Just back after a leisurely drive back. What an easy win it turned out to be although there were one or two opportunities for Rovers notably the excellent half valley fron their left sided player that hit the woodwork and some very difficult corners, but overall their forays forward were few and far between. Quite simply we were better in every area of the pitch, and in the end we started to carve them open. There will be much harder tests than this, but it feels good t get the promotion drive moving.

Davis 7 don't remember a save made, but commanded his area pretty well and caught a couple of corners.

Butterfield 7 solid enough and pretty composed. Went to sleep totally and waved the winger through when they hit the bar

Fonte 7 Just a little worried that he dives in thinking he can win every single ball, needs to jockey the striker now and then but then again I want a defender that is nasty and strong too.

Martin 7 Like how he made things his whilst others stood around, communication was good too. Some good passing some sliced clearances. A little worried about his lack of pace but when megged by Kaffour he recovered just enough to stop him.

Harding 6 Sone dreadful passing early doors, overhitting everything. Never beaten though and improved as the game went on.

Puncheon 7 May be accused of being greedy as he got caught in two minds in the first half, but then the next time he passed when he should have just gone on his own. I thought he had his best game for a while, Heavily involved throughout. Even his corners we bloody good in the first half, Poor in the second mind!

Hammond 7 Nothing outstanding but didn't do anything wrong.

Morgan 7 Decent. Never gave anything away and kept us moving.

Lallana 7 some nice touches before the injury. Not sure what happened as it was straight from the kick off and he wasn't involved in the kick to touch. Composed finsh from Hammonds mis**** shot.

Barnard 9 Worked his socks off offering himself to midfielders and fullbacks all the time. Deserved his goal.

Lambert 5 Missed two great chances in the first half and two half chance headers from corners. Didn't win anything in the air either. Nice pen, but not his best day - it just didn't need to be.

Dickson 7 lots and lots of runs, tackles and effort down that left hand side. Thought he drove us on excellently and pinned them back. Great asset.

Guly 5 woeful first second and third touches that had the terrace laughing at him, but he made a few tackles that calmed him down and he looked a realathlete to me. Pacey and big. Learned nothing here really as Pardew gave him 5 minutes including the injuyr time.

Connely 6 lots of great runs and should have scored when through and could have had two. Great to see him looking sharp and bright, brilliant sub to have.

Does anyone know if there was a police cameraman in the crowd? I can't see anything on the match feed on the BBC or the OS.

Yes they were filming the Saints fans who were on the terrace.

Kelvin made some world class saves.

Guly was awful.

Weird because the commentators made Guly sound really good!

he collected the ball, he didn't lift his head, dilly-dallied when an easy 5 yard square pass was on, then once he made his mind up he scuffed his pass. The whole terrace had a little chuckle as it had been calling for him to be brought on and then gave him a great ovation when he did. He made a decent tackle and then a couple of shirt passes. That was it.

TBF he didn't have much time. I still expect a lot :)

and then seemed to make out he was heavily involved in the passing.
nah, a few passes, one decent out wide but nothing much to hang your hat on. Still excited to see what he can do as he looks fast across the ground and is an athlete for sure.

Passed Bristol on the way back from Wales today around 13:00 and waved to the Saints fans. Heard the game on the radio and I think rating Guly as a 5 is a bit harsh - you do mention that he was on for 5 minutes and from previous ratings people haven't really rated 5 minute subs. However, from what I heard Guly appears to be what we need - passing to feet, watching to see who to pass to next - least the people behind me will be happy as I won't be shouting "Keep it on the f*cking floor" all the time with him playing.

As an aside, sounding like Dickson has exactly what we need, someone who'll go down the wing and get to the by-line and pull back a cross. Shame no one was there today :)

Very very happy with the result and well played lads. WIFM.

Came home from holiday to find the Swindon tickets on the door mat. Can't wait.

How about the fantastic one about 90 seconds before we scored our second goal?

no criticism from me (except that Pardew should have given him 5 minutes more) it was just funny. I'll go out on a limb, he will be an asset. Shame he was unabloe to play midweek. Would have been perfect for him.

apologies, that was decent, I was unsighted and wasn't even sure if it required a defender to help him out. I think 7 is still fair though. I'd add that his distribution was again solid.

I rate people on the basis that 5 is the starting point and anything above it is a positive and below and negative. I've only rated him because everyone will want to know how he especially fared, but in all honesty I didn't see anything much so haven't marked him up or down. By the way who said there is a rule that posters have to follow about whether they rate subs or not?

Finally back from the game.

Great result obviously - personally I don't think the performance was as good as we played for large spells against Plymouth and Leyton Orient, however the goals game - possibly because as the home team Bristol R. had to attack a little.

Lallana had a great first half - really hope his injury isn't too bad. Of particular mention also was Puncheon - I've read quite a bit of negativity on here about him over the past week or two but feel he had a good game today - if his shooting was stronger he could've had a couple today after cutting inside to create a chance.

Also, Lambert looked well off the pace. Hopefully it's just match fitness. Nonetheless he still has 2 in 2 in the league.

Spot on. I thought he was a brilliant signing and was slightly dissapointed to see in the Plymoiuth game that he doesn't have genune pace. But he has everything else and was amazed to see some had written him off after the Orient game. Genuine player.

I'd agree with that. It was a poor quality game and we didn't play that much football until we had scored the third. Stranhe to win 4-0 without playing all that well. Just a solid display from better quality players than Rovers have.

Yes what a great day really enjoyed the game and had a £100 on Saints to win @ 5/4 with corals. Very easy win could of been more on another day Lambert should of had 3. Like the chants to the Rover fans (who took it all in good faith and the Ball Boy who throw the ball away from Puncheon and took a lot of banter of the saints fan for his size (YOU FAT Bastard went as red as a beetroot and the old rover fan that showed his pants at the end) Dickson look very good as a sub for Lallana

Nursing a jager headache this morning but we played really well. Guly was woeful though. He even looked off the pace in the half time warm up. He simply cannot control the ball. Hopefully this is just nerves and a lack of sharpness, which will come hopefully.

Well done to the morons who threw food at the Bristol Rovers lads warming up.

Great win, as a salesman I look at how I am doing against last year, well by my reckoning we are ahead of last year both on points tally and league position after 3 games.

Should that really be surprising given the -10? ;)

Posted

Looking back on it, Hammond's not that good and Fonte is too good for this level. Thank goodness Barnard scored, otherwise his drought probably would have gone on for months.

Posted
so...we will defo win the league now..?

You should only ever put your mouth where your money is and yes I placed a bet that we would win the league.

I am sorry that some people on here want to slit their wrists because we only drew with Leyton O when we should have scored 6.

I intend to enjoy this season and if other posters on here do not then I am very sorry for you and you need to get out more.

Well, as mentioned, it was a good performance. Rovers were poor, which was surprising.

Davis - Two world class saves, not a lot else to do. 8/10

Butterfield - Steady, solid. 7/10

Fonte - Too good for this league. 9/10

Martin - Looked like an experienced pro, not a 20 year old playing his forth game. 8/10

Harding - Got stuck in, few wild passes but he's a left back, to be expected. 7/10

Puncheon - Had a good game, still needs to look up. 8/10

Hammond - Put himself about. 7/10

Schneiderlin - Didn't really notice too much. 6/10

Lallana - Brilliant before he had to go off. 8/10

Lambert - Well off the pace. 6/10

Barnard - Never stopped running, got his goal which he deserved. 9/10

Funniest moment of the day - The overweight ball boy who got his throw totally wrong and threw it over Puncheons head. Cue 'YOU FAT BASTARD' at him. Even the Bristol Rover players were laughing. Fair play to him though, he didn't cry.

A fantastic result, spoilt only by saints not conceding costing me 40 notes after betting on a 4-1 score.

I hope we now go on a good, unbeaten run of 10-15 matches that teams that are in the promotion mix up need to go on. 2 games into it I suppose.

I look foward to Saturday.

Well done AP and well done Saints.

There is a link for the goals, might not work first as it is still being processed.

Cheers mate. Must say our movement looked good for all the goals (the third up to the penalty). Was Lallana really not offside ?

Yes priceless and the old rover fan that showed his underwear at the end of the game, he took stick all game

i think the forward ball has to be intentional for it to be offside, obviously Barnard had a crack at goal the was mi**** so it wasn't an intentional pass, one of these things that are down to the refs appreciation really.

I've just looked at it again and he's comfortably onside. Yet another good decision from a lino.

I like the thread title. In other news, when Guly came on he sounded quality...

He didn't do anything, to be expected though really.

Dickson looked decent when he came on.

About bloody time too. The season started three weeks ago. It's the preparation FFS, now after four hard games we get it together. I hope this is the last time we see silly mixture teams playing 45 mins at a time in meaningless matches. Barnet, Sutton, Eastleigh etc a total waste of preparation time. Plymouth, Leyton Orient, Bournemouth and Bolton and now we are finally competitive.

There wasn't much difference between yesterday and the last four games, we just managed to finish a few of our chances.

Posted
Was Lallana really not offside ?

Agreed. There must be something wrong with our goals yesterday. We are totally useless, underprepared and lacking depth of squad, so I can't believe we scored 4 legitimate goals. I'll get back to you all when I've found something.

Posted (edited)
He was miles onside FFS.

I will accept he was "onside" but not "onside FFS". He looked offside from the highlight that I've seen.

Thanks for demonstrating how webmongs like you ignore anything positive I say about the team though. Dont know whay I should even bother to be balanced, its not what you lot want anyway.

Had another look, I agree he was well onside at the time the ball was struck.
