Colchester build-up thread!

Same back 5 unless Martin is fit in which case he replaces seaborne. Would consider resting Oxo, not because i don't rate him but i fear playing him constantly in a losing side isn't going to help his development. He needs to be coming on for 20 mins when we're sitting pretty in games not having the pressure of having to be our best midfielder. So dickson in for Oxo, Guly for either scneiderlin or hammond. Don't care which but one of them needs dropping just to shake them up a bit. Barnard in for connolly and Lambo starts as well BUT he should be taken off if he doesn't buck his ideas up a bit (something which AP and wilkins seemed reluctant to do). Our bench is cack so i'd only name Oxo and Bart the rest can sod off!

It will be the same players that have not performed for last four games (or even scored) so what is going to have happened since Wednesday night and Saturday afternoon to suddenly make us good? Barnard coming in? He'll probably be so ****ed off with the crap players around him he'll get sent off for a rash and anger motivated challenge like last time.

If anyone is expecting a sudden change from two or three training sessions then you really do think Adkins is a miracle worker. I can't see there being an loanees and even if there were they'd have one day to fit in.

A goaless draw or a 1-0 or 2-0 win for Colchester United is looking more likely. Particularly if there's twenty or so minutes to go and Mills comes on for an attack-minded player (a pattern within the club at the moment).

If my brother goes I expect him to leave for the pub late in the second half like he did against Rochdale - oh and Puncheon will lambast one easy chance over the bar from five or six yards 'cause he seems to do that every game too.

Having reflected for a few days I think the “new manager” syndrome will kick in tomorrow and we will win – predict 2-0.

One thing Adkins can do is use some of his sports psychology expertise. He will now have had a chance to assess individual performances and what he sees as their role within the team. He will have got to know the players, their personalities and whilst it might be still too early to assess their strengths/weaknesses and their best role within the team he will have a little more information than he did on Wednesday.

I expect the team to run out in a 4-4-2 formation as follows:

Davis

Butterfield, Fonte, Martin, Harding

Chamberlain, Hammond, Schneiderlin, Puncheon

Lambert, Barnard

I personally do not rate Puncheon. He is a tricky player who works hard but when it comes to the final pass or shot he takes too long in his thinking by which time the players in space are closed down or the defender is on him. However, he is a confidence player and if Adkins can get him in the right frame of mind he might just have one of those games we all crave.

An alternative for me would be to drop Chamberlain to the bench put Puncheon on the right with Holmes, assuming fit to start on the left. How novel! Wingers playing on their strongest foot side.

Schneiderlin should be told to push forward through the midfield and get out of his comfort zone. Hammond can then concentrate on breaking up and provide front cover for the defence. Or the other way round, both can fill either role. They just need to be more positive and work harder.

On the bench will likely be Bialkowski, Seaborne to cover the centre back positions, Wotton to cover central midfield , Dickson to cover the right side, Mills to cover the left side, Chamberlain and Guly as impact players/cover up front. No place for Connolly unless Wotton is taken out of the equation (I wish) and in the event of central midfield issues Fonte comes forward into that spot.

Not easy getting the balance right! Who would be a Manager ;)

I don't agree with the same old line about having the 'best squad in the league' but this is a very good point indeed:

"There are other possible changes, Dean Hammond is certainly one candidate for a spell on the bench, I find it very ironic that Hammond is underperforming whilst a man not considered good enough for our team, Simon Gillett is starring for Doncaster in the Championship as they hit the lofty heights of fourth."

The reason some wingers play on their 'wrong side' is that some players game is about facing play and cutting in, not getting down the byline. Putting them on their 'right side' won't make them change their game in that way, just as it never did with Fernandes. He played all his best games at right wing, despite being 100% reliant on his left foot. He was awful left wing because he couldn't cut inside and that was his game.

Wouldn't mind Holmes being used though. I think he can play either wing reasonably well as he's not reliant on cutting in or solely getting down the left wing.

I miss Fabrice, I still still think if Redknapp would have played him, we would have stayed up.

Adkins goes into analogy overload....

Nigel Adkins is hoping for a glittering performance from his Saints gems against Colchester on Saturday.

The new manager is hoping that the disappointment of Wednesday evening's game brings out the best from the prize assets in his squad for his first match in charge at St. Mary's.

"We all want to get a result," he told Saints Player. "There is a phrase, that pressure makes diamonds, and I want these players to be the best jewels and diamonds that you can find.

Yes I realise the reason but is it right! Pardew was a great exponent of this way also insisting that it was trained into the youngsters. However it is not working. We need to teach players the old fashion getting down to the by line and good accurate crosses behind the defence, not in front of them so they can just head or hoof it out. Put the defence and the keeper under pressure each time a cross comes in. That is my view anyway.

Has been playing as holding midfielder wonder if his replacement will be Lloyd James? Returning player something to prove you watch James run rings around our midfield before scoring a hatrick. It's wierd I've gone from expecting us to win every game at the end of last season to expecting to see us tonked every game them season.

Hardly any teams now-a-days play with that formation and for good reason. It doesn't work as the wing backs get exposed and one of the centre backs is left with little to do, especially if at home and you are the team expected to attack.

p.s. Who is Seabourne? ;)

How about the first two verses of this sung before the game...?

  1. O God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Our shelter from the stormy blast,
    And our eternal home.

  1. Under the shadow of Thy throne
    Thy saints have dwelt secure;
    Sufficient is Thine arm alone,
    And our defence is sure.

I got all optimistic and enthusiastic before MKD but...

I think Barnard will make a huge difference today. Connolly is simply too small to play without the big front man firing properly.

The fitness issue will not have been solved in one week so expect us to struggle again in second half. Mental fatigue from the pressure will not help and we will go back to having no outlet from defence. For that reason alone, if I was Adkins I would put Bart in goal as he is able to roll the ball out and get the ball around the half-way line rather than KD hoofs up to an outnumbered tiring Lambert.

Other change would be one of Guly OR Wotton for Hammond. That depends on what Adkins saw of Morgan in training as to whether he drops into the holding role or Wotton does.

Certainly would have Dickson on the left & Punch on the right then we look to have better options on the bench, Oxy is a fine talent but again in a tiring team feel he would be better being the spark for the final 3rd of the game (assuming we're not getting tonked by then)

Jaidi looked slower & more unfit than me when I saw him, do not believe he has turned that around in a week

So tough call on CM, Guly looked to have potential with his movement if not impact against Rochdale but not having seen him since that game or in training would go

------------- Bart------------------

Butterfield--Fonte---Martin (if fit or Seabourne if not fit)---- Harding

Puncheon--Wotton---Morgan-----Dickson

------Lambert---Barnard----

Subs - KD, Jaidi (Seabourne if Martin fit), Mills, Connelly, Oxy, Guly, Holmes

I wouldnt be surprised if he put away a free kick against us.

Instead of coming out the blocks and using up all our energy in the first 20 minutes we should play a more considered game and draw out the opposition, then hit them on the break. We may also have a bit more energy left for the whole match.,

I think too many teams know that they only have to soak up the pressure in the first 20 and then hit us on the break.

if teams come to put 10 men behind the ball and frustrate you have to try and to score so they come out of their shell. It seems to me that our inablility to put the ball in the net has cost us time and again.

We have been caught on the sucker punch time and again
