Echo says Adkins on brink of Saints job 2.30pm

sometimes we seem to forget - we are a Third Division club. If we've convinced Adkins to come here, that's a result for us. He WILL get us out of this division. We were never in a million years getting O'Neill, and why would Shearer be a better prospect than Adkins? Adkins has been there and done it, Shearer would be cutting his teeth if he joined us. Let's give the guy our support.

solent at 0750 - no announcement following the talks that were going on late last night with Adkins which may suggest further talks today (didn't say whether they meant with him or a.n. other)

Solent 9.00am news say breaking news... Scunny chairman says NA and his assistamt Malcolm Crosby have accepted offer from NC and will leave Scunny today. Compo still to be agreed.

I think Adkins will be a terrific manager for us, if we get him. I don't care that he's not a household name.

The man's record and reputation are just what we need.

Southampton FC have, however, yet again been a total embarrassment with regard to media relations.

How, please explain. My understanding is that nothing is fact until released by the OS, most of what was shown yesterday, was pure media speculation (not like they have an axe to grind with us?), along with quotes from two chairpersons, neither of which was NC. So where did your idea that we are an embarrassment come from. I'd say the media in this country deserves to wear that particular crown!

Im with the general consensus that we need a new wide player or two.

But I think there are width options even within the current squad....a few thoughts:

1. Dickson left-wing hugging the touchline

2. Mills left-wing...same gig

3. Holmes left-wing....same gig

4. Puncheon as left winger, not on the right wing cutting inside

5. Lallana on the right wing, not on the left wing cutting inside

6. Oscar Gobern? Or have we loaned him out?

am not saying any of these options are great, just that they do offer some width options.

As you say, the options are not great. I don't think Mills or Dickson have got the necessary speed. I understand what you're saying about Lallana and Puncheon and while this appears to be our best options (other than Alex O-C), I'm not convinced they've shown the speed and skill to do the job (although I concede that they might have been following Managers instructions to cut inside to match other competencies?).

My opinion on our general play is that we take the ball out the wings TOO MUCH - we're SO predictable. There is not enough variability in our play and in particular there are very few driving runs through the centre of the opposition penalty area. We play out to the wings and then always cut back in, with the result being that we take 10 more passes than necessary to get into a position to score (or the ball has been lost on the way). We need to get to the byline to cross OR start making more direct central runs into the box - scare the big immobile CB's in this league into making some mistakes.

  • 7 months later...
He has the main bulk of the squad for promotion (so long as he wins them round), with a bit better motivation and tactical astuteness than AP I am sure he can get the rest of the performance, but a couple of loans it would be nailed on.

It is so, so, so important he connects with the team.

Good luck to the man, I say.

What if NC is more inclined to dip into the transfer market with a manager he can trust now ? Might make all the difference.

just looking at the start of this old one, two posts which think some it up - both from Alps.

three key positives for Nigel

1) Motivation / confidence - interview the other day from Rickie - he said players were convinced by manager that they were going up, kept squad happy etc

2) probably best in game manager since Hoddle

3) good relationship with Cortese vital

Great appointment. Very highly respected. Prefer him to a 'big' name.

The people who are saying that he isn't what we need clearly know **** all, and are probably saying this as Wikipedia doesn't have as many lines on him as it does the bigger names.

Just cos you hadn't heard of him prior to 3 weeks ago doesn't make him **** / unsuitable for the job.

I'm a ****ing genius.

I've just reread the thread and I'm glad I stuck to slagging off Cortese for his pre-season and early season "mistakes", and didn't criticise the actual appointment of Adkins.

The closest I came to being critical is that I'm a little concerned about what Nige will bring if we get to the Prem, but won't worry about that til we get there, and if he's got us there I probably won't care anyway.

Of course underpinning Alpine's point was that with Adkins, Cortese would splash the cash to get us up, which he didn't... but anyway, I'm still too busy enjoying going up to get into all this, wouldn't want people to think I'm not loving it ! :)

Makes promotion an even more of an accomplishment for Adkins then to see the cash wasn't splashed!

A competition should be done to see who can find the funniest most disparaging remarks about Adkins so we can all laugh about it!

I think Charlie Wayman has already won that honour... in another thread somewhere.

If Adkins gets us to the Prem then I expect he'll have a squad of players who are playing for him as he surely will have earned kudos for steering us up two divisions. I get the feeling that he has the tactical knowledge to do well, providing he has the players to work with.

My admiration for Nigel has grown all season. In his first game (MK Dons) the team was basically the same as now, but they were dispirited, disorganised and looked hopeless.

He has instilled a winning mentality, real team spirit, the ability to grind out results when we play badly and to impress with great football when it's going well. His use of the squad over the April fixture congestion was brilliant. I would say that we have 17/18 players who would call themselves 1st team regulars and being able to slot in replacements without any loss of quality has been vital. Add to that his management of the psychology of the game and we've got a fantastic asset who has been absolutely key in getting us promotion.

Thank you Nigel, and well done Nicola for getting the right man.
