I don't get this "He'll have to deal with the pressure and he's not used to it" argument.

I could make a damn good case that there's far more pressure attached to the task of punching above your weight against teams with far greater resources - week in and week out.

It'll be challenging for whoever comes here - O'Neill, Hoddle, Keegan, Adkins or even the late J. Christ of Bethlehem.

But I fancy Adkins' chances of getting far more out of this squad, and playing much more attractive football.

After the start we've had, he can hardly do any worse.

Nows thats the sort of manager I'm talking about, he'd be great for sorting out the half time refreshments too think of the savings a few rolls, some fish, some water and hey presto wine and food for the whole of SMS.

We lost 9 games last season, and so far we have lost 3! I know its early days but like I said before losing AP will be worse than the -10 points we lost last season

Absolutely. We can write off promotion already and the clocks haven't even gone back yet. So much for a **** hot season.

More than quite a big difference THE difference ! any side lacking PACE is a lesser side, from a pub team to a National side there is no substitute for Pace, at the moment we lack it big time, the window is closed just hope we can get a couple of flying machines in on loan otherwise we are going to be playing catchup all season.

This amounts to bad management. Without those two we are 50% down on players who make a real difference. It was glaringly obvious but nothing was done about it. Pardew and Cortese to blame. Without AL we are team of triers with little difference to any other team and add that to Papa and Antonio you have the sum total of a team of average underachievers!!!!!!! Wake up this is how it is........

We are clueless, disjointed and devoid of any leadership. But worst of all who we thought were good players ie Hammond,Puncheon, Harding etc are in fact rubbish and totally overrated.

Quite an over reaction. These are all good players and we should be pleased to have them in this league. Pretty obvious we are devoid of any leadership. Maybe a new manager will change this?????????????

Come on. the night always looks darkest just before the dawn. Have faith. We are Southampon f.f.s. surely you didnt believe it was all going to be easy this season.

Surely if these players we have are better than anyone else in this league,it wouldnt matter who was in charge? We should win most games?

I think we have been deluding ourselves concerning our ability.

SOS to Glenn Hoddle.

RMS Southampton FC (St. Mary). Position 22, sector League 3. Sinking fast. Immeditate assisstance required. No power available and loss of direction. We are shipping water at a steady rate. Many soles are abandoning ship whereabout of Captain- unknown. Many in denial, and few lifeboats available. Please make assisstance available as a matter of urgency.

From Mr Dalek....look for the bright shining flares from port side.

did it not used to be the case that tables werent produced until October or something?

pointless at this stage IMO but the performances ARE important

No, Bridgey. No comfort there I'm afraid. Tables used to be printed after 3 matches played. So current table does not lie. We are 2 places above where we were this time last year, 22nd instead of 24th. I suppose, on that basis, we should make 5th by the end of the season!

Utter crap. Sorry folks, there is just no way to dress this up. It is now half way through September and we are a beginning to lose touch with the top of the table. It is not credible to say that it is still early days so all is ok. All is not ok. The top of the table is starting to pull away. Not a complete lost cause yet but time is not working for us. There is no point in trying to make sh!t smell of roses. We must face reality; we are going to struggle for automatic promotion.

Agree with you '76. These are worrying times for a Saints supporter, and, although you would've been foolish to think we'd run away with this league, few, if any, would've thought we'd be looking at relegation!

Let's put the back room stuff aside for one moment, as you have, things weren't right from day one. We have laboured, we have toiled, we have passed and looked pretty, but, where is the bite, the zest, the belief? Where is the heart, the sweat, the DESIRE!

If you guys don't want to play for Saints, please, don't turn up for our new boss, as you haven't turned up this season. Let the new guy, whoever it is, select a team from players that want to be here, that want to win and that want to be a Saint!

this is starting to remind me of when burley left w.ith dodd and gorman in charge.

hope nc is on the blower now we need someone in by monday

that is exactly what I think too. here we go again.. but eventually we did get Nigel Pearson, who would be ideally suited to this league

This is going to be the big decision for the new manager. Is it a matter of motivating an essentially good squad of players and achieving promotion via the play - off's or is it a case of a total rebuild ? If the latter option then we are looking at another season in League 1, at least.

It is hard to believe how spectacularly badly this season has gone so far.

Just a few weeks ago we were hot favorites for the title, since then our billionaire owner has died, our managers been sacked, Lallana's injured and we're in the relegation zone.

Is it time to call in that old witch again?

Started to get our team performing well, before, to the astonishment of the fan base, getting the push. Why am I thinking all Chairmen are complete berks.

yes, he did get the push by the old regime, but if we had kept him - or had him now - we would not be languishing in the turd-scrape of the third division. Pearson is the ideal manager for us right now. Here's hoping Adkins will/might/could be as good as Pearson, to be so he needs to be a real Sgt. Major and bust a few balls. We have a good squad but they need whipping into shape. And we need Antonio/Papa/Similar as well. Not enough pace, not enough grit in the changing room, not enough desire. Our next boss needs to come in and spank them into shape. bare bottoms if necessary.

In fairness they did turn up against Bolton and Bristol rovers then we sacked our manager and all the progress we made in sorting out our poor start to the season dissappered in a puff of white smoke.

Not signing Waigo or Antonio over the summer, or at the very least two or three similar players is at the root of this. Add in Adam Lallana's injury, Barnards suspension, the chronically chronic shooting of Jason Puncheon and the fact Rickie Lambert ate too many pies over the summer and there's your lack of goals and consequent relegation form. Not sure who to blame for all of this, but Cortese is in charge - maybe thats why he sacked Pardew. A top new manager, a few loan signings and a bit of confidence and the play offs are a realistic target again.

There seems to be a lot of hoping, wishing and willing happening on this thread.......this says to me that a lot of people are unsure about Adkins.

You can dress it up as much as you like and you can cross your fingers bury your head and hope for the best but the truth is Adkins is a 'prospect for the future' not a finished article, ready made, seen it all before manager,he is still learning and tbh it not what we need right now.

He is a gamble,ok we all wish he succeeds because that means our team is doing well but IMO I don't think he will.

Like I said, leave that stuff aside, but, nope brought up again. Look, we didn't turn up against Plymouth or Leyton Orient either. Sometimes, as a player, you have to look at yourself. Stop putting blame on everyone else, they simply haven't done it this season, with or without Pardew, it goes deeper than that, and no, I don't mean NC, I mean DESIRE!

I agree. Real desire is missing. 'Journeyman' is a term we have not used to describe the lads since the latter half of Burley's reign. But it is looking more and more likely that we will need to dust of that title if the lack of desire persists.

This league this season has seen Norwich, Millwall & Leeds gone and have been replaced with Plymouth, P'boro and Sheff Wed - poor replacements, you only have to look at the table to see that teams like Charlton, Huddersfield & Swindon aren't the teams they were last year and yet we seemed to have messed it up already. Our squad didn't need alot of changing just maybe a back up for Rickie (which for some reason wasn't sorted out).

To be in the bottom 3, out of 2 cups, losing Lallana & Barnard and without a manager in early september is stuff nightmares are made of but I hope that the new guy comes in and sorts us out ASAP.

At this stage auto promo is out of reach but I'm happy to be proved wrong.

Best post for a long time. Sums it up perfectly. But the next question is who was responsiblr for at least some of thos problems ?

Its going to be a tough task for whoever gets the job to get this bunch motivated. At the moment a mid table finish would seem the likely result, but given where things are today it would be relatively successful. It does mean, however ,that the so called 5 year plan is under pressure!. Most would be happy with Championship football in 5 years. Sadly I fear thats unlikely!

Even the most glazed happy clappers must be losing patience with the current self inflicted debacle. I feel completely punch drunk and sick of spin at the moment whilst waiting for the next disaster or disappointment to unfold. Jesus Christ is probably an unrealistic appointment to be honest (rather outdated training methods), Keegan would have much the same effect but without the baggage, and he's available...

Garbage. Anything other than promotion would still be a monumental failure. Let's not have any of this "rebuilding" nonsense whenever the new man takes over and let's not start the spinning that "won't it be amazing if we finish mid table, oh haven't we done well".

Top four without fail this season is the requirement. Promotion either auto or through the play offs is the absolute must. If you need any clarity on that, ask Nicola Cortese.

During half-time, the group of fans I was sat amongst yesterday all got chatting and were all 'ok' for Adkins but nothing more, but all for the Keegan/Shearer dream team just for the 'Boys Own comic book' style romance of it, if nothing else!

And that's what the team needs, IMO - it's lost it's mojo at the momo.
