Yes my mate has just texted me saying that the title is already over - he supports Wednesday. Last Sunday morning for our team's second friendly of the season he more or less turned up in Wednesday's full kit - he's 34 by the way. I've just replied that I have given up any hope of the title after four games (I know some on this forum have but I haven't).

we ain't going to win the title. we might make the play offs, get to Womberly for the final, go 3-0 up at half time and then do a Bournemouth and throw it away by 90 minutes. 2 minutes of injury time and we lose it 3-4.

That's our season over then. Why didn't AP spend the summer looking for a skillfull midfield player in case this happened? No excuses, no injuries, no nothing.

Are you for real? Even without lallana we have enought to win this league! Please stop typing if you have nothing positive to say! I worry about some people.

Looking and finding one at this level is not easy, especially as if lallana had not got injured they would not play

Great result and performance by the sounds of it, should do the player's confidence the world of good too.

Also a bit relieved as I suspect Wednesday and Peterborough might be threatening to take off. This win + our game in hand should mean that even with our mediocre start we'll be right on their shoulders, ready to pounce when they screw up.

I know you are a real Saints supporter...I just think you are being led up the garden path by some really naughty boyzz...think for yourself...

That was a superb performance. We really put on an impecable show. AP was right when he said the pressure was off away from SMS. I'm loving it :-)

I'm delighted we've won well. I've seen all the games at SMS and I'm not going to be convinced by an away win, away from the expectations at SMS. The bedrock of any season is the home results and Pardew hasn't yet worked out how to break down massed defences at SMS.

Today I was chatting to one of the 1976 FA Cup players who has hundreds of first division appearances, he was critical of the team not seeming to have the belief in itself and thought they were fragile and some of that had to be down to the manager, he felt that playing so narrow played into the hands of the opponents defending their space, that Davis really needs to help out his defence at corners into the goalmouth and that he should be taking charge and punching. He went on to say that tactics are all very well but most importantly the manager has to lead the way.

He told me about coming in at half time at the Dell when we weren't playing too well, Lawrie MacMenemy said 'Don't look at me, your the ones playing poorly and messing it up, you sort it out' Immediately Mick Channon suggested something, other players came in and the team decided how to play, then went out in the second half and won easily. He thought that demonstrated great man management and the confidence of the team was sky high by deciding themselves how they were going to play, going out totally positive knowing what they were going to do.

In reality the truth was that Lawrie Mac was not really a good football coach or tactician as such..England was a perfect example not all Graham Taylors fault.

But Mac did a lot of good things for Saints..persuading big signings..motivation etc..

Yes he was a man Manager and a good motivator.

I understand on most matches the senior players..ala Channon, Ball etc decided tactics or change of same..

Many different characters in management....

Glad to see you are slowly coming round to Pards great abilities..

Mac like Pards was ultimately responsible for the end product..but the players and fans were a great help for the end product....

Knee injury, pardew is very concerned.

The surgeon said before the Plymouth game that he couldn't see anything wrong and that there were now only two options, open it up and look giving four weeks out or if if it breaks down about six weeks so see what happens. That's why he has been playing, it could well be that it has now finally broken down.

I don't think you can compare LM and AP. MacMenemy walked the walk, Pardew talks the talk and until he sorts us out against massed defences and in the winter on poor pitches he is still work in progress for me. I'm not convinced.

Absolutely delighted that Lee Barnard got his goal. I've seen the Plymouth & Bolton matches so far and, for me, he's been the pick of the bunch up front. He covers an enormous amount of ground, holds the ball well, lays it off well and he's more likely, at the moment, to score from outside the box than anyone.

Strikers live on goals and he'll be chuffed. So will Rickie; if he can get one every match when he's not playing at his best, that'll do us.

AP said he wanted a winger to keep pressure on lallana and puncheon and was hopeful of getting someone in before window shuts. this will gather even more pace now.

Have faith..Pards is well on his way to being a Saints legend....

We are well on the way to being a very useful side.....Consistency will come and Pards is putting together a very nice squad...

Another good signing on the arizon...

Lawrie Mac was ok some of the time but Pards is our future....

AP is a great manager and we are very lucky to have them, football has changed from 30 years ago, I don't want the manager going in the changing room and asking players what to change I want him to have the answers can you imagion Jose Mourinho, Alex Ferguson being like that!!!

think both Fergie and Mourinho listen to players, but make up their own minds

Absolutely terrible result...how AP could allow the team to settle for 4-0 is beyond me...I hope those boo boys had a good loud boo at the team throughout the entire game. Or then again...perhaps we ARE promotion candidates after all? Perhaps AP is a fantastic Manager that will get us promoted? Perhaps we have got a superb L1 team to be proud of?

Mmmm...happy times indeed. COYS!

About bloody time too. The season started three weeks ago. It's the preparation FFS, now after four hard games we get it together. I hope this is the last time we see silly mixture teams playing 45 mins at a time in meaningless matches. Barnet, Sutton, Eastleigh etc a total waste of preparation time. Plymouth, Leyton Orient, Bournemouth and Bolton and now we are finally competitive.

I knew you'd be upset I suppose that buys AP a couple more weeks bummer.

That was a brilliant performance. Could have easily been 6/7/8. Rovers had a few chances but only when the game was out of their reach. Davis made a fantastic save in the first half. MOTM was easily Fonte. Dealt with everything and so calm and cool with the ball. Not one player played bad today. Got a few videos of two of the goals for those who couldn't make it.

Just back.

Positives - Martin (playing alongside Fonte is a bonus) but he improves with every game.

Barnard - worked his socks off and deserved the goal, although he could have had 3 or 4 in the last 10 minutes when we ran them ragged.

Guly - nice little cameo at the end - Carlton Palmer or Patrick Viera you take your pick. Dickson - who replaced Lallana - soon got into the groove and linked well with Harding. Good close control by both players near the touchline.

Lallana was good in the first half and his injury was bizarre as he went down while watching Schneiderlin's poor pass sail into the stands after the 2nd H kicked off. He walked off the pitch without limping and I would hazzard a guess that he tweaked his old injury. Butterfield was steady and even Hammond did OK as did Puncheon. I felt in the last 15 minutes we toyed with them a bit and we could have been more ruthless.

In the end it was an extremely comfortable away victory as I have ever seen but had a speculative shot of theirs gone in instead of hitting the bar with 20 mins left it might have been a different story? Perhaps not.

Just 2 Negatives and being a bit picky - Lambert way off the pace, Schneiderlin anonymous (but I am blinkered as to his talents).

Last time I saw Saints score 4 away was in September 1974 v Oxford, so 36 years later it was good to see another 4 goal "thrashing".

We MUST follow this up with a win on Saturday though. HAPPY DAYS.

Finally, met Nick I in the pub afterwards and got the inside story re his ST - but not for this thread. Just going to enjoy a very emphatic performance which I did not expect. The players reaction at the end was interesting as there was a lot of fist pumping and genuine enthusiasm, especially from Fonte. A good day out!

Total crap. We weren't competitive against Bolton? Or Bournemouth, who we beat? Or the first half of the Plymouth game? It's ridiculous to perpetuate this myth of us being absolute shi te for the first 4 games. We weren't, we just didn't win. If one of our many chances had been converted in those games, we would have been talking about narrow wins with the bulk of possession and pressure. We would currently have 9 points and you miserable bastards would be sat patiently waiting for a loss to start *****ing and whining.

Last week he trained and couldn't walk the next day so maybe its time for the op before he does more permanent damage.

this ^^

The main difference today was the goals went in. We've dominated every match this season (except Bournemouth who gave as good as they got) but failed to put chances away to day we did and we looked world beaters (well league beaters at least).
