You get a good manager and the premiership players that can't get in the 25 squads will want to join a good setup.

Imagine what Martin O'neil could bring us?

Btw I have been to the last 6 new managers training session and Tuesday I'm off!

hehe.

First reaction is shock. To win 4-0 away would normally grant a manager time to develope his squad and see where he goes.

The wording in the statement seems to me that the whole setup wasn't working. I thought pardew was in favour of the whole setup? Was there a problem there that we were not aware of?

After seeing Zola and copple's name a few times I can't say I am all that excited. I hope we would be upgrading the management team and those names IMO would be going the other way.

I think the signings have been done by the team above pardew rather than by pardew so don't think it will halt the possibility of more if there are any.

Last year Norwich lost their 1st game at home 7-1 and sacked their manager....didn't turn out too bad for them, did it. As much as this has left a bitter taste in my mouth, I'm reserving judgement on how this season is going to pan out until I know what Cortese has up his sleeve.

I think AP can count himself unlucky to have been sacked at this stage. Apart from not making the play-offs last season and the poor pre-season this year and slow start things have started to move on.

Cortese wants promotion and obviously does not believe Pardew will lead us there. He must have someone better in mind or lined up !

Good luck to Pardew and thanks for all you have achieved after the Dutch duo !

Only thing about this that surprises me is the timing.

Has to be a new manager lined up already.

Maybe Zola is a new signing, not the manager. All the West ham players said that he was the best player in training every day.

Oh my goodness! It only makes any sense at all if there is a 'better' manager lined up to replace Pardew. For what it's worth I think he did a decent job for us and I'll miss him. Thanks for all your work in rebuilding the first team at SFC Mr P.

Madness. If it was going to be done (and I don't agree with it) then it should have been done at the end of last season.

....+1, that's the crux of it for me. And he was close to doing it too, but was talked out of it then.

Not sure hes' really given him much chance this year to do anything.

Just heard, awful. This is an absolute joke, I had always supported NC and thought that the stories of a rift were false and blown out of proportion. This is ****ing ****. I am absolutely livid.

I hope Pards goes to Villa and wins the Premier League. Good Luck Alan - bet manager we've had for years - thanks for doing all the hard work of building a team so the next manager can look good.

Anyone else think the only thing keeping AP in a job before was that Markus told NC not to sack him?

what on earth is cortese doing

he's been waiting to do this for a while, but the timing utterly beggars belief.

what an idiot. This will now probably cost us any chance of a top 2 spot, it's ruined our season.

Suggest timing was forced by the sudden death of M.L and would have happened earlier. Personally sorry it has happened as believe Pardew would have got us promotion this year.

However, this is where we really start to find out what Cortese is about. At this stage we have no option but to put our trust in Cortese but who he is about to appoint will have in my opinion nearly as big an inpact on Southampton f.c. in the next 5 years as M.LSS purchase of our club.

he had last year TBF.

yes the timing's 'odd' but the decision in isolation is, IMO, right. take out of the equation that it's 08:57 on 30/08 - the DECISION is right

I'm gutted. I think AP is a top manager, he has signed some excellent players and over the last year played some of the most attractive and exciting football I have ever seen from a Saints team. If it really is Zola then NC needs his head examined - top player maybe but shocking signings and chaotic tactics had West Ham heading for the drop last season.

Sad day for our club

What worries me is that we have got through 6 managers in such a short space of time. Stability is the name of the game and we seem to be making the same mistake again.

I'm finding this stuff about players being unsettled a bit OTT. As Stuart Pearce once said "Players aren't really bothered as long as they have their posh motor in the club car park."

Any player who signs for a club knows that the chances of the bloke signing you staying the manager are pretty slim unless it is Wenger or Ferguson.

Madness!!!!!!!!

Trying to work out the thinking here???????????????????????//

If cortese felt AP could not get us promoted why did he give hin 4 games this season?

Did Cortese expect us to win every game? If he does then how long will the new management team be given?

Does he think a new guy wil simply roll in to town and guarantee us promotion?

If we fail this season with the new man will he give him 4 games next season?

The man has really lost the plot IMO...

Oh dear Oh dear Oh dear

Our football club is becoming a laughing stock again.

Thanks for your great work at this club and i am sure you would have succeded, just a shame that Mr Cortese has no patience

and very little knowledge about how to build a succesful team....

If anyone felt AP was under pressure, the new guy had better have shoulders like the hulk.

Good luck to our new man because he is sure going to need it.

Credentails for new manager

1 WIN EVERYGAME

2 AS ABOVE

3 AS ABOVE

My first reaction was shock, but having had 10 minutes to digest the news it doesn't come as a complete surprise.

I just jhope we go with an English manager who's had success at this level, and not some big foreign name who has no idea of how the third tier of English football works.

Absolutly bizarre . Pardew comes in last season with no pre season -10 points . Blends the team together adds a few additions , got some excellent loan players in last season , just miss out on promotion , Saints are notorioulsy slow starters in the league . A great 4-0 win away from got and we all knew we would push right on after this win .This Cortese is a real piece of work , if Liebeherr was still with us im not so sure this would be happening especially after such a good win .

Unlucky AP im sure youve been paid off well .

I await with baited breath to see who we come up with , with the calibre of AP , someone the players will look up to and want to play for .

Cortese doesn't think like a football man and he doesn't care that we've won 4-0 if the other two league matches have resulted in 1 point against teams that aren't performing very well themselves. Without the win over us Plymouth are on 1 point out of 9, without the 1-1 Leyton Orient on 3 points out of 9. I agree with the posters above who suggest that we must be replacing Pardew with someone better, that's why I don't think it can be Zola as the stats show he is a worse manager than Pardew is.

I'm concerned about Cortese running the club without the experienced and guiding influence of Markus

I disagree. Markus's influence is very much still there. Markus bought his good friend Cortese a watch before he died as a gift in advance for securing promotion this season. I can't see Cortese doing anything that purposely jeopardises Markus's faith in him.

With Trousers on this, sort of excited who the new man will be.

The timing of AP sacking is questionable but, it was on the cards and has been for a while. I was not convinced that this side would get promoted as AP how somehow got a side together that is too inconsistent proven by some very up and down results last year.

I like AP but lets move on, this is football, these things happen. perhaps hold off NC before all the facts are there.

"These targets for sustained and significant progress embrace both the First Team and the Football Development & Support Centre as integrated, co-operative units".

I may be reading too much into the statement but this suggests that maybe AP hadn't bought into the new structure. I would imagine Les Reed has a fair bit of influence now and to all intents and purposes is Director of Football. Easier I suppose to bring in a manager aware of the existing structure rather than trying to impose the structure on the existing manager who it seems was not happy about it.

Also, given his reaction at the end of the Bristol Rovers game perhaps it was goodbye and he knew it was coming.

Gunn was sacked after the next game, a Carling Cup 4-0 win away to Yeovil. Does this mean NC = Delia Smith?

I wonder of Liebherr's death has anything to do with this? Ie perhaps he wanted Pardew to stay on, so Cortese's hands were tied? Liebherr's suddenly dies, NC allows the dust to settle, then acts...

In some ways at least this has now happened - rather than things festering in the background. Cortese HAS to come up with the goods now though - someone with a proven track record, good motivational skills and who can hit the ground running (think I'm describing AP!).

Good luck Alan. I know you will be snapped up quickly, and be a great success wherever you go next. Thanks for giving us the most enjoyable season we'd had for some time last year. You've left us with a squad equipped to win this league. The pressure is on you Noe NC...

I'm disappointed with this decision but not surprised. A 'contact' at the club told me only last home game that AP was on borrowed time. To be honest, I really did not believe him as I felt that AP would be given until Xmas. It seems, from what I have been told, that AP and NC did not agree on the way forward. I hope NC knows what he is doing.

Absolute joke!! What a continual farce this club is. I thought Cortese wanted to bring stability to the club?!

Also who is going to WANT to manage us when they know he is this ruthless?! We won't get another high profile manager that's for sure!

PL - level facilities

Some good players

good organisation

Transfer budget.

Yeah, which loon will want to manage us ?

(Oh, and many are reasonably certain the replacement is lined up already)

Very very sorry for Pardew.

The were several people on this forum who told us this was going to happen.

I have a feeling Markus's sad passing away may have delayed a change that had been agreed a while ago.

I hope that I don't have this sick feeling when we release a manager again for a long long time.

There are going to be a lot of people on here with egg on their faces. The "In Cortese We trust" brigade who denied that Pardew was being lined up to be sacked last season must be looking rather foolish as it's rather obvious that those rumours were absolutely on the money. It's an absolutely insane decision. To sack Pardew pre season maybe, but to sack him with 3 league games on the clock is madness and it puts any chance of promotion into real jeopardy. Days before the transfer window? I n s a n e...

In all honesty, we need to take a look at the way Cortese runs the club as to sack a manager, after a 4-0 away win on game three, tow days before the transfer window closes is just insane. Add to that the alienation of the press and certain other, shall we say, less popular decisions with some sections of the fanbase and you have a real issue....
