aintforever Posted 7 September, 2010 Share Posted 7 September, 2010 personally..if any saints manager wants to spend money on marlon king..i really hope they are told to do one You are using an extreme example, I doubt any manager would want that scumbag in their side. My point is that good managers have a talent for finding the right players and blending them into a successful squad. It's a talent you should harness not water down. sadoldgit Posted 7 September, 2010 Share Posted 7 September, 2010 http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/saints/news/8374982.Reed_to_be_kingmaker/ Quite illuminating. I'm surprised no-one has commented on this unless it's hidden in a 50 page thread somewhere. I can't see someone like O'Neill standing for this kind of nonsense. Does anyone know of a continental club that has this kind of system? It sounds like a recipe for failure to me Apparently we re not allowed to critisise Mr Cortese because he saved us from going out of business (which will be comforting if we get relegated again this year). I don't know about Lowesque. I think Nicola is all out there on his own.
Wade Garrett Posted 7 September, 2010 Share Posted 7 September, 2010 Nothing that Reed has done in his career suggests that he should hold a top post at any football club. If the article is true there is no way in the world a 'big name' manager would waste their time with us. Can you imagine Ferguson, Wenger, Moyes, Hughes or even Pulis tolerating such a situation? derry Posted 8 September, 2010 Share Posted 8 September, 2010 I've seen the reports about coaching staff resigning, citing difficulties working with Pardew but the idea of him (a) not buying into the available technology and (b) interfering with development employees work appear new. Where does this come from? (apologies if it is already on one of the threads somewhere...) A current first team player that likes the technology available. also critical of the lack of rehearsing set pieces.

derry Posted 8 September, 2010 Share Posted 8 September, 2010 (edited) Nope, I disagree. How about Reed being on the transfer committee deciding on which players we buy? and the manager of the club certainly should be allowed input on the reserves and u18s, especially if he is considering playing some of them in forthcoming 1st team matches Pardew was a member of that committee as was the scouting manager David Burke plus Reed and Cortese. If Pardew was so incensed about alleged interference why didn't he do the honourable thing and resign. Pardew instructed that all the club's teams played the same way as the first team. Apart from the fact that the way the first team played was one dimensional, narrow, restricted and has been worked out by the teams playing at SMS to our detriment. This was nowhere near the compelling, attractive style that Markus and Cortese agreed with Pardew at the end of last season when it looked like he would be sacked, that the club would work towards playing what would become in time the Southampton style. No wonder the development side didn't like it. No wonder Cortese came down on their side. Edited 8 September, 2010 by derry
Topcat Posted 8 September, 2010 Share Posted 8 September, 2010 Serious question. Do you have OCD? Endless snidey posts about the same people. I had an open mind on Reed up until about a week ago when having started a thread on him, facts came to light on his real role and history. Since he has chosen to undermine our chances of promotion by helping to push Pardew out, I hold him accountable along wiith Cortese. The last figure in that role who created havoc was Wotte and relegation+administration followed. So buctootim a Serious question, how much is Cortese paying you? derry Posted 8 September, 2010 Share Posted 8 September, 2010 What you state is very true. So why would Cortese seem to be placing what I would regard as a disproportionate amount of faith in Les Reed, who worked closely with the shockingly poor Kevin Kegan England regime, and was involved in the implementation of a coaching structure at the FA that has produced the outcome you described? Or back him against a manager who when given two world class international players tried to get them to play his way rather than build the team around them then dropped them. Furthermore was sacked from his last two jobs and now achieved his hat trick.

OR are we going to get more poor selection..... Once again I am curious of who you would chose to be our glorious new leader..... Any favourites from your school of coaching or are you firmly in the Reed and Merrington school of youth coaching.. Howe for example. cheers derry...let us hope we get the tright coach for the first team and not one who has to change his style and personality to suit others... Someone in the mould of Pards...maybe a slight more flair but who can deal with our present squad + AND with a proper midfield battler..Tp sort Spiderman and Hammond out...is my view... Never understood your continued attack against Pards...but hey ho onwards we go with all our little choices... Hope your choice of Adkin OD or Howe works out.... Personally I would go with SOD but not so sure he would Kow Tow to Sir Less... Whatever you and I and our friends on this forum and in the stadium want what is best for Saints...So lets go with the flow and PRAY.... nOTHING PERSONAL BY THE WAY ..i DO Like you even those you are not as good a coach as me or Pards.... PS IF we get a manager who gets a couple of results.......some will say..look he is better than Pards.. Continues to lose..some will say ...look it is Pards team stiil and his style of play.... Me thinks for some reason you did not like Pards...style of play.....my arssse..enal Edited 8 September, 2010 by ottery st mary
saintjay77 Posted 8 September, 2010 Share Posted 8 September, 2010 Thing is football is a results game asking fans (saints fans in particular who have put up with a lot in the last few years) to hang on for a few years while we get things sorted isn't going to go down to well. weren't we promised prem in five years? I agree with that, but if NC wasnt happy with the results to date as he expected us to reach the play offs last year, and expected us to have a better return on our games this year, then his drive to make sure we get to the Prem ASAP resulted in the sacking of Pards and recruitment of someone that he believes will take us there quicker within the model of how he wants the club run then why shouldnt we give it a chance? I dont think the new model will be an instant success so prepared to be patient while it gets ironed out. I think it could be good for us in the long run if its a success. Im not sure Les Reed is the right man for the DoF as much as I wasnt sure Pards was right for us long term. Within that 5 Years I was half expecting a number of changes to happen until we get things right. I never expected us to sit still in that 5 years either and who ever we had here would have brought us success by our standards. What I think NC wants is for us to be one of the worlds best clubs and not just a club that holds its own in the prem with a few good cup runs. It sounds crazy to us as we have spent so long hoping we wouldnt get relegated that we never dreamed we would one day be a top club. Only way we will find out if NC can make us into that super club is to hang on and enjoy the ride. What other option do we have? I hope he knows what he is doing and I hope he can get 50% of the success that he dreams of. As that will be 50% more success than we have had since the 70's IMO. ottery st mary Posted 8 September, 2010 Share Posted 8 September, 2010 Heard the same speeek when Rupes brought in the 10 year plan with the Dutch boyzzz.... All of the managers you mention are the more traditional managers that wouldnt work well in that situation. Maybe Wenger might in the past as he had David Dein?? I think but even then I think most of the power was with Wenger. There are some top class managers that can work well in this structure however, Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti, Rafael Benitez and Cappello all can work well and succeed in this format. saintjay77 Posted 8 September, 2010 Share Posted 8 September, 2010 Yes but they have absolute total control over the team and agree or refuse aquisitions put to them by coaching staff/DOF Any other statement to the contrary would be false....These men live or die by the team they run... Rafa's comments when talking about the agreement not to go after liverpool players suggest otherwise. When asked he said he was the 1st team coach and he had nothing to do with who those above him were trying to bring in. I dont think Capello had much to do with who the club brought in a real madrid either. The difference between these clubs and ours however is that those at the top were trying to bring in the worlds best players. Players that who ever was managing the 1st team would have loved to have in there squad. We are at the other end of that market so IMO the manager needs to be heavily involved in talks about who is needed for the level we are at. I also think that the slight twist on this format that our club want to adobt is that instead of buying the best players from elsewhere for mega bucks, we want to create the best players in the world and keep them at our club. So the Les Reed role is hugly important as its on his head to bring in the best kids and develop them into the best players for the manager to use. I dont know of any other clubs that do this to the extent our club wish to do it. Maybe Ajax a few years back was the closest example? For it to work Les Reed (or who ever replaces him in the future) needs to consistantly produce top class players playing the "Southampton Way" of football so they can slot into the managers 1st team when ever they are ready or called upon. The 1st team manager needs to buy into this logic 100% and instead of wasting his time looking for the best players everyone else has got to bring in, he needs to use the best talent from within. If it works then it could be fantastic IMO but will need a mamouth amount of things to work right or it will struggle for a long time.
