The Fat Fig in Bedford Place.

A little greek restaurant serving excellent proper greek food. Loads of veggie options and really good prices too.

I've been considering this place for a while. I get a falafel wrap from there once a month but never actually sat in for a meal. Menu doesn't appear to be that big but if the main meals are anything like the falafel wraps (which are one of the best things I've ever tasted) then I can't see me being disappointed! Thanks for the review

What about that pub just as you come into Toton off the Redbridge fly-over? Heard that they do a brilliant barbecue.

Did you really mean this, or should there have been a wink type smiley thing? - my guess is you're referring to the Red Lion that caught fire in slightly iffy circumstances the other week.

Sinc i've been back, this site has pointed the way to the best bars and the best restaurants in town. So, anybody know of any good hairdressers in town? (looking at the stylist end of the market, rather than chop and hop).

Stylists? There's a good one near the co-op in bedford place apparently, assuming you are after a women's hairdresser.

Harington's Storm in Bedford place are very good. Been going there for about 8 years. Very very friendly and experienced staff. Mens cut Average price around £35

Anyway, went out to New Forest in the end. Went to Whitley Ridge Hotel in Brockenhurst. The place looked amazing; a very grand mansion in really nice grounds. We were the only customers in the whole place though and the staff came out from their hidey holes after a while of us being in there. Was quite creepy and a strange experience having everyone waiting on only us.The place used to be a Michelin restaurant but was sold off, after problems I guess. The food looked amazing and very posh but ultimately lacked flavour and was in the end pretty disappointing. Good place for the wow factor though and they are refurbishing soon (not that its needed) so they may improve the food then too.

Piccolo Mondo if youre on a budget, great food and very good service.

talk about the kiss of death, ive been going to piccolos since the early eighties, theyve been in the same place all that time, it used to be alongside the old bus station when subway records were there (and Subway sandwich bar hadnt been invented.) I finally recommend it to someone and boom, the place closes, went up for sale at the weekend.

Best curry ever- Corriander Lounge, not been open long, is down opposite Holy Rood. Ennios opposite the Pier is class on an evening, never been during the day though.
Funnily enough we had our first meal at Corianders before the match Saturday. Mind you, having lost so dismally, I might have to consider it a bad omen and stop going match days. ;)

But I was impressed with their buffet, the service and the decor of the place. Very good food at reasonable prices, also many Asians eating there which is a good recommendation in itself and many who greeted the manager/proprietor, or who were greeted warmly by him, all evidence of contented regular customers.

A Chinese buffet is a travesty, as the food deteriorates from standing around. But an Indian buffet is no problem, as the flavours develop with the extra heating. A good selection of dishes to, with some things I had not tried before. The Mango Lassi drink is highly recommended.

Promising and we'll go there again.

Depends where you go.

Pilgrim house buffet is f*cking amazing, but then they don't sit the food around you order as much as you want individually.

Regarding the request for a barber, the one in Burgess Road near to the Uni is pretty much up there with some of the finest stylists I have ever had.

I think the owner is a local as people are constantly popping their heads in and chatting with him. Whilst waiting for a trim a couple of weeks ago he did some very impressive cuts on a couple of young lads, in readiness for the new term no doubt. No mucking around he sculpted some pretty cool (sorry) tramlines which really did suit the hairstyles. I would recomend them if you want a young trendy cut, and don't be put off by anyone smirking at the difference between a 'barber' and a 'stylist', the term 'men's hair stylist' is just gay-speak for a 'barber'. Take that from the horses mouth.

Had my first ever pizza in there when I was about 4 (am 31 this year). I went to school with the son of the people who owned it, pretty sure the surname was Bibbo?

would it have been Tony Cicu? He had a son and a daughter but I cant recall their names, they would have been at school around your time.

Think you'll find that the OP's birthday was Monday just gone and none of you f***ers said happy birthday. Anyhow, hope you had a good evening and hope you followed advice from Tripadvisor which I use every time rather than rely on this lot :)

Thanks tractor_saint :-) good of you to point that out! Not that I was checking this place on my birthday. I was two busy sat in an empty, eery Whitley ridge eating with my eyes and wishing for flavour :)

Whitley ridge not so long ago was a up comming place, owned by the guy who has Limewood nr Lyndhurst "Ineos chemicals" anyway his chef AA is no longer there, an empty place must be costing a fortune to run..

I really got a sense that it could/should be a really popular gem of a place but the food clearly let's it down these days. I guess not a lot of people know it's there/can get to it based on it being in the middle of the new forest. Cheers for the background info

Can't believe Boozy Rouge is closing down! Fantastic place!

Went to La Cantina in Bedford Place. Was very impressed!

Also, the best Italian I have ever had is L'arcadia in Netley. Lovely little family run place! http://www.larcadia.co.uk/14.html

Edit. Just found out that L'arcadia has closed down now which is a real shame!

best Italian I ever had was at a place called La Scala in Sandown Isle Of Wight, any island posters know if its still there? (it WAS a while ago!)

Not forgetting Ghandi's in Portswood. Open for about 6 months and well worth a visit.

Indeed. In fact Portswood has now got quite a lot of options for decent food. As previously mentioned The Crown for good pub grub, Ceno has a restaurant menu and bar menu, both of which are very good. Ghandhi is a very nice curry restaurant, but you also have Kohinoor (part of Kuti's chain) which is immense and also Natraj which is very good. You then have Sara's Thai restaurant which, for my money, is much better than Thai cafe in Oxford St. Trago Lounge is also ok, more along the line of pub grub. Also, the Gordon Arms serves the best burgers in Southampton, hude homemade efforts the size of a cricket ball. You also have La Baronia (Mexican, pretty good) and Mango Thai, which is lovely.
