St.Patrik Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 S****HORPE United manager Nigel Adkins has NOT yet signed for Southampton. And the likelihood seems now that he will not be going to St Mary’s. First thing today the club put out a statement saying Adkins and his right hand man Andy Crosby had agreed terms to join Southampton after talks yesterday. It was subject to the two clubs agreeing a compensation package. But Iron chairman Steve Wharton exclusively told the Telegraph that the deal had not gone through. “The situation is that Nigel and was given an ultimatum last night by Southampton to resign and accept their offer, said Wharton. “But Nigel was not prepared to do that. He wanted to walk out of Glanford Park with his head held high and everything agreed. “I have tried to contact the Southampton chairman today but have not been able to get hold of him. “I was not prepared to roll over and let Nigel leave for nothing. “I wanted some compensation for what I felt he was worth. It was only a modest amount. “From a selfish point of view I will be happy if Nigel stays with us. “But I also feel very sorry for Nigel if this was a move that he had set his heart on. “The Southampton people have been very difficult to deal with. “They are probably not the right sort of people for Nigel to be working with. “But at the moment I am not exactly sure what the situation is until I have talked further to Nigel.”
dune Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 It's all done bar dotting the i's and crossing the t's. Don't panic.
monkadill Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 Hoooooooooooooooooray! Really surprised we were celebrating as nothing had appeared on the Official Saint web site - have we learn t nothing....
sandwichsaint Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 More excellent PR from our very own Prince of Darkness.
Greenridge Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 On the Echo now as well http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/8381139.Adkins_move_in_doubt/
St.Patrik Posted 9 September, 2010 Author Posted 9 September, 2010 This is not funny anymore - IF this is true the NC is off my christmas card list thats for sure....
saint lard Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 Is it going t1ts up already? I gave him 9 months, perhaps that was a little over optimistic. We are not covering ourselves in glory at the mo,imo. If,of course this is how it seems.
jasonb Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 One things for certain - NC won't like the fact this is now being played out in public. No wonder the Scuuny chairman can't get hold of him.
Sour Mash Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 I reckon Adkins will still be joining us, but to all those Cortese supporters out there reading that, you have to admit, it really doesn't make great reading?
Greenridge Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 I'm sure it will be confirmed that Adkins was our first choice.....funny that the one appointed is always the 'first choice'. Anyway good luck to the man. COYR
aintforever Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 Cortese really is a nasty piece of work.
saint lard Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 "If it were to be Adkins unveiled as the new manager firstly he would have to resign from S****horpe. Until we hear of such news i thiink it is more unlikely to be him." I posted this a couple of days ago,not exactly in the same context as it is meant now,but i always believed he would have to resign.
speed demon Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 This is exactly the sort of thing that NC does himself no favours with. Hes identified his target, has agreed verbally the terms, tries to force NA to resign to avoid compensation for an employed guy on a 12 month rolling contract??? Is he ****ing mad??? I always support NC and will continue to do so but he never fails to amaze at how such an intelligent, succesful individual can act like such a plank.
buctootim Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 I reckon Adkins will still be joining us, but to all those Cortese supporters out there reading that, you have to admit, it really doesn't make great reading? On the face of it - no it doesnt. Scunny are due 12 months salary for both men imo (they were on 12 month rolling contracts).

jasonb Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 Cortese really is a nasty piece of work. Or... a shrewd, single-minded businessman that refuses to pander to the traditions and antiquated conventions prevalent in English football. I'm Cortese-neutral but I agree we're going to lose more friends than we gain swimming against the tide.

I am led to believe this is not the first time he has done this whilst going through the process of installing our new manager/coach.
Frank's cousin Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 Cortese really is a nasty piece of work. .... come on, read that back to yourself and ask yourself a few of questions: 1. When has a 'manager tap up' ever gone smoothly? 2. Why should Saints not get the best possible deal - yes, in a 'nice'world we would just give Scunny loads of cash, but its surely in our interests to play hard ball and get that compensation figure down? 3. We all agree (or seem to) tha Markus was a decent, honurable man of high integrity - do you think he would hang have formed such a partnership and trust with a 'nasty piece of work' This is just playing hardball and whilst its easy to sit in our own ivory towers and judge the morals/ethics of business practice... in teh real world, thats simply how the game is played
JoeShmoe Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 dear oh dear How did this Cortese guy get where he is? Cos he seems a total and utter plank as far as I can see
alpine_saint Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 I am led to believe this is not the first time he has done this whilst going through the process of installing our new manager/coach. Dunno about manager/coach, but isnt this what he did to Elliot Ward of Coventry ?
Topcat Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 “The Southampton people have been very difficult to deal with." “They are probably not the right sort of people for Nigel to be working with." Cortese, why should we be surprised? Some on here attacked the Legend Matt Le Tiss for saying the same thing on Talk Sport.
Charlie Wayman Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 Thank goodness! For one minute it looked like we really had appointed this Johnny No-name. Ambitious club? You can be sure of one thing and you need to think very carefully about this, if Adkins is appointed it proves once and for all that he is the cheap sticking plaster Cortese needs to stop the roof leaking before he clears off in the new year. It's a simple and very obvious equation Adkins IN = Cortese OUT (and the Liebherr account) I guess you think I'm mad and a miserable sod but take heed and be warned. As always, be careful what you are wishing for right now 'cos they haven't stopped making movies about Rupert yet. " Third Time Lucky?" may be coming to a cinema near you soon, after which Cortese will have seemed like a gift from heaven.
gaz Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 WTF? Sounds like if it isn't going to be Adkins, we won't get any manager currently in a job because Cortese won't pay compensation. I'm surprised be sacked AP rather than Mutually Terminated his contract.
The9 Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 I recognise that this might just be a bargaining tactic from Wharton, but for the first time I am starting to wonder about Cortese. Welcome to the team, slowcoach.
alpine_saint Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 I am now just about as ambivalent about Saints as I have ever been. We turn everything into an episode of Fawlty Towers, whoever the personnel are.
alpine_saint Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 Welcome to the team, slowcoach. I dont think that is necessary. At least I am willing to change my mind based on evidence.
Kingsbridge Saint Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 My God, this is a complete farce. Cortese can't even sign a no mark like Adkins to replace Pardew, and there was I thinking he had a plan when he sacked Pardew. Really losing patience now. It's barking mad.
Meathead Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 I agree with you there, and I love the word plank. Clearly a very clever man but makes some odd decisions, whether they are right or not only time will tell.
up and away Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 This is exactly the sort of thing that NC does himself no favours with. When ever someone is bound by a contract, the terms have to be met by by agreement from both parties when seperating. That means they have to pay up the remainder of his contract should they sack him and he has to pay up the remainder of the contract should he leave. This is nothing to do with paying up the existing contract, that is in stone, this is about monies beyond that amount for which there is no agreement. This is just standard observance of these contracts as done by any other club. So whether you hate Cortese or not, this has nothing to do with it.
Pancake Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 So we aren't as minted as some believe. Shocker.
The9 Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 I am now just about as ambivalent about Saints as I have ever been. We turn everything into an episode of Fawlty Towers, whoever the personnel are. Yes, damn my enthusiasm for the bloke with billions of quid and his club-saving respected businessman sidekick, I was stupid enough to think things might have been different.
exit2 Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 It was subject to the two clubs agreeing a compensation package. - Surely this must be minimal and talked about already? The situation is that Nigel and was given an ultimatum last night by Southampton to resign and accept their offer, said Wharton You cant do that in football, there are procedures to go through as above But Nigel was not prepared to do that. He wanted to walk out of Glanford Park with his head held high and everything agreed Fair play to him, and how it should be done I have tried to contact the Southampton chairman today but have not been able to get hold of him WTF! Surely Cortese knows he must be talking to them I was not prepared to roll over and let Nigel leave for nothing. I wanted some compensation for what I felt he was worth. It was only a modest amount So he should But I also feel very sorry for Nigel if this was a move that he had set his heart on. The Southampton people have been very difficult to deal with. They are probably not the right sort of people for Nigel to be working with mmmmmmm someone else have a dig at the club and it seems they have a case too.
paris Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 Sounds like NC is turning out to be a nasty piece of work....(
randyapollo Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 Cortese really is a nasty piece of work. couldn`t agree more ......he leaves a nasty taste in my mouth
buctootim Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 (edited) We turn everything into an episode of Fawlty Towers, whoever the personnel are. Thats what I dont get! We change managers, owners, boards and chairmen and yet the one constant is that the team underperform and **** up the running of the club. What is it with us?? Edited 9 September, 2010 by buctootim
saint lard Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 I suppose it would be wrong of me to hope the deal falls through.
Pancake Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 When ever someone is bound by a contract, the terms have to be met by by agreement from both parties when seperating. That means they have to pay up the remainder of his contract should they sack him and he has to pay up the remainder of the contract should he leave. Say whaaaaaat? When I was contracting, I was on a 1 year contract. If I left during that time I didnt have to "pay up" the remaining months.
Pancake Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 couldn`t agree more ......he leaves a nasty taste in my mouth Thats what you get for fellatio.
The9 Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 (edited) I'm expecting Cortese's reaction to be to refuse to acknowledge the existence of Scvnthorpe, and ban all physios from the ground. Edited 9 September, 2010 by The9
Liquidshokk Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 I just cant believe how Southampton Football Club has changed. I am surprised by nothing anymore...
Weston Saint Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 Shock Horror, Cortese trying to get the best deal for the Liebherr family who hold the purse strings. Why are we not supporting our club. Why are we listening to a Chairman of another club who seems to put out statements before he knows what is going on. Even his last statement - “But at the moment I am not exactly sure what the situation is until I have talked further to Nigel.”
Doctoroncall Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 One things for certain - NC won't like the fact this is now being played out in public. No wonder the Scuuny chairman can't get hold of him. It makes you wonder why the Irons released a statement to the press this morning, doesn't it!
MarkSFC Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 Cheap shot by the S****horpe chairman doing his upmost to keep his man which is fair. And everyone believes him and flags Cortese off immediately!! I'm sure Adkins will have accepted a much improved package to what he is currently recieving in a higher league and Cortese is rightly IMO testing how much Adkins wants the job. Well done Nicola keep up the good work......
MarkSFC Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 I am now just about as ambivalent about Saints as I have ever been. We turn everything into an episode of Fawlty Towers, whoever the personnel are. To be fair here, "everyone else" has gone public. "we" haven't said anything!

georgeweahscousin Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 Why do our fans always assume we are at fault. Hardball by S****horpe in my opinion. Nothing more.
dan17 Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 I am now just about as ambivalent about Saints as I have ever been. We turn everything into an episode of Fawlty Towers, whoever the personnel are. Hahahaha - Cheers Alps, this made me laugh. More worryingly though, it rings rather true!
sussexsaint Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 Er.. we didn't poach him, he applied for the job despite having employment . Why are we suddenly the bad guys in al this?
OldNick Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 Er.. we didn't poach him, he applied for the job despite having employment . Why are we suddenly the bad guys in al this? did he apply or did we ask permission to speak to him?
