I'm a bit underwhelmed, but I'm going to cut the man some slack and support his position. I hope he betters Pardew's record.

There is one nagging thing I can't get out of my head though is that is the wish that Pardew was still Saints manager. Better the Devil you know, I suppose.

+1.

On the surface i can see why many people are underwhelmed, but i think people need to take a step back and assess the situation in its entirety without giving quick knee-jerked views. (Which i have been guilty of in the past few weeks, i will hold my hands up to that now)

It seems clear to me now that the Pardew sacking was not planned; i think we all assumed it was at the time and that's why there was a lot of anger and frustration vented. I think it's fair to say that Nicola was probably put in an extremely difficult situation, a situation he didn't really want to find himself in so soon after the death of such a close friend and colleague in Markus.

It seems to me that the appointment of Adkins is well thought out and a lot of time has been taken into ensuring that the right man takes this club forward, and sometimes the experienced names aren't always the best option. WGS was a ''big name'' appointment at Middlesbrough, but it's not really worked out for him for one reason or another - so appointing an experienced name doesn’t' always guarantee success.

I think Adkins has proven he's competent, intelligent and forward-thinking in his approach to management and I feel that approach could work really well here. Looking at Scvnthorpe’s squad, how he’s managed to keep them in the championship - and competitive - is a downright miracle and he's got to have something about him to have achieved that.

I'm quite excited by his appointment, he seems enthusiastic and very passionate for the job here and people say the managers thoughts often transfer to the way the team play - i hope we can see the results of this soon.

All in all, it's a good, solid appointment. Some people will see it as a gamble, but i largely don't see it in that way. All of the current ''big'' managers got their big break somewhere - let's hope this is Adkins chance as i believe he has a big future.

Could not have put it better

Great appointment at last an intelligent manager who won't talk nonsense, cause problems and have a better tactic than just hitting the ball long to Lambert.

I remember seeing S****horpe play us a few years ago and whilst we won they played the better football by far just a bit inexperienced and lightweight. Let's just hope the fans give him a chance.

I suspect that 'put it in the mixer' isn't one of his favourite expressions.

He's seriously qualified no problems on that front.

No, me too. I you had to write the dream CV of a Saints manager for now it would be - experience of promotion from third tier, experience of success higher up including premier league, experience of some knock backs and responding well to them, experience of taking over new clubs, imposing a vision and delivering success. Pardew had that CV, Adkins has a good CV but a limited one. His lack of experience of actually taking over a club eats at me a bit.

Yes Adkins has had some success, but at a club and a scenario nothing like what he is going to experience at Southampton.

I come back to Ian Holloway - brilliant at low-expectation two-bob clubs like Plymouth and QPR (as was), total failure at high expectation, high wage-bill, high-pressure Leicester. Back to two-bob clubland and bingo, success again. Some managers suit the two-bob club. Let's hope Adkins can step up.

Really, really pleased.

He first appeared on my radar when his unfancied S****horpe team played us off the pitch at St.Mary's two seasons ago. Somehow we managed to win, but I still remember walking away thinking we were very fortunate not to have our backsides kicked that day. They played with width and pace and constantly embarrassed our supposedly better side. I also remember thinking that I had never heard of any of their players. Their downfall was an inability to put the ball in the net. He should feel right at home here straight away!

Welcome Nigel. hopefully for a long and successful stay.

I remember that game well and agree with your assessment.

Its done and we need to get on with it. The announcement of Pardew's sacking could have been handled better and would have made it easier to greet the new man, but as it is, Saints fans must want him to succeed because his success will be our success. Whether he will be a great manager, no one knows, but his weaknesses will not be Pardew's weaknesses so at the very least things will change, and at the best, they will change for the better.

Welcome Nigel, time for you to work your magic.

I have to say that when Pardew was sacked there was a plan in place, have been disappointed that it's taken so much longer than I expected to sort things out, but am sure that the future's bright and it's Red & White.

Let's all get behind our new manager and show our fantastic support for our team.

COYR!!!

Welcome St.Nigel.

Very pleased this has all be concluded. We've totally lost our way and need some leadership & guidance to get us back firing again. Nigel comes across as focused, intelligent and with a track record of playing good football. I'm going to be 100% behind him.

Fingers crossed he can work a bit of magic in the loan market. Got to get ourselves some pace.

The Radio Solent fans forum can't come quick enough.

While people have highlighted his successful track record of two promotions and last year keeping the smallest club in the championship, pretty remarkable enough, one important thing has not been stressed. This is that each year he has had to sell his star players as well - Andy Keough and Billy Sharp who got the goals that promoted them 4 years ago were then immediately sold to Wolves and Sheff Utd. Then he signed Martin Paterson, who he was forced to sell to Burnley. Finally after keeping them up last year he the had to sell Hooper to Celtic - a thankless brief which makes the success incredible. Fully accept the pressures at Saints are more, but you can't question his right to get the job. Lets all get behind him - starting Wednesday

Saints structure with Les Reed and Cortese might actually help with that problem. Some managers are just very good at coaching the team and getting tactics right on the day. At many bigger clubs the get dragged into all kinds of extraneous activities they have neither the skills nor aptitude for. Keep NA focussed on the doing what he does well and he and we will do fine.

I'm quietly very happy with this appointment and hopeful that we can now progress well this season and gain promotion. I believe NA can grow with the club as we progress up the league(s). I think it may prove a very astute decision.

Perfect choice of words. After watching the game yesterday, I was hoping that we were going to see a rapid appointment. I am glad it's Nigel.

Everyone should now learn the words to 'Making Plans for Nigel' by my favourite band XTC (a band from Swindon, ironically).

It would great to hear that sung by 30,000 Saints Fans.

As Adkins likes playing fast, attacking football with two wide men I would suggest the first thing he needs to do is get a couple of wingers in on loan.

Hopefully he will be able to get the best out of Puncheon and bring Chamberlain on steadily but surely, in the mean time I think the priorities that AP never addressed are still very relevant.

2 x wingers, back up for Rickie and a decent central midfielder to replace the increasingly disappointing Hammond.

Easy really Nigel ;-)

Fully agree with this. I'm a bit disappointed, as I was one of the ones who hoped for a name, but can certainly see the case for Adkins. Will get my support as we move onwards.

I posted similar on a thread earlier and to be honest I am delighted with this appointment. Those wanting 'A Name' or so called safe option will wonder what they were thinking in a couple of years time.

When I heard Nigel Adkins was linked at first I was pretty underwhelmed but the more I have found out about him and the way he has behaved this week has impressed me greatly. Anyone who has any doubts then do yourselves a favour and purchase today’s copy of the football league paper. There are 3 articles linked to him and they all impressed me greatly. This man could really be the bright forward thinking manager I have wanted since we lost our place in the Premier League.

Good appointment in my eyes. Like the way he comes across from speaking to the media these past few days and from reading reports get's his side playing good attractive football with wingers. With 2 games coming up in the space of 5 days i am not sure we will fully see his way of playing straight away but with a good week of training i fully expect us to perform well at Sheffield Wednesday a week Saturday. Interesting what his first starting line up will be on Wednesday. Will he take advice from Wilkins? I hope not!!

Excellent appointment' date=' as I hope we'll all find out over the next 3 years. Welcome Nigel.[/quote']

Not sure if I am a doubter or a believer over this appointment. But I do hope it works out. He certainly has the potential to be a great manager. Good luck Nigel hope you can turn about this sinking ship and get us in the top two come end of the season.

Not over whelmed, not under whelmed...as the manager of Southampton you have my 100% support and I hope you have a long and happy relationship with us, god knows we need some stability and i hope you bring the best out of the finest football club in the country.

So, would it be fair to say that you are whelmed?

(Should have copywritten that damn)

I think that the key element that may actually come out of this will be the level of Intelligence that he clearly has, along with the range of training that he has gone through. The man who believes he knows everything is a fool.

I think as we (FFS hopefully) climb up the Leagues we have a man at the helm who actually DOESN'T know it, and understands that. Which means that he will look listen and learn....

And, in Alpine speak, he MAY just notice that playing the same way on a cabbage patch pitch in wind and rain as he does at SMS won't work.

I like this, I'm happily whelmed AND I think the Mods should move this eventually to Golden Threads.

From what I have seen and read he looks to have the attributes to go all the way. Hopefully

Our Physio will flatten Mourinho when we get to the CL.

(Like that one TDD)

Welcome Nigel to the club.

I hope you can do your job well and not be another Sturrock.

Take no schitt from the players and get us playing the Southampton way pretty quickly please.

Onwards and upwards.

That isn't VERY hard is it Pilchards - just make sure someone tells him not to take Bacon Sarnies into Staplewood

Have to admit I hadn't heard the name till a week ago so I was underwhelmed at first, but I can see Nicola is building a Club (not just a team) and he is breaking the mould of English football which is much needed and so a young intelligent guy with progressive ideas is a load better than all those well known names who have been knocking around club after club, having moments of glory and the sack in equal measure. Well done Nicola and keep up the radical renewal, we needed it!
