflid last season.

Now go back to NSC and report that Saints fans arent actually deluded thinking that we'll walk this league and be in the prem in no time as is evident in this thread.

Huddersfield didn't really sneak in anywhere.

You are third favourites on most sites now. Huddersfield seem to be the bookies choice now.

The Bookies don't choose the favourites, the punters do by the amount of money bet. They don't even make the book any more as the whole thing is calculated by a software program that responds by adjusting the odds as bets are placed.

Agreed. We have a new squad this season - missing several of last years key players, and the team has not proved it is any good at this level yet. Our odds are ridiculously short.

Just thought I'd take a look at the latest odds. We're still joint 2nd favourites for promotion according to Corals at 9/2 for the title (Huddersfield are favourites at 7/2) and 11/8 to get promoted. Have to say at just 9 points off the lead, more than double your money for promotion sounds like a decent price.

The league has not really started to open up yet and Brighton being at the top just goes to show this. By Xmas we'll be in the play-offs - I am starting to believe again. (But we will lose at Yeovil!)...
