oh yes it is!

No wonder fans think we are very arrogant. A manager drops a division and some are gutted

I think some have unrealistic expectations, but at the same time he would have been better a year ago before we signed a load of players of the sort he's never managed.

His early impressions are going to count for a lot - and I bet Mills gets a game.

Shame about Meola falling through :D

Good luck to Nigel and Andy and I hope this works out. I admire what he has done at that-club-the-swear-filter-doesn't-like but this is a big gamble by NC and Adkins will need a string of wins straight away if we to have any hope of automatic promotion. In Adkins' situation, I wouldn't have taken this job. Let's see if he can get us out of a hole. My concern is that Lallana, Fonte and others will be off in January feeling a lack of ambition.

Let's put this into perspective.

A year ago, when the takeover had just been completed, we'd have been delighted if we'd appointed Nigel Adkins, having just led Scunny to their second promotion out of this division in three years. The season we were alongside them in the Championship (07/08 ), they were unlucky to only take one point from the two games against us, and they played decent passing football.

It's only because we made such a high-profile appointment in Alan Pardew, and that Pardew proved to be popular with the fans before his sacking for reasons that will probably remain unknown, that many are feeling underwhelmed at this appointment.

Attracting a manager in a secure job at a club in the division above us can only be seen as a positive, IMO.

Personally, I'd have preferred to have kept Pardew, but that's not been possible for whatever reason. Adkins is as good a replacement as any, he's just not attracted anywhere near as much media attention because of the low profile of the club he joins us from.

That's the spirit....

Christ, imagine if it had been Keegan...9 months would be long term. Adkins is a loyal guy, it's taken him a long time to leave and he doesn't seem the sort to move around regularly. If he does a good job he could be here a long time IMO. You think MON would have been long term, really? Or the self publicising Brown? Off the second they got a better job offer. Or it could have been the high profile Sven! Take some big money for a few months then **** off. Brilliant. Where the hell has high profile got us in recent years? Burley was relatively high profile for the CCC, but awful. Only Hoddle did alright, and what happened there...yes he quickly ****ed off.

But is Cortese? The scunny chairman and fans alike were probably overwhelmed by the success he had given them and quite rightly,he did well for them(besides one relegation).

But here is a completely different ball game, expectations are ten fold compared to his last job.

I suspect scunny are exceedingly happy being a championship side occasionally flirting with relegation,us however?

I still regard this as a short term appointment, but good luck to him.

Of course fans should get behind the new manager. The circumstances that have brought him here are not of his making. He is less of a Wow, than Pardew was last year and fans will be worried about showing ingratitude to Pardew if they applaud Adkins appointment too loudly but he will win the fans round if he delivers. Supporters will cheer loudly enough if Adkins gets the team performing again and if he can strengthen the squad, assuming Cortese supports him with the money and Reed does not act as a block.

It would help if there was honesty from the club over why Pardew and the other two were sacked, because it is the uncertainty and speculation over that which has got in the way of welcoming a new manager. Mind you, we have had plenty of practice at welcoming new managers.

Excellent appointment who is certainly well qualified to get us promoted this season.

For those who are slightly underwhelmed or concerned how he will be with the "big names we have here for league 1" and the "high expectation of supporters" just look at Leeds and Newcastle as an example. Neither set of supporters would have been excited when Grayson and Hughton were appointed and expectations at both those clubs are at least equal to ours. They both now find themselves in the top 8 of a higher division than they were in when their current managers were appointed. I will be surprised if the same cannot be said about us in 12 months time.

Welcome, Nigel, and good luck.

Well said. I, for one, am perfectly satisfied.....and relieved it is not Tangerine Man.

Radio Humberside guy on Solent says NA can be a bit happy clappy but is a genuinely nice guy and revered in Scunny for what he has done. Two promotions to the CCC and a Wembley final in JPT were simply beyond their wildest expectations. The reporter said Scunny a smallish town and NA would know he couldn't keep pulling rabbits out of hats. Gates about 5000 and not really a fanatical football town, so it was only a matter of time before NA moved on to a club with greater potential (even if a league below). Reporter ended by saying "be nice to him, you've got a good one there".

Certainly NA is intelligent and well qualified. He has a degree in Business and Finance for example, now that must surely have impressed NC (they could swop investment tips perhaps)! Also a qualified physio and has the requisite EUFA badges and attended some sort of football management school.

All this is impressive, but his most telling qualification is a diploma in Sports Phsychology which indicates he will be able to handle the greater egos, not only of the players but critically perhaps of the boardroom as well.

Simple fact is the good folk of Sc**thorpe think we're damn lucky to have him, and they should know...

Possibly quite right, but taking us forward from there? I wonder if his capabilities will allow him to take us even further?

Well O'Neil would of left in 2012 anyway when Capello left ;-)

I wanted Mowbray...and am concerned as to whether he will get the respect of the players like Fonte but time will tell.

Its only results that will gauge whether this is the right appointment.

Remembering the home game against them when they played us off the park I am clinging to that.

Rather Adkins than the circus of managers that go from club to club like Hart, Dowie, Megson etc.

It's the sort of appointment a Swiss banker would make.

I don't necessarily mean that to sound too derogatorial.

It was a decision made with logic and without heart set against a wider, more limiting agenda.

Welcome Nigel and I hope you're able to get us passing our way out of this division.

Good luck.

I am very happy with the appointment. Adkins ticks all the boxes for me. I know he is not the "wow" factor that many wanted but this is all about a Manager who has a proven record at this level, will grow in the job as we move up the leagues and shows the signs of having the ability to Manage at the highest level.

His previous team plays flowing football, using the whole pitch and I fully expect to see the "Southampton" style we all crave for.

Well done to Cortese.

i agree a very underrated manager but i have always been impressed by the football his S****horpe team and the way the players respond to him.

i think he will a great manager for the saints .

Prof... Please don't make out pardew was a WOW appointment last year... So many were underwhelmed.. Thanks to his immediate past with charlton.. That is a fact...
I wasn't saying that Pardew was a 'Wow!" but that as an ex-Prem manager he had more about him when his appointment was announced last summer, than Nigel Adkins has now. That is no reflection on Adkins, but it doesn't meet the implications of the club saying we would all understand why Cortese had made the change when we saw the new name.

Think this could turn out to be an inspired appointment. An ambitious manager who is supposedly an excellent man manager whose teams play entertaining, flowing football. Best of luck NA!

Also, as a trained physio, he might also spot that Lambert is obviously carrying an injury and will hopefully bring in someone on loan to allow him to recover...!

Bit insulting to the club's medical and physio staff to imply that they are incapable of recognising an injury and need the manager to point it out to them.

Good post this and has made me re-think my initial feelings on this. The players can help Nigel out by doing their job and getting the three points that they should be taking if they can be bothered at Swindon on Saturday. A win would give us all such a boost and give Nigel real forward momentum. In fact, I would say Swindon is our biggest game in the club's recent history - win and then win the game in hand and we are right back on track for automatic promotion. Lose and we are on the verge of being out of it. If the players can't show some effort and application for a new manager, it might be time to use the 5 loans up and for Nigel to get rid of a few that couldn't do it consistently for Pardew either. I'm sure the first thing Nigel will spot is the chronic absence of pace and that one or two players (Puncheon and Jaidi esp) are carrying a few too many pounds.

Hope the man does well. He will have my full support even though he was nowhere near the top of the list for me.

I'd like to think all Saints fans (whatever your reaction is to his appointment) will get behind our man and help him get the team winning again.

Welcome to Saints Nigel.

I am a little under-whelmed by this appointment, but I will get behind NA as I did AP & hope that he does just as good a job for us as he did for Scun-thorpe. I guess that we will never really know what went on with AP & I find it telling that the LMA have been absolutely silent over this, they normally come out in support of there managers. So we may well have been forced iinto this decision, so I for 1 Hope NC has the right man to take us forward.

Absolutely agree with this. Lets face it he wont be an unknown if he gets us back this year and starts a charge in the CCC. Im sure we will then be sat here moaning that other clubs are sniffing around him.
