david in sweden Posted 3 September, 2010 Posted 3 September, 2010 to ignore the chance to sign some cover for the strikers. So now we are without Lallana for 6 weeks..and Barnard for three matches..that leaves Ricky and Connolly as the only available strikers. Maybe ...Cortese vetoed the idea because he knew he was going to can AP? Maybe AP didn't find / couldn't get... the player he wanted, but to all those who said we were OK up front, and didn't need anyone.. I'm one of those people who; together with some of the regulars..who raised the subject several times. I really don't like saying " I told you so " ..but this is exactly the scenario I feared and the truth is obvious to all. Sorry NC - but BAD planning ! ..not least because if you're going to sack someone..OK.. but you should have someone new... ready to step in...when you drop the axe!
Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 3 September, 2010 Posted 3 September, 2010 Loans are available again from next week. Also, is Barney banned for 3 games? I thought he was off for two yellows?
RedArmy Posted 3 September, 2010 Posted 3 September, 2010 . I really don't like saying " I told you so " So you made a new thread about it instead of putting in somewhere else for maximum "LOOK AT ME, I WAS RIGHT TOO" exposure.
NickG Posted 3 September, 2010 Posted 3 September, 2010 Ricky and Connolly are not too bad for league 1 - with the loan window opening as well
Ashley Grute Posted 3 September, 2010 Posted 3 September, 2010 I would play AOC up front with Ricky after the Swindon game!
MarkSFC Posted 3 September, 2010 Posted 3 September, 2010 Yep. Exactly the fear I had (well, Rickie out would be worse) but now we have no striker option on the bench AND Lallana is out. New manager and a loan or three needed asap!!
Stu Man Do Posted 3 September, 2010 Posted 3 September, 2010 Loans are available again from next week. Also' date=' is Barney banned for 3 games? I thought he was off for two yellows?[/quote'] Apparently he was sent off for a straight red ... from the referee who brought you a change in the rules about corners and no penalties when a defender jumps on Gulys back ... we bring you "oops I've pulled out a yellow card when I meant to bring out a red".
trousers Posted 3 September, 2010 Posted 3 September, 2010 So now we are without Lallana for 6 weeks..and Barnard for three matches..that leaves Ricky and Connolly as the only available strikers. In other words, we have adequate cover in Ricky and Connolly for the temporary loss of Lallana and Barnard. With Guly (attacking midfielder) and Chamberlain providing extra 'cover' for those positions. Are you suggesting we should have had cover for the cover for the cover that we already have in place? :-)
SoccerMom Posted 3 September, 2010 Posted 3 September, 2010 Haven't you seen the website today? Apparently the cover is Butterfield.

Chez Posted 3 September, 2010 Posted 3 September, 2010 We still have two fit strikers and the loan window is going to open up awhere hopefully we have players lined up.

Jesus, you love to attention seek over nothing, don't you? At the start of the transfer window Pardew said he wanted to bring in cover for Lambert. All throughout the window, amongst Alpine's "why haven't we signed anyone yet" threads there was consensus that following on from the signings of Dickson and the two right backs that we were still deficient in three areas; cover at CM; replacement for Antonio; cover for Lambert. Pretty much everyone agreed that was the case, yet here you are with another "look at me, I was right" post. Pathetic, especially when 95% of people were on the same sheet of music in the first place.
West End Saint Posted 3 September, 2010 Posted 3 September, 2010 We still have two fit strikers and the loan window is going to open up awhere hopefully we have players lined up. I hope we do as Lambo must be carrying a injury or isnt match fit yet something is amiss connolly and Lambo both fit are top draw no question but connolly is always suspect to picking up a injury. I know we can and probably will get a loan or 2 for cover it would be mad not to but who will we get and who will make the decision ? We dont have any options from the bench for a out & out striker I hope Lambo & Connolly are going to be ok for the next 3 games
VectisSaint Posted 3 September, 2010 Posted 3 September, 2010 to ignore the chance to sign some cover for the strikers. So now we are without Lallana for 6 weeks..and Barnard for three matches..that leaves Ricky and Connolly as the only available strikers. Did anyone seriously suggest that we were OK for strikers? It was blindingly obvious to all that we needed a backup for RL and there were many posts saying so, I don't recall many disagreeing. Now we have 2 fit strikers, and no-one on the bench as cover. It looks like Butts is being lined up to play up front, presumably with Harding playing LB and Dickson (or Mills) at RB. It is shocking to have only 3 signed strikers, it doesn't matter how good they are.

SoccerMom Posted 3 September, 2010 Posted 3 September, 2010 There's Sam Hoskins, last season's top scorer in the Academy. Very young, though.
doddisalegend Posted 3 September, 2010 Posted 3 September, 2010 Surely this is what the reserve/devolpment squad is for? isn't the point of reserve squads to have players who can stand in if needed? Pulis to get a chance to play emergency striker and become a fans favorite after putting four past Rochdale? or we could just play 4-5-1

doddisalegend Posted 3 September, 2010 Posted 3 September, 2010 Right I'll admit I now next to nothing about Ryan Doble but he is listed as a first team striker, is he so bad he cant cover Barnard for three games? http://www.saintsfc.co.uk/page/ProfilesDetail/0,,10280~47722,00.html
Saint_clark Posted 3 September, 2010 Posted 3 September, 2010 How do you know we ignored the chance? Maybe no-one was available who was good enough and wanted to sit in our reserves, and maybe get a chance on the bench every few weeks.
trousers Posted 3 September, 2010 Posted 3 September, 2010 There's Sam Hoskins, last season's top scorer in the Academy. Very young, though. "if you're good enough, you're old enough" Jimmy Tarbuck, April 1977

Pathetic, especially when 95% of people were on the same sheet of music in the first place. well if you were one of the 95% then you deserve a say too ! ..and you made the exact same point in your reply. When the subject was being discussed at the end of last season there was a decided majority that said;" we don't need anyone, Ricky can score 30 goals ..and the others will make up the difference." My arguement was that in the case of; injuries, loss of form or suspensions we have problems ..and now...we do. With all the player activity since July 1st..I cannot believe that AP couldn't find " someone " capable of filling the gap " or was it NC who knew he would sack AP and wouldn't sanction any more buys? I was reluctant to write as I did, but it was really aimed at those who ignored the possibility of the fact that we are now in that situation. As a Saints fan for over 50 years ...I have a right to an opinion as much as anyone and in all honesty I hope we do find an alternative from within the ranks because the " best of the rest" have certainly moved onto other clubs by now. I'll restrain myself from any more outbursts if it pleases you , meanwhile I'm off to my son's wedding today..let's hope we have a good result to come home to.
alehouseboys Posted 4 September, 2010 Posted 4 September, 2010 Surely this is what the reserve/devolpment squad is for? The only bugger is we aint got a reserve squad. We've got an U21s but if you're a fringe player/cover and you're of a certain age (ie over 21) you aint been playing competitive football. Not ideal when you're suddenly called for first team football.
