Time to accept that it is unlikely we will go up

Bottom line is that making any kind of prediction, and certainly saying that 'it's time to accept' this, that or the other so early in the season is just plain silly.

Long, long way to go yet, but at least we're moving in the right direction and we should just celebrate that and let threads like this go.

Spot on Andy, how we can have threads like this in September is ridiculous. Today's win pulls us right up to 13th 2 points off the playoffs and 7 off the title... Everything to play for..

Admittedly Tranmere were shocking but Saints showed real professionalism and never, ever looked like conceding...

I reckon on this form we'll be thereabouts come December....

Anyone on this thread who was being a boring negative, moaning, saying we're unlikely to go up....

You were wrong and you're a bit silly.

HTHTHTHTH

Well we have not gone up yet have we

But now that Lambert and Lallana are fit we ever every chance

Next weeks game is going to be interesting as Huddersfield had a good win today

Could be in the play off positions very soon

would agree with Benji - to say we are unlikely to go up imho is wrong - whether we will go u...??

I still think we have a good chance of automatic

Quite scary really that this thread is less than a month old. It makes for interesting reading though, from people who have said that we have no chance to those that remain optimistic.

What it does show though is that we are all just 'guessers' at the end of the day, and even now we don't know who is right and who is wrong.

We could get promoted, we could miss out, nightmare - we could get relegated, nobody knows for sure - yet less than 4 weeks ago, people were making some pretty radical statements on here.

Without wishing to start a bar room brawl, I wonder how many contributors to this thread would now like to errr 're-assess' some of thier guesses. Don't forget though - you may have been right the first time - only seasons end will tell.

The timing of Pardew's sacking wasn't great but Adkins has put a decent run together and it helps that Lambert and Lallana are back on the score sheets and that the teams above are not winning games constantly. One problem last season was the consistancy of the leading pack. I was unsure about prmotion earlier in the season but feel more confident now, however it only takes a couple of injuries and who knows?

Saturday was better than anything we saw under Pardew IMO.

Cortese might just have got it spot on with the Adkins appointment. He knows this league better than Pardew and I think he is more motivated, he has more to prove. Still early days though, could just be new manager syndrome.

The key stat for me is that Norwich at this stage last year had only 1 more point than we do now. They ended up running away with the league, and note that it was probably a stronger league than this year.

There's a long way to go yet anything could happen. It's a funny league and similar in a way to the Championship. Everyone can beat everyone on their day. We beat Brighton who are top and they're the best team I've seen at Hillsborough this season. Yet we lost to both yourselves and Carlisle who on the day didn't look too great.

The league is very tight at the moment, we could go 2nd on Saturday (amazing considering how poor we've been recently) and all the way down to 17th if we lose at Yeovil. You can climb and fall a huge amount too. We should get a clearer picture around Christmas time for the battle for the automatics and I expect us both to be up there. You shouldn't be accepting anything yet.

But we're developing fast from the team that played you. OK, it was only Tranmere and perhaps they made us look good, but it was the best football I've seen Saints play for as long as I can remember and if you read the match thread, many say that we would have beaten any other team in this division and many in the championship if we played them like that. All of a sudden we have discovered a Brazillian player who is really adapting well to the British game having played in Italy and he was most peoples' man of the match Saturday.

It was a silly and pointless OP especially considering where we were in the season and served only to unite the negative mongers who needed any excuse to have a good old frigging moan.

In your opinion maybe. But their were lots of people who contributed to the thread and were willing to 'pin their colours to the mast' so to speak.

At the time the thread was started the comment was valid. Since then we have delivered results beyond most peoples expectations, considering we were in turmoil. The fact that we now clearly have a much better chance of promotion than when the thread started is irrelevant, and does not detract from peoples assessments at the time the thread was started. I think you will find the bookies have taken a similar view and have adjusted their odds accordingly.

The comment may still be valid, we may not achieve promotion automatically or otherwise. I just find it an interesting thread, at the time it was posted I never commented, but have since read it through. Given that it is probably less than a month old, the state of the table and the number of games / points still available I just wonder how many people would like to 'stick' or 'twist'.

The bookies will always adjust thier odds - they have too much to loose.

I think the 3 sides that went up last year are definitely stronger than those in the top positions at the moment, as you can see by how well they've done in the Championship - they look like they belong there. As we know, we had the record number of points to not get a play-off place in this division last season; there won't be as many points required this time, I'm sure. Still injuries to key players like Lallana can make a huge difference. If we have a good injury record, I still think we can be top two.

I can assure you Delldays that there is no malice intended by me in bumping this thread that you started. At the time I agreed with many of your sentiments. BUT

ISNT IT SO FANTASTIC THAT YOU WERE WRONG

The Saints are going up, the Saints are going up ......

I thought this thread went to the great server in the sky

I am so happy I am wrong....what a fantastic run of form

don't worry there were a lot more recent ones doubting! Not long ago a poster was saying achieving 2nd was insurmountable! Happy days and no need for anyone to feel bad!

It is utter madness to write off our chances in mid-september! I'm sorry, there is realistic negativity but this pure insanity. We need to get behind the team not assume they have no chance or even boycott games.

I will stick my neck out and say that we will still finish in the top two come May - which is 8 months, 40 games and 120 points away by the way.

This is not 'denial', it is more realism than some people are showing

Great shout from that man!

Dont worry. Come mid sept those moaners will be kicking off again if we make a poor start.

I always stick by the team and dont come on here giving it the biggin. The players give 100%. sometimes we win sometimes we lose.

Great day today!!!!!!!!!!!

Do not agree at all. Agreed we need to turn the corner but string some wins together and we will be right back in it. Did not start winning last season until October with minus 10 points and still nearly made it, and still had some very patchy form along the way.

I agree with myself post 58. All season I have said we will end in the top two and here we are!!

It is looking very difficult now.

We're only just in September but we can really only realistically have 4/5 more defeats all season if we want a top 2 finish.

We're going to need some never seen run of from from a Southampton side to even get close. I reckon we'll know end up sneaking the top 6, which isn't really good enough with the team we have.

I'd love to know what's happened, everything seemed to be in place before our last game against Southend. It's the stuff if nightmares!

Well that's what we certainly had..!

If anything, this thread proves even more what a great job NA has done IMO.

He turned us around so bloody quickly, probably from November onwards we were averaging 2pts per game. From our start that year you'd have never thought that was possible, so he's a genius in my eyes - and now look what he's doing with us this year. The guy is a bloody hero! He's not put a foot wrong since he's been here.

think its hard for some to appreciate quite how well we have been doing for the last 13 months - several posters kept saying it must come to an end, we aren't playing well enough to go up etc. Suppose that comes from years of disappointment.

think it was pretty clear to most that Adkins was a good appointment and promotion was fairly likely.

even in this close season I was mocked for saying we could well be above West Ham and Leicester were signing players worse than ours - think some find it hard to appreciate our team, - we have players who are better, in many positions, than Leicester, West Ham and Brighton so being above them shouldn't be a shock.

glad we didn't give up on automatic promotion to save our players for the play offs!
