Appy Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 14 years, joined them in 1996. Thanks, just had a round guess, but knew he had a been there a long time.
Webby Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 But thats the thing, he doesn't, yes he goes to away games faily often, but he has been working for that club for the best part of a decade. Oooh, a decade! I take it all back. Seriously though, if he and his family are not prepared to up sticks and move down here to what would quite possibly be the job of his life, then he can stay there as far as I'm concerned. Would you go for a job in Rochdale and then tell yer missus about it afterwards? No, you'd discuss it, weigh up the pros and cons and make an informed decision about whether to go for it. Wouldn't you? Maybe it's just me. It's not like there's another Southampton FC down the road from scunny is it?

What a topsy-turvy day though, gone from definetly on, maybe off, definetly off and back to likely to be on again. Crazy.
Rebel Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 I'm starting to think we should walk away from this one. Surely if Adkins was convinced by the Saints job it would be a done deal by now. I don't think his heart is in it - his head might be but his heart isn't - that's rests with Scunny by the looks of it. If he really wants the Saints job he would resign from Scunny.

Theo did the very same when leaving for arsenal. No one saw a problem with that
Appy Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 If he resigns, do scunny get no compo? They do not.
Ken Tone Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 They do not. Here we go again. Keep up! If you read the other 347 pages on this, you'll see that they would get compensation, via a tribunal. But presumably not as much as SAcunny hope to negotiate. Plus it would be a risk for Saints , if Scunny have any chance of showing that we acted in any way improperly in our approach.
Thedelldays Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 The way I get it is.... NC offered Adkins and co the job. Adkins wants the job. The scunny chairman is trying a last min ploy to hang in to his prize asset after Adkins stated he wants his former club rewarded... Adkins goes back ooop north, pleads with the scunny chairman to let him go....and tomorrow he will probably join YET this is all the fault of nasty nick cortese... Laugh a minute on here
surrey1saint Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 JUst said on SSN offer been withdrawn.
Saint Fan CaM Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 BBC Humberside just reported that it's still likely to happen. Negotiating compo. Wharton said it was a small amount, so I expect it will still go through which is a shame, as now it looks like NA and his Chairman are bit desperate for a change.

smithy Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 Reading these posts it shows a real cross section of the entire community. So many people believe whatever crap they are fed from the media and it shows how the media drive peoples opinons. It's a little worrying to be honest.
saint lard Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 I did'nt want him in the first place, this just makes me not want him more. Either sign or don't. Walk away Cortese.he obviously is'nt that keen. Looks like he got his way of saying his final goodbyes to his players, before joining us. Should've been training in Southampton not Scunny this morning if he really wanted the best for SFC. All imo.
smithy Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 An opinion based on rumour and nonsense. What makes you really think he isn't keen? He's spoken of his interest for a week, came down for an interview despite being very comfortable in his job at a club he's enjoyed for 14 years, and decided he'd happily step down a league to manage us. He wants the job and I have no reason to believe he ever doubted that. It's very odd that people go on about loyalty and want a long term manager, then a manager who has been loyal for many years to a club, and seems to be a guy with a bit of integrity comes along, and we slag him off instantly. You're not disloyal for leaving after 14 years, same way MLT wouldn't have been disloyal to leave eventually after many years of loyalty. Adkins is a very good manager and I'm surprised so many have turned out to be so stereotypically celebrity obsessed wanting their big name homo-erotic WOW factor. Bang on! Adkins is the man for this job.
the saint in winchester Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 I did'nt want him in the first place, this just makes me not want him more. Either sign or don't. Should've been training in Southampton not Scunny this morning if he really wanted the best for SFC. All imo. He's not my first choice either. But I don't see that Adkins has played a single card wrong in this. He is keen to join us, but wants to ensure Scunny get the right level of compensation. This morning, it did appear that NC was at fault, but as the day has progressed with the OS statement, it has now emerged that the Scunny chairman was speaking out of turn by declaring the deal was off. I revoke my earlier comments and now accept I was hasty in my criticism, but point out it was based on the only statements in the public domain at that time. Adkins seems a good bloke, trying to do the right thing for Scunny and for us. We have had 'nice blokes' before and it hasn't worked out. Let's hope he can lead us to the Promised Land. I'm sure there will be confirmation of his appointment tonight or tomorrow.
saint lard Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 He's probably much keener now because he has burnt his bridges at Scunny. Could'nt give a toss about any Supposed WOW factor, just don't think he is the man for the long term future of SFC. Prove me wrong and i will be elated.
surrey1saint Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 He said in his interview he wants to sleep on it so nothing will be sorted until tomorrow morning.
IanH Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 In the meantime Eddie Howe has turned it down: http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/saints/news/8382844.Howe_turns_down_Saints/?ref=rss
Ken Tone Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 Confused now....is he or isn't he? No. I reckon you've pretty much got it taped with that masterly summary of the situation.
Ken Tone Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 In the meantime Eddie Howe has turned it down: http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/saints/news/8382844.Howe_turns_down_Saints/?ref=rss Cue lots of other managers quickly saying they too turned it down, in mass face-saving exercise. Even Phil Brown, after publicly crawling for the job, will find some way of saying he turned it down.
Bourno Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 SSN just said that Saints have told them that they are talking about compensation. A bit surprised as I though that Saints no longer leaked any news.
buctootim Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 audio of Adkins press conference here: http://www.thisiss****horpe.co.uk/news/AUDIO/article-2626693-detail/article.html
Saint Charlie Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 Adkins comes across very well in his interview. Shows so much enthusiasm for Saints, makes a change.
Dalek2003 Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 What I cant understand is when Hoddle did exactly the same to us we were all up in arms now when the boot is on the other foot its different, make your minds up. Exactly.
Bourno Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 Did Eddie really turn the job down? was it really ever offered to him?
gaz Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 Taking about Adkins on BBC Radio Humberside now, they are going with the story that Saints gave NA the ultimatum to quit. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/bbc_radio_humberside
Junction 9 Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 John Toshack is coming, you heard it here on this post first.
Saint Garrett Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 John Toshack is coming, you heard it here on this post first. Source ?!
Saint Charlie Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 100% a fan of Adkins after that interview. He also deserves a chance at a bigger club.
BTW Saint Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 So in summary current situation. If Southampton want Atkins they have to agree compensation. Atkins is being honerable and wants compensation for S****horpe, not to resign and leave compenastion until later. He wanted to say goodbye to S****horpe and not be forced to take training in Soton this morning. That would against his principles. Soton and S****horpe continue to talk terms for compensation. I agree with Atkins stance.

Seems like people above the M25 don't pay much attention. edit - actually most of the callers are clueless.
cryoman1965 Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 Listening to the Audio interview on this is sc u n thorpe seems he will be on the way here as soon as compo is agreed. Seemed to apologise for his chairman spouting of to the media and acting unprofessional.
Junction 9 Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 Oldies? That's bizarre given our recent youth successes. Even now our best player came through the academy, we have a 16, or maybe 17 year old in and around the team, a local young centre back, joe mills still pushing for a place, a france u21 international, and a lot of very good prospects at youth levels. guess anger gets in the way of facts. I don't think you'll find Puncheon ever went through our Academy.
Joesaint Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 I don't think you'll find Puncheon ever went through our Academy. Think he ment Chamberlin, and he should be starting.
CWD Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 Think he ment Chamberlin, and he should be starting. I think he meant Lallana actually
Joey-deacons-left-nut Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 And we pinched him from Bournemouths Academy...
huggleman Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 Lallana came through the Saints ranks I thought, just went on loan to Bournemouth
itchen Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 There's a poll on the Grauniad website about whether thiswould be a good move for Adkins. It's slightly in favour of "yes" at the moment. http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/football-league-blog/poll/2010/sep/09/southampton-nigel-adkins-poll
jamesfp1 Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 He said "on the back of that" far too much in that press conference.
