New manager announcement tomorrow

The only question for me would be: is better than our last manager? That will show whether the last week has signalled short-term pain for long-term gain, or whether we've completely shot ourselves in the foot.

Leading question Steve, most of the potential managers mentioned don't do it for me.

The ONLY reason Adkins is a disappointing appointment is because so many idiot ITK, or NOT-ITK people banged on about O'Neil and people of that calibre

No. It's because last year, when we had just been relegated, had -10 points for the coming year, a squad full of players who were clearly not up to the job, and were a complete shambolic mess, we managed to attract a recognised manager with experience not only of management in the Premiership but promotion to it.

SFC is arguably now light years ahead of where it was then, and this is the best we can do?

But then why would any manager worth their salt put their metaphorical head on the block and take the job now?

Adkins has experience in getting team promoted from L1 but managing Saints will be far different to managing a team that has far less aspirations, ambition and expectations. I just hope NC gives him a chance and doesn't interfere in the footballing side. If it is Adkins then I hope he is not going to be a "Yes" man to NC/LR.

On the other hand maybe Adkins has been deliberately leaked so NC really pulls something "wow" out of the bag, but that is probably wishful thinking.

Gordon Strachan taught me to never underestimate a managerial appointment, but I'd be underwhelmed. Whoever gets appointed must not only get us back to the Championship but also make us competitive enough to fight for promotion to the Premiership. Adkins? Howe? I'm not so sure.

I think Cortese might bring in a 'name' but we'll see.

The first, the very first task for the new manager is to make a connection with the bloody first team and get them responding. Transfers, biscuit expense account, secretary to ****, all are secondary.

If its Adkins, I am going to keep an open-mind, because I dont really know him or his abilities.

If its Mowbray or Howe, I will be quietly confident.

If its MON, I am going to jizz over my wifes face.

Anyone else and I am going to be disappointed.

Nail on head, and same for me

I hope your wife is thirsty

I wish people would stop citing "the ability to manage with very limited resources" as a valuable attribute.

The whole point of the Liebherr/Cortese era and the Five-Year Plan was to leave those days behind.

There are numerous important qualities but that's not one of them IMO.

In fact, it could well be a liability rather than an attribute.

FWIW I still think the appointment is going to surprise us. Adkins would be good but the only reason he is being touted around is because of his odds suddenly being slashed.

Oh and I've just been down to both ladbrokes and Betfred to put my money on Mowbray (still got a feeling about it) and neither of them are taking bets anymore

Far more to Adkins than being an ex physio. His CV shows he is real football man, and has made his name by delivering in difficult circumstances.

Just what we need, a guy with experience in spending zero money, managing a team of youngsters, getting the best out of aging pro's............

Oh... thats us 2 years ago. Not now....

I only hope that these PM's that were flying around on here last night haven't built everybody's hopes up, only for the appointment to end up as a 'BIG' letdown to them. I didn't request a PM from the person 'ITK' for this very reason, there is nothing worse than getting excited about something only for it to end up as a damp squib! FWIW, Cortese will want instant results from the manager the minute he takes over SO the appointment will need to be someone who will command respect from the players the minute he walks into the dressing room, so he has to have been there and done it at a high level IMO. Adkins or Howe would be good appointments for a club who will give them time, but Cortese wants promotion yesterday!!! Mowbray would be a decent appointment, but i just have a gut feeling we will end up with Zola. We will see.

He thought working at Newcastle with the likes of Rob Lee, Alan Shearer, Shay Given, Nolberto Solano etc.. was beneath him. I really dont think he would enjoy working with Hammond, Puncheon, Barnard and Jaidi. No disrespect to who I've mentioned but I think Gullit would get frustrated with their limitations very quickly.

Quite frankly I had never heard of Adkins until last few days. Seems a hell of a gamble to me, may have got Scunny promoted twice, both times on a shoestring, but also had them relegated and a survival by the skin of their teeth. No experience working with "star" players, no consistent winning experience in the league above us. Can't see it and will be underwhelmed. Still maybe he could teach Davis a few things about goalkeeping given his playing experience (such as not always hoofing it to Rickie). Seems like the sort of appointment that might well get us promoted, followed by a swift sacking as soon as he struggles in a higher division. Can anyone really see this guy managing us in the Prem? Sorry, no offence to the bloke who sounds perfectly good at this level, but hardly what we need right now.

I think we all know its going to be Adkins.

I cant say i'm excited by that. Doesnt have me rushing to the ticket office, if we sign a decent loan or two and start winning then i'll start going again.

Woohoo scunnys ex physio!! Red army, red army.

I wonder if the Liverpool fans had the same reaction to Bob Paisley who also was their physio?

I wouldn't be disappointed with Adkins, the more I read about him the more confident I am that he will get us out of this league. We failed to gain promotion last season and I now think Cortese's 5 year plan is out of the window (for a bit) and it has now become a 1 year plan, which is to get us out of League 1. He's looked around and though the best way to do that is employ a manager that has managed to get his team promoted from League 1 twice, so he obviously knows what he's doing in this league. And that's with a team with nowt to spend really, I expect he could be even better with a bit of money and some decent players.

Top priority is to get in the Championship, Adkins is probably more qualified than others to achieve this, then we can re assess next season.

Likewise, other than the obvious pipe-dream suggestion of O'Neill, or possibly Brown, but maybe NC has something up his sleeve that none of us have thought of.

Mowbray was always my preferred choice, yet he has seldom figured in the rumour mill over the past week.

He is available and one would think that his brand of football fits in with NC's vision of "The Southampton Way"!

Wonder whether he might yet come out of left field !

As others have said I don't see that Adkins "shows that Cortese knows what he is doing" as 5-live commentators said the appointment would. That phrase implied the new man would be a big name --someone of at least the same reputation/stature as Pardew. Adkins has yet to prove himself to be that good.

But that's not to say he won't turn out to be a good appointment. He may well be excellent and he'll have my support, as do all the players. [although I reserve the right to occasionally suggest that he may have made a bad decision and may wish to reconsider ..in much the same way as I occasionally politely suggest this to the referee ;-) ]

Only M.O'Neill as the appointment would have actually got me saying wow, and that was always a pipe dream.

I think Adkins would be a great appointment personally. Not exactly a massive name to set the pulse racing, but more than capable of leading us out of L1 and the NPC. He's shown what he can do with few resources at a smaller club, and I think this would be a great opportunity for him to show what he can do one rung up the ladder.
