NickG Posted 5 September, 2010 Posted 5 September, 2010 Thought he was very good again yesterday. for a CB, with few starts and only 20 years old thought he looked comfident and solid. Won nearly everything in the air, pretty quick. Plays safe - sometimes too much so. Another good prospect.
Seaford Saint Posted 5 September, 2010 Posted 5 September, 2010 He was outstanding and mark my words, we'll do well to keep hold of him. A well done for Pardew for his part in spotting the potential and developing the talent
S-Clarke Posted 5 September, 2010 Posted 5 September, 2010 Good player, getting better with every game. thought he'd ruined his knee for their first goal tough, as his studs got caught in the bloody rubbish pitch, but luckily he was ok.
Katalinic Posted 5 September, 2010 Posted 5 September, 2010 Good player, getting better with every game. thought he'd ruined his knee for their first goal tough, as his studs got caught in the bloody rubbish pitch, but luckily he was ok. The pitch is dangerous - Fonte also managed to kick a large lump out of it instead of the ball and it is cutting up in every match. Perhaps it should not have been re-laid in the summer after all.
Saint Fan CaM Posted 5 September, 2010 Posted 5 September, 2010 I agree - Martin was close to being MotM for me yesterday. Calm and collected but decisive enough to blast the ball if necessary and he was winning a higher % of headers than Fonte. I also think Fonte likes playing with him - a good sign and they could develop into a very good 1st choice pairing.

Perhaps it should not have been re-laid in the summer after all. It is really bad, Davis is busy relaying the turf when we have corners. Never known it to be this bad, and we've relaid it a few times since we've been at St Mary's.
RonManager Posted 5 September, 2010 Posted 5 September, 2010 I've said it before and I'll say it again. He will play for England one day.

70's Mike Posted 5 September, 2010 Posted 5 September, 2010 good job Martin was on his game yesterday, because imo Fonte was miles of his
kpturner Posted 5 September, 2010 Posted 5 September, 2010 A well done for Pardew for his part in spotting the potential and developing the talentNot sure that Pardew had anything to do with spotting his potential (assuming you refer to when he was Eastleigh) TBH.
sidthesquid Posted 5 September, 2010 Posted 5 September, 2010 I think he looks the biz to me. Strong and wins a lot in the air and with telescopic legs to reach the ball when it seems the other guy might get away. And playing a neat short pass to a team-mate is better than the Jaidi approach any day
Iowsaintsfan Posted 5 September, 2010 Posted 5 September, 2010 I was very impressed with him yesterday as i was with OC
Alan56 Posted 5 September, 2010 Posted 5 September, 2010 It is really bad, Davis is busy relaying the turf when we have corners. Never known it to be this bad, and we've relaid it a few times since we've been at St Mary's. Pity he is not concentrating on his game. One season too far in my view!!
CanadaSaint Posted 5 September, 2010 Posted 5 September, 2010 I was really impressed when he gestured to Fonte to pick up O'Grady as he cut in from wide, which Fonte ended up failing to do with the result that we went 1-0 down (assist to Kelvin, who should never have been beaten on his near post). That was no flash in the pan - it showed excellent reading and a high level of maturity which bodes really well for the future. The only time he looked uncomfortable was when Fonte was sucked out wide to cover for Butterfield failing to get back in time; both goals and the near-OG came from that kind of situation. I think he'll be the bedrock of our defence for years to come as long as we can hold onto him. His form should help us to see the best of Fonte and should push the aging Jaidi into the background. Really important to me, though, is what Happy Harry thinks of him. Get typing, Harry!
RedAndWhite91 Posted 5 September, 2010 Posted 5 September, 2010 I was at Gillingham away and Southend last season when he played, since then I've rated him highly. His performances this season have only backed up my view. If we aren't in the Premier League within 3 years, he will be, I just hope we keep hold of him as he has a lot of potential.
SuperMikey Posted 5 September, 2010 Posted 5 September, 2010 Completely agree, he's got to be our first-choice 'other CB' now. Jaidi is at the stage where he's deteriorating physically and technically, and Seaborne is still too accident prone and dodgy for my liking.
John Smith Posted 6 September, 2010 Posted 6 September, 2010 Sorry guys, have to disagree. Not saying he hasn;t got talent and that he didn't play well enough on Saturday, but, their first goal, he allowed the player running through the middle too much time. He opened up the pass to be slid in. If he had experience, he would've forced the player into running to our left side where we had Harding coming back. He allowed the pass to be simple and to the guys feet and the first time shot easily beat Kelvin, although it did seema rather poor effort. Hey, not saying he can;t improve or won't improve, just that experience would have told him the direct route was the wrong route. Also, some on here slating Jaidi, even though he didn't play, jeesh. FWIW, Fonte had his hands full with their forward. He was awkward and strong. IMO, Jaidi would've done a better job on him purely because he would've out muscled him. However, their atttcks were so few and far between, it didn't really have an influence on the game. Martin effectively played sweeper to Fonte forcing the issueby being shirt tight on their attacker, worked well in my opinion, but, like I said, Jaidi is the man when we need to defend against a big lump. Also, Butterfield played very well, very supportive of whoever he had in front of him. Delivered some decent crosses into the box.
Deppo Posted 6 September, 2010 Posted 6 September, 2010 I'm surprised he played, seeing as Cortese insists on Jaidi when he's picking the team and Martin is suspended for complaining about the Pardew sacking.

st alex Posted 13 November, 2010 Posted 13 November, 2010 Is he injured? Jaidi's been picked ahead of him again. Shame as it seemed that under Pardew he had just managed to make that second center back spot his own.
SuperMikey Posted 13 November, 2010 Posted 13 November, 2010 Rumour has it that a loan move to Hereford fell through for him the other week. Probably not favoured by Adkins.
Saint_clark Posted 13 November, 2010 Posted 13 November, 2010 He hasn't been in the squad since Pardew left; http://www.saintsweb.co.uk/showthread.php?26370-Saints-Pardew-fiasco-to-enter-spotlight Related to one of the points raised in the OP of this thread?
