saint lard Posted 9 September, 2010 Share Posted 9 September, 2010 S****HORPE United manager Nigel Adkins has NOT yet signed for Southampton. And the likelihood seems now that he will not be going to St Mary’s. First thing today the club put out a statement saying Adkins and his right hand man Andy Crosby had agreed terms to join Southampton after talks yesterday. It was subject to the two clubs agreeing a compensation package. But Iron chairman Steve Wharton exclusively told the Telegraph that the deal had not gone through. “The situation is that Nigel and was given an ultimatum last night by Southampton to resign and accept their offer, said Wharton. “But Nigel was not prepared to do that. He wanted to walk out of Glanford Park with his head held high and everything agreed. “I have tried to contact the Southampton chairman today but have not been able to get hold of him. “I was not prepared to roll over and let Nigel leave for nothing. “I wanted some compensation for what I felt he was worth. It was only a modest amount. “From a selfish point of view I will be happy if Nigel stays with us. “But I also feel very sorry for Nigel if this was a move that he had set his heart on. “The Southampton people have been very difficult to deal with. “They are probably not the right sort of people for Nigel to be working with. “But at the moment I am not exactly sure what the situation is until I have talked further to Nigel.” Is it going t1ts up already? I gave him 9 months, perhaps that was a little over optimistic. We are not covering ourselves in glory at the mo,imo. If,of course this is how it seems. Joensuu Posted 9 September, 2010 Share Posted 9 September, 2010 Two days ago I knew little about Adkins. to me, Scünthorpe were just a small team who were lucky to be in the Championship, and who had annoyingly not swapped Gillet for Stock last Janurary. I knew nothing of Adkins or his playing style. Since his name has been rumoured I've read up on him, and have to say I've become more and more impressed. If he can replicate the team playing style and spirit that Scünthorpe I think we will all be very happy. Many wanted MON, but while he's a cracking manager, he would have been off like a shot of Old Trafford came calling. He would have commanded instant respect, and no doubt attracted some top players. He would have also consolidated resentment towards us from other teams in the league, and possibly have been less familar with the lower leagues than someone who's recently taken a team out of the third tier. Obviously the proof is in the pudding, but Adkins is as good as we could have hoped for, and IMO a lot better than a whole host of names we were linked to (Hart, Brown, Adams, Curbishley, Dowie etc). He has to hit the ground running though, as too many loses and he will be out of the door by Christmas. I'd suggest he look to the loan market asap. Oh, and this most certainly isn't the cheep option. We have a contract to buy out, making him more expensive than any of the unemployed manager (bar MON). If anything this is one of the more expensive options. All in all, well done Cortese. Adkins may either achieve of fail, but irrespective, Cortese has made a sensible decision given what we know now. Or is it Cortese playing silly buggers, if Adkins is installed IMO he will get on with the job in a quiet way and do a good job. IMO he might have a thought going round in his head that if I don't get Saints up this year will I be out of work next summer.

Red Posted 9 September, 2010 Share Posted 9 September, 2010 Some people and comments on this site leave me completely at a loss ! Unless I am living in a parallel universe, the situation as I see it, and the so called facts are: 1. AP is sacked. Very clear in the official statement as to why if people what to look for it and believe it. Simply, in my view did not get on message with the NC/Saints long term plan. Timing might be questionable, but I think something happened on the Saturday night to spark the final straw for NC (probably over transfer targets). 2. NC (and ML prior to his passing) have invested massively, not only in buying the club, but also in the infrastructure (new training facilities, youth development, new teams for youth development inc. Les Reed etc. to implement a European type of model based on Barcelona / Ajax. 3. All of this was made perfectly clear to AP, no doubt the new manager and the fans. 4. We are a league 1 club (mid table at that). 5. Despite no.4, we still attracted 30 to 50 applicants for the manager’s job – can’t be that much of a laughing stock then? 6. Media speculation (again despite what they say publically clearly do not think we are a laughing stock) and some folks on here suggest high profile names, and some fell for it ! 7. Maybe we did approach and interview high profile names but they could not accept the set up NC wants. 8. We approach a young, highly qualified, proven (at this level and one above) manager, who buys in to the plan, is ambitious and wants to grow with us – and for this he drops a division and security of probably a life time job. 9. NA has been approached by bigger clubs a few times during his career (Swansea etc. – and before anyone comments, YES Swansea are a bigger club than us at the moment). 10. We are lucky to have NA, not the other way around. Yet, people have written off NA before he is even officially announced – if I were him I would seriously reconsider on the fan reaction. We are always crying out for young English managers to be given a chance, and when we look like we might ......... BTW, since when did AP become a GOD – certainly not when he came here first / failed to get us in the play off’s last year / earlier this year / tactically during games ....... oh I know when he was sacked In which case may be NA also has a chance to become a Saints god, I hope not, and so welcome NA and good luck !!!! OldNick Posted 9 September, 2010 Share Posted 9 September, 2010 “The Southampton people have been very difficult to deal with. “They are probably not the right sort of people for Nigel to be working with.' NC I suspect may not be happy with that comment. Pretty foolish as well as we can mess them up. If NA doesn't get the job his mind will be mashed and the team/fans will know he is on the look to move. I think their chairman does not have the whip hand. Saying that Im not proud of my club if they are trying to be clever in taking away anther clubs asset without compensation. That is not how i wish to view our club
Saint Billy Posted 9 September, 2010 Share Posted 9 September, 2010 If the story is true, I admire the fact that Adkins wanted to say a final fairwell to his players and staff and not buckle under the pressure of NC. merrimd Posted 9 September, 2010 Share Posted 9 September, 2010 I always thought that if you have been given permission to speak to your manager, you will get compo, even if he then subsequently resigns. If the 2 clubs cant agree, it goes to a tribunal. Pretty sure Adkins quitting is not a way of avoiding the compensation, and NC will know that, so it all seems a bit strange! Greenridge Posted 9 September, 2010 Share Posted 9 September, 2010 I would imagine it's no more than a detailed point of negotiation in the grand scheme of things but would be better if it was not played out in public. saint1977 Posted 9 September, 2010 Share Posted 9 September, 2010 Adkins' refusal has opened the door for Phil Brown...oh joy of bloody joy! Unlikely as Phil Brown has spoken to the media two or three times already which NC won't like. I think it has opened the door for Shearer who may have just shown the same timing and opportunism that he displayed as a player. South Today reported his interest last night and it makes me wonder if it has made NC think "do I want to pay £500k for a NPC manager on a 12 month contract" - assuming that is an accurate figure. NC perhaps expected NA to make his decision for him by doing a Paul Lambert but Adkins seems loyal and perhaps this coupled with the comments of his opposite number in Lincolnshire has changed his mind. I wouldn't be surprised if Keegan acts as an ad hoc football consultant between Shearer and Les Reed as Keegan and Reed go back years. Keegan and Shearer are both media savvy as well and might help NC clear up his media difficulties.
