Echo says Adkins on brink of Saints job 2.30pm

Not the signing that proves NC knows what he is doing IMO. Was expecting something bigger to be pulled out of the hat. But agree with some on here that he may be the right man for the job now and the future will wait and see.

Might turn out to be like Pearson in that he turns out better than most expect.

Shows how far we have fallen though when its a coup to take a manager from Scunithorpe!

Goes with what I heard yesterday - deal wasnt done as Cortese was at a certain national tabloid's offices for 3 hours trying to convince their Sports Editor to be nice to us!

And that is a story more far fetched than most of the papers own headlines !

A tabloid sports editor spending 3 hours of his time ( on an international day with the Rooney story running) with a 3rd tier club !

mental some people !

Does look like it's going to be Adkins. Bit surprised, as I thought Cortese would go for someone from abroad and a bit more interesting/exciting, but Adkins seems a good, bright, enthusiastic, young coach, with a proven record of getting teams promoted out of this division. I don't think he is an improvement on Pardew, but the fans need to get behind him from the off, absolutely pointless being negative from the start.

Who'da thunk I would agree with you on somit. ;)

Why would he trust a stranger more than some random bloke from Scunny?!

Better the devil you know

That makes a lot of sense, he is though our thirteenth manager though (correct me if I am wrong please) I just hope he does not sign at 13.13 hours, at least it is not the thirteenth.

We could have ended up with someone like Keegan who would be pretty clueless in a division like this but would have brought a 'wow' factor to some extent. I'm not interested in bums on seats for a manager, i'm interested in someone who can win us games and win us promotion out of this crap division - that will bring the fans back.

Do you not realise Keegan has won promotion from this league with Fulham?

Thoroughly underwhelmed if this is the case.

A simple question of "are we better off with Terry Nutkins than we were with Pardew?" leaves me saying "absolutely not", every time.

This is clearly the type of appoitment to appease Lou Reed and the development centre side of affairs; whether that will be to the detriment of the first team, time will tell.

As a cheque book manager with a team he bought that was much better than everyone else... which does match our situation, and is also about the only way I'd want to see him here, tbh. Quitter, defensively naive, etc. It's not 1982 any more, not even 1996.

IIRC Jackanory works for The Times and knows people on The Suns sports desk?

If this turns out to be true, I’m sure Adkins, is a top bloke and a good manager and before I continue, should add he has my complete support, but without a ball being kicked, I truly believe this is a bad hire and ultimately doomed.

To all but a handful, this is Pardew’s squad and from the better players he convinced to stay, through to the higher league players he enticed down and league one hot shots he convinced we were the best option, they all have something in common; They were sold a vision (Quotes from Lallana, Fonte, Pardew, Lambert etc.) that they bought into, success was on the way and they were going to be a part of that.

I think that whatever happened with the Pardew , there was always going to be fall out (As it does with every club, in the same situation) and it doesn’t matter anymore the rights and wrongs of his sacking, but to minimize the impact, the new boss did have to have a “Wow” factor or certainly have a persona of success, that would go some way to reinstate the vision and drive of the club.

Sadly Adkins doesn’t bring that with him and whilst they are supposed to be professional and get paid huge amounts of money, any backlash from Pardews exit or diminished views the players have towards our ambition are unlikely to be quelled and will be reflected in results.

For all his faults, Cortese has been consistent in one thing – The people who he has bought in around the team, are (On paper anyway) top people in the industry and probably the most expensive. This is the first hire since Markus’s death and whilst it wouldn’t be at all unusual that the family haven’t yet decided the levels of funding (If indeed any) it feels very much like the “Cheap” option and not in keeping with his previous track record.

Now whilst that might all be conjecture, I can’t help feeling disappointed and the process of resetting my expectations, to a self sufficient League One club, as opposed to sequential promotions back to the top flight and World domination, is becoming more of a reality…. Tempered of course with the fact that at least we are still here.

Good luck Nigel.

Im willing to give him a chance. I didnt know much about Pardew when he came in tbh and I soon took to him. I think some people are just looking for that "celebrity" name over whether he could actually do a good job for us.

Anywho.... nothings certain yet. Its just an echo statement...

Why do people keep asking the question if he's any better than Pardew ??? You cant compare - Pardew was obviously sacked for non football reasons so the question is irrelevant.

The question is very relevant.

Which is why Cortese is the problem. In all of this, no-one has yet said "but what if he just falls out with the next bloke too?".

The more I read abou him the more I think he'll do a good job and hopefully stay for a while. In retrospect I would much rather have continuity that a big name who is here for only a few months until a better offer came in.

Much better than Hart or Sven

All of that, well put.

Plus Cortese being a megalomaniacal mentalist.

Whether he's better than AP remains to be seen.

Got to give the guy a chance. Just hope that he's allowed to get on with the job without too much interference from Messrs Cortese and Reed.

Wonder if he's been told that, if we're not promoted then he'll be sacked?

When Strachan arrived he had not exactly been fantastic at his previous clubs and did well at Saints.......I think Adkins should be given every opportunity and see how things go.......wish him well

I agree with what you say

I also would have agreed if you were talking about Adkins

The Keegan who got Fulham promoted from the third tier of English football?

Cortese isn't going anywhere until HE chooses to.

Get used to it.

That's not his point though. I think everyone is aware that Cortese will only go when he chooses to.

Why is Cortese the problem ? If the stories I have heard (from 2 different independant sources..i know sorry!) then Cortese was left with no option but to get rid.

He was. A fact that many on here seem to ignore

In passing, Ancellotti of Chelsea makes me laugh, says he's not interested what his players do in private.

So, obviously condones screwing around, GBH, murder, etc etc

Do you want to?

Appoint Sven for example, spend lots of money, lots of press interest and generally everyone waiting to revel in it completely collapsing, which it no doubt would.

Adkins is sensible for footballing reasons, not celebrity.

Tbf I don't really care too much who is in charge as long as they get us out of this sh!tty league but what this appointment says to me is that cortese has gone for the cheap option and the club are entering a new phase of not spending good money on good players and once again relying on the academy and unknown players.....a bit like the poortvliet saga.

I honestly thought we had moved away from the cheap option, let's not kid ourselves this is the cheap option.

All if true of course.

And Man Citeh, or did I dream that?

Anyway fwiw, I thought Strachan was a joke appointment, thought Burley was a blinding signing and thought Pardew was a bit underwhelming... I'm sure I am not alone in those three assessments.

Which just shows, most fans know FECK ALL until the bloke is here and getting results - good or bad.

This the Echo who is reportin this. The same Echo that Cortese has fallen out with. Anyone thought that Cortese may have fed this to the Echo to make them look stupid? Just a thought.

You mean it IS going to be Avram Grant ???

This forum makes me smile. Having spent 10 days drooling over a list of possible managers who would never come to a League One side they then throw their toys out of the pram when ... they ... don't....come. Frankly, any appointment was going to be a disappointment after some of the names that have been bandied about. If Adkins is as good as Cortese clearly thinks he is then he will soon have the players onside. Is he better than Pardew? - who knows? - the question is now pointless but his record so far suggests he might well be. As to premiership experience? lets worry about that when we get there but David Moyes hasn't done so badly - nor Mcleish. Damn - perhaps we should appoint a Scot.

your very wrong!

bums on seats means better atmosphere at st marys, more income which means better players more feel good factor which means better team and club spirit... that would carry the club along way... but still your not interested in filling the ground so lets keep 14-18 thousand empty seats a game

Agreed. I was underwhelmed when AP was appointed but think he was a good manager for us, albeit we still played inconsistently.

I'll back Adkins or whoever is the new manager but would prefer a more high profile person - however, I will just sit back and watch as there is nothing I can do to influence the appointment of the next manager.
