No, i'm moving next week. Want to come with me and dig some wells?

I just obtained the entire discography of David Bazan, the guy behind Pedro the Lion and Headphones, and i'm dying to put it on my iPod and listen to it while reading the rest of my book. Maybe i'll just go to sleep.

I haven't been to bed since the start of the season and won't until Saints win a league game. It's a bit like the Newcastle facial hair malarkey, except slightly more dangerous.

Right, I'm off to work. Got a long drive in my 40ft truck to Germany.

transfer fees are strange but would say £1m is about double his value

Then I would say you were wrong.

I would also say that you would almost certainly be arguing the exact opposite point of view if we had signed Antonio and someone were to criticize him. Everyone on here knows perfectly well that you always post with an agenda, and that agenda is to support whatever the club happen to decide to do - right or wrong.

Nutshell. Very succinctly put.

What a joke - why o why didnt we insist on a purchase clause with the loan - from memory we had 2 loan periods in which to sort this out. I feel in my heart that we should be owed money now for developing the guy! What a f**k up!

Like, isn't that why we can somethimes borrow a player from a Prem club without necessarily paying all his wages?

Presumably we could just wait till January and then make him an offer as a free transfer for the start of next season if we reallllly want him. Paying a million at the moment would be IMO over the odds for him.

Great point.

Suggestions of paying £1M for someone who can't get into a mid-level Championship side are misguided IMO. Puncheon cost siginficantly less than that and was in the League 1 team of the season. OK, with Antonio you may get more of a player for the future, but we need a player for the now. Now isn't the time to be investing for the future, it's for finding a player who can come in and do a job at this level right now. Antonio still has plenty fo developing to achieve before I'd consider him a genuine starter for us in this league anyway, he had too many average/poor performances intermingled with good ones last season for my eyes.

I would say that a players value is however much other teams are willing to pay for them. So for Antonio, going by the supposed bids we've put in, that's about £500k.

Anyone remember when people said Antonio was ****? He's probably not even as good as Nathan Dyer.

There are two factors to consider - long-term team building to compete at the next level, and what is needed to get to the next level.

Your proposal would help with the former, but not the latter. Personally I think our transfer activity should focus on getting out of here, and worry about the rest later.

Assuming for one minute that NickG's completely unempirical 500K is the going rate for a player of Antonio's stature and experience, I would have gone up to 750K if I had been NC. Simply because if he helps deliver promotion, we would get that additional investment back in a flash.

And there you have a massively simplified analysis of the problem.

Firstly, because no-one actually has any idea whatsoever of how high in the negotiations Cortese was prepared to, or did, go.

Secondly, because it assumes that it's Antonio or nothing; tick tock, but there's still time to spend said amount on another player who could well have as much as or more impact as Antonio.

And thirdly, because it identifies one position (and an impact player position at that) as the dividing factor between our poor form now and the guarantee of promotion.
