tobes8 Posted 8 September, 2010 Posted 8 September, 2010 why wouldnt it.....most of these players have worked for people that are less than no one..and succeeded.. ffs, we really have a deluded set of fans around...MoN...players wont like adkins.. ffs, most of our players have been playing in league fuking 1 for most of their careers..not at man u or liverpool Not deluded been watching saints for close on 30 years, just my gut reaction. Really hope i am proved wrong and will get totally behind the team.
DT Posted 8 September, 2010 Posted 8 September, 2010 It is sad that Saints fans are moaning about Adkins! If he does get the job I hope you all say sorry when were top of the league! i pwomise
SO16_Saint Posted 8 September, 2010 Posted 8 September, 2010 I always felt that he opened his mouth far too early when he talked about how he wanted the job, I wonder if he blabbed because he knew he wasn't going to get the job, just using the oppotunity to promote himself. Not very well.... Ex prem manager fails to get a div 3 job
Dibden Purlieu Saint Posted 8 September, 2010 Posted 8 September, 2010 Turkish - we have the money and the infrastructure and a four year plan. If I'm a prem. league manager and get offered that prem. league salary and backing to take a L1 club to the Prem in four years then I'd snap your hand off. Why wouldn't you? I'm assuming that the club doesn't have to disclose how much the manager is being paid? If the price is right ... Why the **** would we offer a Premier League salary????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? You guys are mental, we are meant to self sufficient, yet your talking about paying £3m a year for a Manager.
Tractor_Saint Posted 8 September, 2010 Posted 8 September, 2010 I think we should have a poll on what level of manager people think we deserve. Then we can divide the forum into groups. Those who blatantly know **** all about football and thus can go on ignore, and then those that realise that we are a League 1 club that won't attract the best Managers in Europe. I'm going to back whomever is the new manager (apart from Redknapp). Very open minded about who's appointed and given the hype I'm hoping they are going to be at a similar par to AP or better so am looking forward to the rest of the season (but please, NC, get on with the announcement so we can stop 90% of the posts on #SWF now and I can get back to my day job)
Chez Posted 8 September, 2010 Posted 8 September, 2010 If adkins becomes our Manager I will be amazed if we get promoted..i predict a long season ahead. This appointment does nothing for me, nor the players I would imagine.I suggest you stop imagining things.
Saints Pedro Posted 8 September, 2010 Posted 8 September, 2010 Am I the only one who would prefer Nigel [got a ****e team promoted] Adkins to Martin [still thinks Heskey is a Premier League player] o'Neil? Before you slaughter me remember that MoN doesn't coach and Adkins does!

A salary of £3M for a prem manager to deliver your business plan in 4 years time is small fry with the money we have behind us and what revenue it'll earn (think of the photographic rights). I think you need to read 'the boy who cried wolf'
shurlock Posted 8 September, 2010 Posted 8 September, 2010 Exactly, look at our managers in the PL and CCC, yet in L1 we think we are going to get one of the best in Britain! There are precedents. When FUlham and Man City were in L1, they both attracted Prem League Managers - Keegan (who had just come from Newcastle and then went from Fulham to England) in Fulham's case (Ray WIlkins also dropped down) and Joe Royle (who had come from a relatively successful spell at Everton which had seen them win the FA Cup).

Get Adkins in ASAP in time to save our season.

Saint_Si Posted 8 September, 2010 Posted 8 September, 2010 Meh. Cant say I'm overly impressed with this, although I have a sneaky feeling he might do well. Its a similar feeling to when we appointed Pearson I think. Has the potential to do a great job to be fair, and I'd be confident he can take us out of this league at least. Seems like an intelligent man. However its a MASSIVE gamble. Taking S****horpe up twice is admittedly a fine achievement, but managing Saints and meeting Saints supporters expectations is a different matter entirely. Not to mention the pressure from NC and the boardroom to get results straight away. He never had that at any of his previous clubs and was always regarded as the underdog. He'll have my support from the off, just hope he doesnt get too much critisism winging his way if things dont click immediately.
Tractor_Saint Posted 8 September, 2010 Posted 8 September, 2010 you're contradicting yourself now. Think you'll find I'm not, I didn't come up with a £3m per year salary, DPS did. This came about from TDD saying that MoN wouldn't come here because we were a L1 club. I'm talking about getting a manager in who'll take us to the premier league and I don't care if we have to pay Prem League salaries as long as the person has the passion to get us there. If you pay peanuts you know what you'll get but on the other hand you have to make sure the person you get really *wants* the same outcome as the owner does. Or do you think you can't have passion and be rewarded for it?

I think you are over-estimating thee money that is earmarked to be spent on us, and what football managers and players use to motivate them. For instance, if we can afford that to spend on a Manager, why didn't we try and bring in Premiership quality footballers, for instance Thierry Henry. Obviously he'd be interested cos we could afford him. Or David Villa. Or Kaka. Or Messi. We obviously have so much money available to us ANYONE would be lucky to join us.

View From The Top Posted 8 September, 2010 Posted 8 September, 2010 Good God. How deluded are a section of our fan base. We are an average sized English club in the 3rd tier of English football and people, genuinely, believe that MON or another manager of that stature would come and manage us. Freaks.
Chez Posted 8 September, 2010 Posted 8 September, 2010 That's the going rate for a top class Premier League Manager.Didn't McLeish look for a £250,000 rise to £1m and get told where to go?
S-Clarke Posted 8 September, 2010 Posted 8 September, 2010 I can see both sides of the argument here. Let me start with the positive side - Adkins is a good manager, he's kept a relatively small and low cost scunny side in the championship - but not only that, they're also competing in the championship. They've had to sell their best player this summer in Gary Hooper but he's still managed to set them up with a good solid start. He plays attacking, pacey football with width. That is something Pardew lacked for me, we were very effective under Pardew playing a certain style (hit it to lambo…) - prepare for much more Width under Adkins and a lot more football on the deck. I see this appointment similar to that of Grayson when he went to Leeds, the similarities are startling - and he hasn't done too badly there at all as he? A few iffy periods but he got them promoted during the time frame he was given. On the other side of the argument - he's not that massive experienced name i think we were all hoping for, someone that will bring all the fans together and put bums back on seats. I'm sensing a real divide opening within the fan base and appointing a somewhat unproven manager isn't going to help that - especially when he is replacing someone who, on paper, has much more experience and a much higher reputation (pull for players) within the game. I thought that Cortese would personally go for an experienced name rather than somewhat of a gamble, as this is an appointment he really cannot afford to get wrong. But he'll get my support, no matter what. I just hope he gets off to a fast start as i fear he's the kind of appointment which could see fans getting on his back quite early on.
Tractor_Saint Posted 8 September, 2010 Posted 8 September, 2010 You are because you are saying we should pay this that and the other, PL wages etc then say we dont want a manager just here for the cash. Why else would they drop down two divisions when they could manager straight away where they ultimately and everyone else wants to be? OK - to put this into easy understandable language - A £12M outlay over four years to get us to the premier league by appointing a top manager is small fry compared to the income associated with being in the top flight. MoN isn't in the prem league (to my knowledge at the moment) so may be attracted to take on a new challenge (the original discussion) But, again, it's not about the money, we're after someone with the passion to take us there and money isn't an inhibitor.
Tractor_Saint Posted 8 September, 2010 Posted 8 September, 2010 my point being that it doesn't look like we have Premiership money to spend full stop so your argument is weak. Thanking you. Where have you heard that then? Would be interested if you've got the accounts for SFC for last year to hand to prove that? Along with the business plan for the next x years. It may not look like we have prem money to spend but then again, a couple of years ago it looked like Poopey had the prem money ..
Dibden Purlieu Saint Posted 8 September, 2010 Posted 8 September, 2010 Didn't McLeish look for a £250,000 rise to £1m and get told where to go? Yes, but I would also put O'Neill as a far more elite Manager. Potential future Man United and England Manager...

beatlesaint Posted 8 September, 2010 Posted 8 September, 2010 I just hope he gets off to a fast start as i fear he's the kind of appointment which could see fans getting on his back quite early on. And the main reason for that is the ambition NC and ML have put into the club. All the bigged up talk of automatic promotion has given fans a feeling of expectancy. If Adkins is seen as an underwhelming choice, well I can see that, he may well be brilliant, only time will tell if he is the choice. But really NC has raised the level of expectancy and then left us scratching our heads in dis-belief at a less than inspired looking appointment. You cannot blame people really.
Chez Posted 8 September, 2010 Posted 8 September, 2010 (edited) Yes, but I would also put O'Neill as a far more elite Manager. Potential future Man United and England Manager... sorry you said top class not elite class. Yeah £3m seems about right for elite. Either way nwe haven't got those sort of funds. If we had we wouldn't be ****ing around with online ticket taxes. Edited 8 September, 2010 by Chez
Dark Munster Posted 8 September, 2010 Posted 8 September, 2010 I reckon the OS is going to keep us waiting like they did for the new shirt. Tomorrow there will be an article entitled "The manager is coming" and then another next week entitled "just a little longer to wait"

Tractor_Saint Posted 8 September, 2010 Posted 8 September, 2010 likewise where is your evidence that we do have £12m to spend on a manager over the next 4 years? I'm the optimist. Sorry if you and Turkish see the negative in everything but I suppose you're allowed your opinion no matter how wrong that may be...
St_Tel49 Posted 8 September, 2010 Posted 8 September, 2010 The Paul Lambert thing is a bit unfair. Yes, Lambert was largely unproven as a manager, but as a player he played at the very highest level. Adkins has the stigma of only being a physio before his current managerial position and is also largely unknown as a player. Adkins is a good appointment for this level of football. However, there are a lot of unanswered questions about how he will fare higher up, and with bigger name players. And given Cortese's statement about "managerial stability" it raises questions about Adkins' suitability here in the Championship and/or the Premier League, if we get that far. Morrhinio was only a bloody translator which seems even less of a qualification.
NickG Posted 8 September, 2010 Posted 8 September, 2010 not all ex-top players managing at top of prem
Saint Fan CaM Posted 8 September, 2010 Posted 8 September, 2010 He plays attacking, pacey football with width. That is something Pardew lacked for me, we were very effective under Pardew playing a certain style (hit it to lambo…) - prepare for much more Width under Adkins and a lot more football on the deck. OK - so in terms of the "much more width" thing, who do you think in the current squad will be able to deliver that for Adkins? Lallana - a bit injured and not really a winger as such. Alex O-C - best possibility maybe. Puncheon - can he reach the byline or indeed find another Saints player? Holmes - not fast enough now and cannot get into 1st team. Running out of options now....
1976_Child Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 Adkins? Never heard of him. Would rather gamble on Morph: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSMRPKM1evk

Holmes - not fast enough now and cannot get into 1st team. Running out of options now.... Im with the general consensus that we need a new wide player or two. But I think there are width options even within the current squad....a few thoughts: 1. Dickson left-wing hugging the touchline 2. Mills left-wing...same gig 3. Holmes left-wing....same gig 4. Puncheon as left winger, not on the right wing cutting inside 5. Lallana on the right wing, not on the left wing cutting inside 6. Oscar Gobern? Or have we loaned him out? am not saying any of these options are great, just that they do offer some width options.
Big John Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 I think that The Echo may have been 'played'. And I also think that The Sun may have a decision to make if it is someone with the genuine WOW factor. Kevin Keegan will be like high noon, he fits with all the clues to me and NC would love it, he'd reallly love it. Also a nod to Lawrie Mac for his genius in bringing him here the first time. Be a nice touch to announce it at the Potter's Heron too imo.
SO16_Saint Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 Wave just said Fabio is quitting England.... That would be a wow appointment!

SO16_Saint Posted 9 September, 2010 Posted 9 September, 2010 Hoddle to talk on SSN shortly on a 'possible return (double use of return???) to management'
