dubai_phil Posted 13 September, 2010 Share Posted 13 September, 2010 Was listening to innernet radio and a couple of songs came up that reminded me of one of the great things about this weird country is how the chance to see unexpected or simply unique gigs. Example, went out to a bar 2 years ago, about 150 people in there and Howard Jones came on and played for 90 minutes in a totally unplugged set. We had no idea something was on, and they introduce him and we look and see a piano and a guitar and Howard & his mate found stuff to fill the time stunningly. The place just stopped in its tracks and (to our shame) we knew all the words and sang along. Electropop unplugged.... A mate was a promoter, he had a venue cancel a gig for Hugh Cornwell so he got him to play a set in his back garden in a villa with about 20 of us taking beer along and talking with the band while Hugh played a full Stranglers set on Acoustic Guitar. We sang a lot. Which took me back to my days at Poly (yep that old) we had 3 mystery band gigs, After The Fire, who were ok, Joe Jackson oh yes, and co-incidentally the 3rd one turned out to be - The Stranglers. Made me wonder, so many Glasto fans and so many of you lucky to have real bands playing in pubs, what was the most unexpected you have seen? (I missed Tom Jones playing in a tent for 70 people by about 10 minutes 2 years ago) Anyone else had a magical surprise musical moment?
saint lard Posted 13 September, 2010 Share Posted 13 September, 2010 (edited) When i worked in a hotel in Gosport we used to have bands playing on Sunday nights usally a band called'deaf boy hug and the hearing aids. Most wesks they had guest musicians,Nick Hugg(RIP) who formed the aforementioned band, who played a big a substantial role in Manfred mann invited people along, one week we had Joe jackson, spike Edney(longtime musican with queen when playing live)Roger taylor,Ray Cooper percussionist with Elton Johns band and Ian Duck guitarist with Elton John. It was simply phenominal, loads of blues and rock played sooo tight. Ok they are not household names, unless you are a bit of a muso, but all the same it was cool. Lord Duckhunter Posted 14 September, 2010 Share Posted 14 September, 2010 I used to play football in the 80's with a guy whose Dad owned the 100 Club in London. About 15 years ago we were in London and popped in to see the guy (as he worked for his Dad). Sat in there was a guy who looked like Jim Bowan. My mate confirmed it was him and said he came in a lot and always got up and sung if there was a jazz band on. Sure enough he got up towards the end of the night and he was a bloody brillant singer. One of the guys with us was a bit ****ed and afterwards went up to him and said "That was Super Smashing Lovely Jim". Bowan turned round and said "**** off you w*****. He was a really good singer though.

ericofarabia Posted 15 September, 2010 Share Posted 15 September, 2010 Really Unusual or Unexpected Gigs you have seen Was listening to innernet radio and a couple of songs came up that reminded me of one of the great things about this weird country is how the chance to see unexpected or simply unique gigs. Anyone else had a magical surprise musical moment? I was once in The Rock Bottom Bar and saw Jonn Burridge belt out some pretty good tunes on The Karaoke, which was quite unexpected. A bit later I saw DubaiPhil warbling along to The Buggles - Video Killed The Radio Star..... which was most certainly unique I think they awarded him the prize to stop him singing
