Echo says Adkins on brink of Saints job 2.30pm

your very wrong!

bums on seats means better atmosphere at st marys, more income which means better players more feel good factor which means better team and club spirit... that would carry the club along way... but still your not interested in filling the ground so lets keep 14-18 thousand empty seats a game

Wins up the attendance. I'd rather have consistently higher gates than just for a manager's first game.

If this turns out to be true, I’m sure Adkins, is a top bloke and a good manager and before I continue, should add he has my complete support, but without a ball being kicked, I truly believe this is a bad hire and ultimately doomed.

To all but a handful, this is Pardew’s squad and from the better players he convinced to stay, through to the higher league players he enticed down and league one hot shots he convinced we were the best option, they all have something in common; They were sold a vision (Quotes from Lallana, Fonte, Pardew, Lambert etc.) that they bought into, success was on the way and they were going to be a part of that.

I think that whatever happened with the Pardew , there was always going to be fall out (As it does with every club, in the same situation) and it doesn’t matter anymore the rights and wrongs of his sacking, but to minimize the impact, the new boss did have to have a “Wow” factor or certainly have a persona of success, that would go some way to reinstate the vision and drive of the club.

Sadly Adkins doesn’t bring that with him and whilst they are supposed to be professional and get paid huge amounts of money, any backlash from Pardews exit or diminished views the players have towards our ambition are unlikely to be quelled and will be reflected in results.

For all his faults, Cortese has been consistent in one thing – The people who he has bought in around the team, are (On paper anyway) top people in the industry and probably the most expensive. This is the first hire since Markus’s death and whilst it wouldn’t be at all unusual that the family haven’t yet decided the levels of funding (If indeed any) it feels very much like the “Cheap” option and not in keeping with his previous track record.

Now whilst that might all be conjecture, I can’t help feeling disappointed and the process of resetting my expectations, to a self sufficient League One club, as opposed to sequential promotions back to the top flight and World domination, is becoming more of a reality…. Tempered of course with the fact that at least we are still here.

Good luck Nigel.

This is how I feel too - good post. However, I might point out that this is the Echo we're talking about - since when did they get any exclusive about incoming staff at SMS in the last few months? I find myself hoping that this is a mistake and Cortese is appointing someone who has seen more success than the mighty pinnacle of managing to just escape relegation from the nPC.

He'll get my full support. OK, he's not the glamourous name some hoped but he's definitely a sensible choice. I just hope people don't start sharpening their knives the minute his appointment's announced.

More to the point how long will he get NCs support for? and how long will the St Mary's faithful give him. I hope he gets some wins under his belt early becuase ST Mary's isn't as a forgiving place this season as it was last season.

Tbh, people's assessment of Keegan is hopelessly unfair and in most cases bears no relation to the facts. A while back I looked at his record. I can't remember exactly but it was roughly...

In the year he finished second to Manchester United, Keegan's team conceded only something like 4 goals more and the following year concededed LESS goals than United (or vice versa)... Either way he had one of the skinniest defences in the league.

People remember one game, against Liverpool and imagine he played a formation of 1-1-9 - he didn't. He was a bloody astute manager, who has one of the best post-war records in terms of win ratio and everything he did well seems to have been forgotten amid his two failures - England and most recently at Toon.

Well, if you can find me a successful England manager, I'll show you Alf Ramsey. And as for the debacle at St James's... I think we know where the blame there lies.

I don't want Keegan through some misplaced hero worship. I want him because his record with wealthy clubs in the lower divisions working for dictators is astounding.

Adkins isn't a 'down grade' it's a side step in my humble opinion. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt but I won't be over-whelmed.

Personally I give him less time than Pardew, I think he'll be back out of here by the end of the season...should he become manager of course.

By the way, the Echo is now also reporting that odd on MON have been slashed from 33-1 to 5-1

Do tell us what those reasons were, i like everyone else would love to know your facts on this.

I have been told by over TEN people, that Pardew's sacking was "non football related"

Of those Ten, two are definitely associated with the Club

OK, the word "fact" was/is too strong, but I am convinced that the reason for sacking WAS non football related

ONE person saying it = rumour/conjecture

TEN different people saying it = plausible

I still say that Cortese would NOT have sacked a Manager WITHOUT having a Replacement lined up

Some of you were going to give Pards to the end of September or October...

Some even gave him to November or December...

Out of curiosity how long will you same peeps give Nigel after his settling in period....

His mentor Sir Less should already have an handle on it ...so suggest Nige up and running very soon..

Hope so.....Otherwise we will be in for another hard slog..

Onwards and upwards with King Nics army...

Blimey MON now

We need a manager with a bit of fire in his belly who can transmit that to the squad.

I for one would prefer a young manager filled with ambition rather than someone who has peaked in his career.

A bit of self belief instilled in the squad plus a small amount of arse kicking is required

IIRC Jackanory works for The Times and knows people on The Suns sports desk?

Don't work for The (Sunday) Times any more but needless to say I have the odd source on the Sun Sports Desk and NC was at News Int' yesterday for a long time (was quoted 3 hrs), had a meeting with the Sports Editor that ended with NC being shown round the newsroom given demos on how the paper gets created etc.

He told me Adkins is nailed on so I presume this was mentioned in NC's meeting. Personally not jumping with joy at the news but he's highly thought of and all good young managers need a chance before they can be a successful experienced manager - MON made his name at Wycombe then Leicester remember?

Some people need to get a grip. Our first priority is to get out of this league and we are talking about someone who has done just that twice in the last 4 years. You seem to have decided to dismiss that and talk about him norrowingly escaping relegation from the npc....which is still a great achievement considering the size of scunny. It's also worth noting that Nigel Pearson is held with such high regard on this site and for what?.....narrowly escaping relegation from the npc

Who are a league above us. Of course us taking Stockports manager was fine when we were in the Prem.

True enough, but thats the point. If we were in the prem taking a Championship manager then it would be because they earned a chance to step up. Sitting where we are, aiming for the dizzy heights of Scunny doesnt sound all that. Accepting we are a L1 club and taking a Championship manager sounds alot better. Just doesnt sound like its something our club is used to aiming for.

Still adjusting to life in the lower league I guess???

How anyone can say he is not a step down from Pardew is beyond me. Pardew could get any championship job he wanted, maybe even a few premier league jobs.

Adkins seems like a top guy and will have my support regardless but he has got 1 team promoted and the same team relegated only a couple of seasons ago. His win ratio at S****horpe is less then Pardews was here.

As alluded to in another thread to me this will seem like a cheap option, a lot better managers in the championship that we could of prised away if we were determined to spend the money on getting them.

I can see players like Lallana now going in the next transfer window.

Why did anyone want the loser that is Kevin Keegan? Seriously? Did OK at Fulham with a ****load of money, but many years ago and only failure since. Can't handle pressure, terrible long term option and don't start pretending he really gives a toss about saints.

Spot on. Some of the pro Keegan posts on here have been embarassing. He has also been out of management for a while and his heart wouldn't appear to in it anymore. As soon as the going got tough he is likely to bugger off anyway (judging from his past history). Laughable that the fact he has got promotion with filthy-rich at the time Fulham and then Man City was seen to give him some sort of hero status.

I'll admit what he did in his early managerial career with newcastle was pretty special, but since then he hasn't done much to get excited about, and appears a complete loose canon when things begin to get difficult.

NC doesnt strike me as the kind of chap to go asking for a bit of love and compasion from anyone though. Build up a relationship with top brass maybe but not the ass kisser type IMO.

The rags are the type to invite someone like NC into there offices and be all nice as pie then completly slate them in the papers the next day so I dont hold much hope in NC's visit doing too much good.

Will wait and see.

This all fits with what I feel was the essence of the "5 year plan".

SFC is a family club which ML and NC wanted to build into a self financing one. To do this the whole club/teams need to run on the same lines and continuity is needed. This comes from all the backroom staff as well as the manager.

I'm assuming that NC thinks we need a manager who will buy into this concept and will stay for several years building the club up. A young manager who is qualified on the coaching and physio sides will be an added bonus.

I don't necessarily want a big name signing - I want someone who is hungry for success and can see the potential in our fantastic club. If NC has identified Adkins as that man after sifting through mountains of applications then I will give him all my support. Players can't leave until January anyway and I'm sure they'll be professional enough to give it their all until then and then see how the land lies. We're only a few games into a very long season.

I hope the fella does well and gets the team firing - certainly not under-whelmed - 100% support from me. He must feel confident coming to us and perhaps the relationship with all concerned will be better having been thought-out and discussed re: the ethos and structure we are implementing.

Perusing the Scunny forum he is well "thought of" so bodes well. I genuinely hope he is a success - it's in his interests as well as ours - he's said himself he is extremely ambitious.

he may well get us out of league one .But he is not what we need right now. we need some one with WOW factor, someone who will put bums on seats, lift the clubs profile and attract big names.. that said if it is Adkins then i will get behind him as we all should

I would say a manager who has experience of getting a team out of league one is exactly what we need right now !

Gaining promotion to championship will then increase clubs profile and attract bigger name players.

So do you not think Adkins has earned the right to "step up" ?(if you could even call it that considering he is coming down a league) It may also be just my experience of being a saints supporter but since when have we been used to anything different?

Its a weird one IMO as Saints FC are known as one of the bigger clubs due to the history of being in the top flight for so long so on that basis going from Scunny to Saints is a step up.

But right now we are a league below them having just sacked an ex Prem manager at a really odd time and have an issue with just about anyone that dare question our chairman. Does that really look like a club thats a step up from a prety stable Championship club?

IMO a step up from that level would be a team challenging for promotion to the prem or a lower half prem team looking to stay in the prem. Dropping down to L1 is normally left to someone that has something to prove or wants a challenge.

Adkins has proved he can get promotion from L1 and proved he can keep a club in the Championship. His next challenge would normally be to go for promotion to the prem or above.

We could well be that 1 step backwards leads to 2 big steps forwards but after seeing Pards cut adrift is our club the place for an upcomming manager to take these steps?

I said before that I hope (if we really have got him) he turns out to be another Pearson and does better than expected. Im sure he will get full support from everyone and the better he does the more the support will gain.

Good luck to him if he is coming and I hope he will understand the questioning that the club will no doubt get.

So this means there will be a discrete climbdown over the photographers ban with perhaps a little something extra in terms of publicity for Saints as a sweetener to enable Cortese to portray the move not as a u-turn.

Why is Cortese the problem ? If the stories I have heard (from 2 different independant sources..i know sorry!) then Cortese was left with no option but to get rid.

Because firstly there's nothing to verify "what you've heard" and all the various stories and rumours we've seen on the lengthy rumour thread ALL have massive logic holes in them.

Secondly because if the reasonably informed opinion of a bunch of people who have worked for him, and certain people who've had to deal with him is true, he's "difficult" at best. Which I accept is also just "what I've heard" in comparison. And then there's the photography thing, which just smacks of bad idea.

Thirdly because I've seen his dubiously motivated "business decisions" in action for 6 months already, and the only one I think is good for the club so far is the bloody kit design.

can anyone tell me why adkins would be a better appointment than phil brown footballing reasons please?

browns feat of being the only manager to get hull to the premier league and keeping them there looks more good than adkins yoyoing between league one and the championship plus brown looks like hed kick ass more than adkins and would get more respect

i dont want either by the way but prefer brown out the 2

And some people need to find some perspective. So what you're advocating is that if Adkins gets us out of this league, but then either relegates us back to L1 or leaves us close to relegation (per Scunny), THAT will be a sign of success?!?! And then if (as per Scunny) he does not improve our position, NC will need to sack him and get another Manager to get us out of the nPC, THAT will be a sign of success?! Ad infinitum.

Nigel Pearson was in a completely different position - he came (from the Prem) into a weakened, poorly functioning team at the foot of the CCC and he turned things around IN LESS THAN ONE SEASON! We were desperate - out of money. He was our Adkins at that time - he has gone on to prove himself to be capable at another club also in nPC, so you could say he has achieved greater heights than Adkins.

Look - Adkins has done a great job at Scunny in the FOUR years he's been there - I applaude him wholeheartedly - but that's not Saints - we are a totally different proposition. The squad - the supporters - the CEO's vision and plan to get to the Prem in a short space of time.

Based on past experiences it's got failure written all over it - I desperately hope not - but that's how I feel right now and I guess only time will tell.

This is the first time i've seen NA and even from the short clip you can tell he's a good laugh and has a good bond with his players. I'd be happy with him as our next manager.

Or...even someone like you who hated pardew from day one can see replacing him with adkins on football managment merit is craziness.

As I said, believe what you will

I did not "hate" Pardew from day one. I got disallusioned with him over a period of time, and for me, going for the JPT as opposed to the League underlined it, and, incidently, did not go down too well with Markus and Nicola

I assume you do not believe that the ten people that I referred to actually exist ??

By the same token, if ten people said you were a great guy, I should disregard those too ??

It's all relative

As regards Adkins, he HAS proved hid worth in this Division, having achieved TWO promotions

A logical appointment (if made) IMHO
