After several years in Nigeria, my formative years were spent in Dibden Purlieu.

 

Back in those days at The Dell, as a nipper, I would just be lifted over the turnstile and all the great blokes on the benches in the stand would budge up a little to fit me in.

Then my Dad who had got fed up with commuting up to London to sell his wares before the M3 was built, moved us all to Silchester in North Hampshire which in no time enjoyed the benefits of the M3 & M4 within an easy drive, within a couple of years.

Born 1935 lived at Westrow Gdns with a garden that had a hole in the hedge straight into the County Cricket Ground, bombed out Nov30th 1940 and exiled to Plymouth for three years (bombed out there too) back to Westrow Road in 1944, 200 yds from the Dell in time for the last of the war games and then the old Second division. Now I have to come each week from Dorset/Somerset border

It is weird. In a way I would love to move back to Southampton and still have a house down there rented out, but I suppose my life has moved on. It makes it hard for home games as I only go to one a month, but have family down there still so kill two birds with one stone and they get to see my daughters too. Maybe back for the 3rd time one day!
