oh yes it is!

We are the ones poaching their staff so if we need to cough up a bit more cash then we just have to do it. We need a manager in place ASAP because 3 points on Wednesday is vital.

Agreed with that.

3 points on Wednesday will paint an entirely different picture, we'd move up to 12th/13th with a win i believe - only 3 points outside the top 6, and then with the next game at home against one of the teams in the top 8. It's entirley possible that we could find ourselves right back in the picture after the next two games, or if this hasn't been sorted out it's conceivable we could be 12 points behind.

We need this sorted by tomorrow at the latest.

If Adkins is still sticking to his "Principals", then, though I admire that quality, I'm afraid he is only deluding himself

Football does not have any principals in this day and age

The only thing his "Principlals" stance has done, is give his Chairman (Wharton) mor amunition in terms of the asking price

The best thing Adkins could do is WISE UP to the real world

His statement telling clubs to sort it out today was an implied warning to Scunny chairman imo. Adkins will know what is being offered and what is being demanded. I'm sure if Saints come close to what Adkins sees as reasonable then he will resign

All this is well and good but what if the shoe was on the other foot? ie Replace Wharton with Saints chairman. Saints want something that Scunny have but want to get it for less than the advertised (perhaps the figure written into his contract?) price. All guess work. If the stumbling block is Adkins principles, I can't help but admire his principles. Still, I am rather old fashioned with my views.

NC has really screwed this up. Pardew out for this bloke in? Madness.

NC I'm afraid to say is the one who needs to be sacked and Pardew reinstated. My patience after yesterdays result is now finished.

NC OUT.

I think your frustration at the lack of progress is clouding your judgment. Let's just wait a few more days and see what happens.

Does anyone know WHAT IS GOING ON ! This is just nuts. This ship is about to ground on the rocks and no one seems to want to call a lifeboat. Where is the bloody captain and what the hell is he doing? It seems to me he has locked himself in his cabin and is crying in the corner. Sort yourself out Cortese, you're falling well below the high standards you set everyone else!!!!!!!!!

My understanding is that most Managers who have resigned in this situation have done so because their club have not allowed them to speak to another club.I dont think there's been many instances where they been allowed to speak, have agreed personal terms, but have then resigned over the compo. The compo is pretty stright forward, it's either written into the contract or is what's left on the Managers contract. I honesty believe either a deals been done and not announced yet, NC's got cold feet, or is awaiting a reply from someone else. . I can not believe we are argueing over compo for a low paid manager with less than a year left on his contract.

There were reports of an offer being withdrawn the other day. What was that all about?

Could NC have offered NA an extra incentive to quit Scvnthorpe, and NA wanted his club to benefit from compo so refused?

I dunno, I'm sure it'll be sorted soon. Sometimes, I wish there was no internet!

I do not think that he will resign because he said he would not. I do believe that the Scunny chairman will cut his demands, it then will depend on Cortese upping his offer. We are probably talking about a £100,000 gap at present. But there is only 10 hours left to Monday, Adkins deadline.

This is pretty promising:

I am posting this on behalf of Le God The Legend who is currently in departures at Soton airport on his way to Dublin.

"I have just seen Adkins walking through Southampton airport."

Fingers crossed it is all sorted by tomorrow evening...

I should just add, Adkins wasn't in departures when my brother saw him!

If anyone's interested, this is quite an interesting read from his early days at scunny -

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-486008/Why-Adkins-knows-stuff-S****horpe.html

On the surface, promoting the physio to take over the manager's job is one of those curious football experiments doomed to failure.

Think again. Few men are better equipped to be leading their clubs than Nigel Adkins. A sponge for knowledge, the list of tasks he has performed is outnumbered only by courses studied and qualifications gained.

His latest role is that of miracle worker, guiding tiny S****horpe United to eighth place in the Championship.

Today, the 42-year-old pits his wits against another of the free thinkers of the modern game, Aidy Boothroyd, when S****horpe host leaders Watford at Glanford Park.

He will not suffer by comparison when it comes to innovation, motivation or likeability.

A former goalkeeper who led Bangor City to successive League of Wales triumphs a decade ago, he was part of the management team under previous boss Brian Laws and his talents were fully recognised within a club more used to life in the bottom division of the Football League.

S****horpe are in dreamland, with Adkins the sorcerer who keeps conjuring up fresh magic.

He said: "It's a voyage of discovery for the club. A lot of the supporters have said: 'It doesn't matter where we finish, it's going to be a great year'. Our goal is to stay in the Championship. If we do that, for S****horpe United, it's like winning the European Cup.

"Financially, you look at our budget compared to every other budget in the Championship and we are nowhere near them. End of story. On paper we should be in League Two."

Adkins can talk with authority on the subject. On just about every subject, in fact. As a trainee at Tranmere, he took day release and studied sports business studies. He followed that up with business and finance at night school.

When injuries took their toll on him as a player ? the worst was a double fracture of the spine ? he embarked on a four-year chartered physiotherapy course in his spare time.

Add to his resume a full UEFA A coaching badge, a sports psychology diploma from Newcastle University and his current place on the League Managers' Association course in Football Management.

All of it is put to use. He said: "Knowledge is valuable. Everything is relevant to somebody. It's all about finding a trigger to get the best out of that individual.

"As a physio, your door is always open. Players aren't injured but come to you and say: 'I've got nowhere else to go'. I've had to deal with the drug problems, the drinking problems, the gambling problems, the women problems.

"Or: 'The supporters are absolutely slaughtering me. I just need to be out of the fishbowl where I'm getting bombarded, so I've got a groin strain'. He hasn't got a groin strain. It's just a cry for help to get him out of the environment. I realised I was more like a social worker, a counsellor."

Prior to the season, Adkins cut a video, interspersing clips from the film Gladiator with action shots of his team to reinforce the message that anything is possible if they stick together and believe in each other.

Then there were the plans he devised for this week's trips to Colchester and Norwich.

"Because of the surroundings at Colchester, with a small ground like ours, we made sure we had the home kit on and played as if it was a home game.

"At Norwich, with 23,000 people there, we said: ?Let's treat it like a European game. Let's quieten the crowd. Keep the ball, keep the hostility down, don't give them a chance to get their voices up'."

However unusual his personal journey, Adkins and S****horpe have discovered they are perfect travelling companions.

This is getting a bit stupid now. Adkins has made it clear he wants his position resolved this weekend. He hints as best he can that he wants to come here. "It's a fantastic opportunity and opportunities only come around so many times in your life. "I'd like to think I've stuck by my principles. But there is still an opportunity for Nigel Adkins to become Southampton's manager."

The situation seems to be compensation. We have made an offer which has been rejected, as has their counter offer.

Cortese has bought this to a head by allegedly turning to Eddie Howe and offering him the job. Unfortunately/Fortunately (take your pick) he declined. Cortese must be strong.

IF Adkins wants the job so bad he needs to review his principles. He says he will not let his former employers be out of pocket but if they cannot agree compensation then resign and let a tribunal set the compensation. That is what it is for, to make sure all is fair.

Cortese may see all this as a lack of hunger and commitment for the job. These are important attributes.

Hopefully it will be resolved today. If not Cortese must move on and make an an offer to others he may have on his radar. The first team is rudderless, in need of total overall of tactics, ideas and to some extent personnel. The loan window opens soon. Negotiations will be underway now. We need a first team Manager to make those picks.

Couldn't agree more, Ron, the problem with these kind of principles is that they put you entirely in somebody else's hands. His club has had ample opportunity to negotiate compensation, and Adkins needs to decide, probably by the end of today, whether he is coming or not. If not Saints should move on for two reasons: Because Adkins decision making ability will start to look questionable, and secondly because there is, as we've expected for some time, a rather large re-building job to be done here.

If we hear nothing at/by 1159 or at 0800 tomorrow would think the deal off and NC should look elsewhere

Meaning that Wilkins will probably be in charge for the MK Dons game and Colchester game which will mean another two defeats and yet another season of disappointment.

It'll be hard to find a manager if Cortese doesn't sort the Adkins deal out as any manager will know that he is a 3rd choice...

Adkins seems to have a strong loyality which is very strong and rare these days. I think Adkins wants to do things the right way for Scunny, which I think is far enough, but if they cannot sort out the amount we need to pay them then let the football league do so.

I think there is more to this than meets the eye and others are in the frame for the job.

Yes but did he have a Costa Coffee?

Before you have a go at me for my last comment I need to point out that I LOVE Costa Coffe and if you look at my other posts then you will see this. Just never knew there was a Costa coffee at the airport until a week ago and now it has been mentioned about 20 times.

On a serious note this does need resolving and perhaps we will hear something today if it is true that he is in town, but you have to see the other side of this and the amount of people that have been spotted at the airport over the last week, and at the moment I find it hard to believe anything I read on here, but that is half the fun. If you do not keep it light hearted in here sometimes you will go completely crazy!

I think we can all agree that we need a manager in place asap, and it seems that Adkins is the best choice, even if he would not be my choice.

Cortese could be waiting for Strachan to become available

If this forum is any reflection of the over all Southampton fan base we do not deserve success. There were many that actually thought M.O.N. was a real possability. Very arrogant. Some of the abuse and unfounded negative comments about Cortese is bordering on pathetic and actually quite offensive. I know the point of a forum is to comment but too many of the comments are simply ridiculous.

Dont get me wrong, we have enough to be concerned about but is it not possible to get some perspective. I bet if we won the next three games the same people will be saying we will win the league by a mile.

I for one think we will be in the top 6 by the end of the season and Cortese will be better equipped next season, because i am sure he will have learned a lot of lessons over the past few months.

Our squad has not become as poor as our results have shown and although i do not think we will immediately start winning every game it is not all doom and gloom. We do have one of the best squads in the division, fact and maybe time will prove me wrong, but i do have faith in Cortese to get it right in the long run.

You are very confused.

You cannot have "one of the best" as there is only one 'best', but if you mean it is a fact that we have one of the better squads in the division you cannot be proved wrong if, as you say, it is a FACT.

What is a fact is that at the start of the season we were favourites to win the division and therefore 6th place will be failure, and will be down, in my view, to sacking the manager without a plan B in place at the time. If the squad is as good as you say it would be achieving better results than it is since there are no points awarded in this division for style or execution.

I also believe your faith in NC is misguided. He has been here 14 months or so - what makes you think he is going to learn what is required in the next 10? Even if he does, he will be behind his own schedule. He has a lot to learn and at the moment he does not appear to be learning quickly enough. Far from having a plan he seems to be making it up as he goes along and that worries me.

Sorry to be pendantic, but you can if "best" is a generic term to describe a group of things with similar attributes.

Example: "He f*&ked the three sexiest girls at the party". You wouldn't say "He f*&ked three of the sexier girls at the party". Well, you might, but you could say the first.

The thing I dont understand, is why caretaker managers come at Saints they never deliver! The Villa manager is doing well, Chris Hughton done well at Newcastle. Maybe Cortese, thought get rid of Pardew and give Wilkins a few games! As he has not delivered know Cortese has to find someone. We just need a little bit of luck. Still think we will be fine and get promoted, maybe not 1st but defo 2nd. Charlton won their first 6 and didnt get promoted, at least we have won one! Better then last season!

But surely all 24 squads in League 1 have similar attributes and the best, by definition, will be the one that finishes at the top? The team that finishes second will be second best.

And your view on the other points I made?

My opinion:

If the above is true, then Adkins will be announced as manager tomorrow and take training tomorrow. Either compensation has been agreed or he's resigned. It benefits neither club to be in limbo so I suggest the former.

Making an announcement today serves no purpose (other than to cool the keyboards of some of the numpties on here).

I for one will give him 100% support. I suspect some on here will struggle with that, but that's football.
