Time to accept that it is unlikely we will go up

In the top 2... Already we are playing catch up and playing poorly... I did mention a few weeks ago that the orient game was "must win" but got laughed at as there was so many games remaining

As CB FRY points out. The top 2 normally gather approximate 2 points a game and we would need to win around 10 on the bounce to catch up.. That simply is not going to happen

Time to stop worrying about getting to the prem is the next 3 years... Quite frankly, it's embarrassing to read whilst we are 3rd bottom of division 3

Ouch.

If anything, this thread proves even more what a great job NA has done IMO.

i think it proves a hell of a lot more than that, take note of those that agreed it was all but over and take with a pinch of salt any of their further whinges if you didnt already of course

Of course I wasn't having a laugh.

Of course.

I like the way delldays points out what CB Fry said to back up his claims. Maybe I missed the meeting when he was appointed as some sort of forum guru whose opinion should be listened to above all others.

Exactly. Some posters credibility on matters like this has received a bit of a dent, so that it why they slate this bumping of the original thread, as it makes them look a bit silly. But as you infer, like you I take their utterances with a pinch of salt anyway, largely on the basis that making predictions so early on in a season is stupid. Whether they like it or not, it is inevitable that they will be re-quoted to illustrate how wrong they can be whever they make future predictions on the basis of snap judgements.

I think alot of people were feeling a bit down early last season. Having finished strongly the season before (and won a cup final) expectations were sky high among alot of saints fans and the start of the season wasn't confirming to those expectations at all.

This season I reckon most of us had much more grounded expectations which have been blown out of the water by the amazing start we've made. With hindsight it is easy to laugh at the OP but alot of people felt the same.

The very definition of knee jerk.

Let's face it, our run of results in the second half of last season (as was Huddersfield's) was unprecedented for Saints' fans, but who's complaining?

Peterborough's was good at well. The job Saints did in getting second place was absolutely tremendous and for people to suggest that we should have known all along that we'd go up is arrogant and disrespectful of the team's achievement.

The position that we should have known all along that we'd go up, is as silly at that stage as the position that it was all over so early on. They are the polarised extremes, whereas the sensible position was that it was far too early to jump to any concrete conclusions until the season had developed further. Equally, I'm sure though that certain people on here would have rubbed the noses in it of those who had arrogantly predicted that we would walk it, if that prediction had gone pear-shaped.

Do not agree at all. Agreed we need to turn the corner but string some wins together and we will be right back in it. Did not start winning last season until October with minus 10 points and still nearly made it, and still had some very patchy form along the way.

I agree with this bloke!!! lol

well looking back at the first page of this thread (sept.2009).

These guys really put their heads on the block - didn't they?....or ...were they all using the same crystal ball?

I was interested to see what my own comments were on the post at that time, after the first page of masochistic rhetoric and self flagellation and

I finally found it on # 72.... It seems I was a little more optimisitic than many others.

It is a 10,000 metre final at the Olympic games. The runners arrive at the first corner and what's this? The World and Olympic champion and 10,000 metre World record holder is bringing up the rear of the field! Catastrophe! He's obviously ruined his chances of another Olympic Gold. His career is over, he's a has been. It's now only between the first three runners for the gold, silver and bronze, everybody else is out of it.

Of course, it couldn't be that others have gone off too quickly and might tire. It couldn't happen that there is another "Zola Budd" type incident that puts the leader out of the race.

Those who believe for one minute that we have ruined our chances of automatic promotion because we have had our usual slow start and take no account of all of the possible twists and turns of the season, are complete idiots.

For ourselves, we have players returning to strengthen our squad. We can also strengthen by loans and signings. Conversely other teams might be weakened by losing players either through them leaving or through injuries and suspensions. So we have had a poor start, but ended the last season strongly. There have been plenty of examples historically of teams seemingly running away with the title only to splutter and falter within the last half dozen games.

A bit of perspective is needed by many.

/\ /\ This. But of course, the same analogy applies to us this season going forward. We're not even halfway through the race yet.

Anyone who thinks we don't have a chance of getting automatic promotion is just mental. It's obvious to anyone that we're good enough to make it and once Adkins has sorted the squad out and insitgated his brand of football on the team we'll have no problem in finishing 2nd. In fact I predict we'll only lose one of our last 15 games and the season will culminate with us not only ending Brighton's unbeaten home record with 2 goals in the last 6 minutes but also with a final day thumping of Wallsall followed by an almighty pitch invasion.

If everyone's quoting themselves I may as well join in. How I predicted all that I'll never know.

Never claimed to be a forum guru. That's for others to say.

Being that we won nine of our last ten to secure second place, it's safe to say what I was saying was right. Pretty sure personally I never said we couldn't do it (there's one for you freaking weirdos trawling the threads of 2010) although I did say we would need to go on a phenomenal run and I also said lots of things about Adkins being under huge pressure to deliver promotion that season without fail.

I wonder if anyone is going to dredge up the horse sh it threads talking about how we should all leave Adkins alone to "build his own team" and shouldn't be all horrible to him and let him have two or three years to get promoted from League one. Or the gazillion arse-aching bores going on about how there is no such thing as instant success and only immature people believe there is and that managers can't just come in and deliver success straight away blah blah etc etc?

Come on weirdos. The forum guru demands it.

I'm not overly sure of the necessity to trawl over threads in such an "I told you so" and "look at them" manner.

Football is a pretty knee jerky business and just as some of my gushing quick match reviews may have been slightly rose tinted and wrapped up in the initial euphoria of victory, so I'm sure some of my claims of "that's it, we're fccking useless, I'm not going again, we couldn't hit a barndoor etc etc etc" are also somewhat hasty.
