Welcome to Nigel Adkins, lets hope he fulfills his potential here and he is able to deliver the style of football that his Scunny team has been credited for.

Not my immediate choice, but a promising one.

Looking for positive omens, the last 'Nigel bloke' we appointed wasn't too bad, nor was the last manager we recruited from a Lincolnshire club (in 1974).Over to you Nigel...

"we were inundated with applications from an impressive range of managers-a far cry from the position we found ourselves in when we last appointed a new manager"

Could that be a little dig at AP,the best of a bad lot? in his opinion.

Apparently NC had to go knocking on doors to find a manager. The fact that he found one with Premiership experience you would think not.

cheers mystic meg

If you think different, probably worth saying why so rather than resulting to a half-wit quip.

We still don't know why Pardew was sacked, but I consider him a better Manager than Adkins for the aspirations that Saints have. Right now we've appointed a Manager who I feel confident will get us out of this division (maybe next season) but as for the end-game of the Premier League, I consider it a risk.

I wish him well though, obviously!

Happy with the appointment, happy it's sorted. Not excited but even though I had hoped for a really "exciting" manager, adkins seems to fit NCs vision and set up perfectly.

A very decent man (his actions and words this week confirm that) and exceedingly well qualified and a wide range of knowledge which seems to cover every aspect of football management and coaching.

I get the "underwhelmed" feeling of some......I was there....but the more I think about it and read about him the more I like him. and before someone suggests that I'm just changing my viewpoint to fit, NO, my viewpoint would never had chdnged for someone like Brown eg!!!

Three points against MK Dons and we are only 5 points behind so easily game on!!!

Just need a couple or three loanees!!

"With a sport psychology diploma, a business and finance diploma, a UEFA Pro coaching badge, a diploma in 'applied management in professional football' from Warwick Business School, and an honours degree in physiotherapy"

I'd say that makes him more ambitous and more qualified to run this team than any of the whinging ninnies on this forum.

yeah, but how many 'whinging ninnies' on this forum have been appointed manager of Southampton FC??

Im happy with this Adkins reminds me of wenger when he first came to arsenal, obviously he is not in the same league as wenger but just the way he comes across and the style of football he plays, here is hoping that he can get the players playing flowing football.

I think he is the right man for us!!

lolz appreciate the banter, I just don't understand how you can claim we can only hope for top six at the most, there are so many points to play for!

obviously if you do have a crystal ball then I retract that statement coz you may well be ITK ;)

Welcome to Saints Nigel! I'm looking forward to seeing some exciting and intelligent football and you will have done everything I hope for if we don't go to the bottom teams in the spring and lose pathetically. If you can make Saints a really competitive team without regular nose dives you will have us behind you all the way. Good luck!

Nah I don't pretend to know any different than any fan etc. - only comment on what I see. I just feel that this is 'Pardew's team', so I think it will be hard for Adkins to put a stamp on things and turn it around instantly. Not been to any of the games since Pardew left, but from reading it sounds like the players are missing something, and it has taken the wind out of their sails. Of the team that played on Saturday, I make it that 8 of them were Pardew's guys. I'll certainly agree that promotion isn't unrealistic, and it looks like plenty of teams will be dropping points this season so we won't find a Norwich / Leeds situation, but I just feel that Adkins is less of a motivator to get the most out of any group of players and more of a 'system' man who needs the players to fit his approach.

I'll be delighted if we do go up this season though!

Most people would have said the same about O'Neil when he was at Wycombe, that would have strengthened their view when he walked out of Norwich after a dispute with the Chairman.

On the surface i can see why many people are underwhelmed, but i think people need to take a step back and assess the situation in its entirety without giving quick knee-jerked views. (Which i have been guilty of in the past few weeks, i will hold my hands up to that now)

It seems clear to me now that the Pardew sacking was not planned; i think we all assumed it was at the time and that's why there was a lot of anger and frustration vented. I think it's fair to say that Nicola was probably put in an extremely difficult situation, a situation he didn't really want to find himself in so soon after the death of such a close friend and colleague in Markus.

It seems to me that the appointment of Adkins is well thought out and a lot of time has been taken into ensuring that the right man takes this club forward, and sometimes the experienced names aren't always the best option. WGS was a ''big name'' appointment at Middlesbrough, but it's not really worked out for him for one reason or another - so appointing an experienced name doesn’t' always guarantee success.

I think Adkins has proven he's competent, intelligent and forward-thinking in his approach to management and I feel that approach could work really well here. Looking at Scvnthorpe’s squad, how he’s managed to keep them in the championship - and competitive - is a downright miracle and he's got to have something about him to have achieved that.

I'm quite excited by his appointment, he seems enthusiastic and very passionate for the job here and people say the managers thoughts often transfer to the way the team play - i hope we can see the results of this soon.

All in all, it's a good, solid appointment. Some people will see it as a gamble, but i largely don't see it in that way. All of the current ''big'' managers got their big break somewhere - let's hope this is Adkins chance as i believe he has a big future.

I spoke with a mate on mine today who is a good friend of wilkins - apparently they were all texted on Monday morning about 8.00am to come to the ground for a meeting - wilkins was then called 10 mins later and was told what was going to happen but was told he was wanted to stay on - he called back about 20mins later to confirm he would stay on as he had done nothing wrong and needed the job - he was coy about the reasons but there was no major incident basically Pardew and co had been treating the staff like sh*te and NC had had enough so got rid of them all

Glad the appointment's been made but can't see him starting with a win - our match-winners are either injured, out of form or suspended and MK are due a win against us after last season. First home game on Saturday and we'll have Barney back so hopefully we can get on track then.

Square peg for a round hole IMHO, I hope I'm wrong - but he's going to be used to players who want to prove themselves, not established pros. Should be good for Ox-Cham and probably Mills, but he won't be used to having some of the egos some of our players seem to have unveiled in the past few months.

If his motivation and coaching gets them performing though, great. Top 2 is still minimum expectation for a manager with our stable, established squad and the talent they're supposed to have - let's hope he can deliver.

Still not wasting my time going to MK though...

Agree with every word you say. 14 years at one club with minimal expectation, with reputation and stature earnt over years of being part of the furniture. He's never, ever had the experience of driving into a new car park, walking into a new dressing room and saying "I'm in charge now". And he's never dealt with immense pressure on his shoulders at a club with expectation of success that he's going to face with us.

Good luck to him, but he isn't the natural choice for me. But then I wasn't convinced by Strachan at point of appointment either, so what do I know.

Good luck to him.

Fair points on the whole, we clearly just differ on our rating of NA. I reckon he's the perfect bloke to come in and steady the ship, the players are there but they need a calm, firm hand to lead the way, all IMHO of course

Very Underwhelmed I am afraid. Not convinced he is the right man for the job.

I'm a bit underwhelmed, but I'm going to cut the man some slack and support his position. I hope he betters Pardew's record.

There is one nagging thing I can't get out of my head though is that is the wish that Pardew was still Saints manager. Better the Devil you know, I suppose.

I'm absolutely positive that Pardew's sacking was not planned in advance.

I agree that it looks like a good, solid appointment but it will be interesting to see if Adkins has the ability to coach and recruit the players needed to get us to the top division.

Really, really pleased.

He first appeared on my radar when his unfancied S****horpe team played us off the pitch at St.Mary's two seasons ago. Somehow we managed to win, but I still remember walking away thinking we were very fortunate not to have our backsides kicked that day. They played with width and pace and constantly embarrassed our supposedly better side. I also remember thinking that I had never heard of any of their players. Their downfall was an inability to put the ball in the net. He should feel right at home here straight away!

Welcome Nigel. hopefully for a long and successful stay.
