Hmm Stevo is off to Turkey....

Perhaps I should have a chat with some of my contacts......

Oh hang on, isn't someone else taking the Side Door over that way?

Efes and Ravi Yaki. All the Turkish you ever need to know

Perfect outcome. Played well against a (weakened) Premier League team but no more Carling Cup games to interfere with League 1 game preparations. Just need to get knocked out of the JPT in similar honourable fashion now.... :-)

Sounds like a stunning atmosphere at Notarf Krap. NOT!!!

1500 less than us, and I wouldn't mind betting there is a pretty big Palarse following to bolster the crowd up.

Eric.

Mate.

Look, it was bad enough being late on parade because I was watching a French movie and I DO apologise.

but NOTHING, simply NOTHING can justify you sitting there with pubs FULL of OSH all around you

right on 1)

Ravi Yaki is best described as the Turkish version of Arak

Which will of course mean nowt but is an aniseed based drink favoured in "The Levant" Jordan, Syria & Lebanon. Very similar to Ouzo. Normal practice is to buy a bottle with a meal and sit and drink it with water slowly.

Best advice - if on a package and they start that game - run. If on a business trip - always look for the seat nearest a plant pot. But in case, at the airport in UK make sure you buy a standard pack of Boots Nurofen and take one after two glasses.

Meanwhile enjoyed the game tonight. Shows we have enough quality to give (almost) PL level teams a good game.

We showed why our players are L1 standard by not converting the chances though.

Extra shooting practice needed methinks

Just back, decent game but it showed how far we have to go to get to Prem standard. Although we had more possession and shots, in truth Bolton reserves had plenty in hand and could have stepped up at any time.

agree with the shooting practise , did anybody else watch the warm up . Players taking shots Lambert converted 1 in 9 attempts , Barnard only converted 2 , Hammond 1 . Lambert looks all out of sorts at the moment , his free kicks were embarrasing tonight , certainly not the Lambert we all know and love , the free kicks cant be blamed on fitness . We need players like him to come to the party or there wont be a party at the end of the season .

2 more signings urgently needed to have a chance of automatic promotion

Just back from the match.

An entertaining game that we dominated for about 80% of the time. Apart from their goal, Kelvin wasn't bothered that much apart from a couple of occasions, whereas their keeper was by far the busier. We had a succession of chances and should have scored at least a couple with better finishing. It was typical Saints, playing much better against supposedly better opposition. Being a Premiership team, Bolton at least did not come to park their team in front of their goal and try to hit us on the break like LO and Plymouth. They tried to pass it around, allowing us to show what we could do too. And most impartial observers would say that we were the higher division team. At least we looked up for it and won most of the midfield balls with snappy tackling, but with a referee too ready to blow up for fairly innocuous tackles we risked having a player sent off, Schneiderlin being the most likely candidate. Most of the team put in good performances, with Puncheon being the frustrating one having an off day. A succession of corner kicks he took failed to beat the first man, although he showed some good touches at times. Lambert also didn't seem to be quite himself either, blasting a couple of free kicks into row Z, which isn't like him.

I think most will have gone home happy that we had done ourselves proud against a team two divisions above us. It took them half an hour to break us down and then it seemed as if they were hanging on for most of the rest of the match.

It's lucky for them that we didn't play our new Brazillian player tonight, or we would certainly have won it. ;)

Out of the Carling, but I'd prefer to have a decent FA Cup run, although this season we could do without too many distractions.

ok we played well and lost to Prem team. We need to win Sat though.

Kinda glad we are out as this cup is really not important and risky picking up injuries/suspension in them.

Agree with Wes, in general a good all round team performance young Martin impressed me Davies did not get much change from him. If we can play at that tempo and take our chances we should be ok, thought the ref got it wrong when he booked AL should have been a pen. One concern was the pitch seemed to cut up a bit.

It wasn't their reserves though. Granted that they didn't play all of their first team, but it was several of it and there were others on the bench. If the gap was so wide between us and Premiership standard, then how come we dominated them. It didn't look as if they were capable of stepping it up and had we managed to score, things might have been totally different.

Good game, thought we played well but still lack the cutting edge. Lallana had a blinder and should have scored (and probably had a pen as well). Morgan & Deano were much better in midfield, wonder why that was? :) Only player I would say had an off night was Puncheon, he's a bit lightweight and flat footed at times. God knows what's up with Ricky, he's like Rooney in the World Cup at the moment, looks disinterested and jaded. Was the right decision to take him off. Aaron Martin did pretty good no doubt playing against a boyhood hero. Everyone pales alongside Fonte but he did at least as good as Jaidi and Seaborne.

Listened on Saints player.

Sounded like it was easily our best performance of the 4 games so far this season. Am not overly bothered that we lost, was pleased to hear that we seemed to play well.

Still keen to see us go on a winning run, as we are in some danger of falling into a cycle of "unlucky" draws and defeats.

I think we still need some more options from the bench (again, Connolly and Chamberlain are our only gamechangers).

I think I'm going to start to hate Jason Puncheon as well.

Im sorry i dont get this with punchon. I thought he was the best player tonight and pardew said he was terrific. He kept the ball and created quite a bit. Lallana was good for one half. His corners and free kicks were cack but he retains possession. Did anyone hear whether we will sign another player (winger this week)?

Posted

I was going to get concerned at our lack of ability in front of goal, but i'm off to Ayia Napa tonight so don't think i'll bother. Party time.

Posted

Puncheon is frustrating but it's worth keeping him on because he has the ability to create chances with ease, just not 100% at the moment. As he gets older he'll become more consistent and hopefully learn to pass quickly and nit take as

many people on.

I can't explain why I dislike Puncheon so much.

Maybe he flatters to deceive.

Might also be because in our present starting XI I assume he's the one supposed to have electric pace. He has some pace, but low voltage.

Posted

I thought we played very well tonight, Puncheon was much better in open play but his crossing from dead ball situations were poor again. Hammond a much better game, Lallana along with Barnard were outstanding. Good performance from Martin next to Fonte. Lambert struggled tonight which hopefully is just rustyness.

Posted

See lallana played well first half but faded in second. I didnt think barnard was great. Punchon never hides and I thought he was better than lallana and everyone else overall tonight.

Well, at least the blame for not winning can't be laid at my door as I've not long got home after driving back across France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Switzerland. So after Plymouth and the Os it's still only 1 win in 4 and a half years living here. You may all contribute to a collection so that I don't make it to the Charlton game at christmas and the one at New Year...

I'm disappointed, but from the reports of those that went seems we played well but still not clicking and finishing. Of the three cups this is possibly the least important, imo. I wasn't surprised Jaidi didn't play; that was a change I expected

Plenty of chances, but we have to learn how to score again though.

Typical Saints. They get into our box ONCE and we fall asleep and score.

Deja vu Plymouth and Leyton Orient.

Defensive concentration needs improving, as do Puncheon and Hammond

I agree -Puncheon is clearly hate figure of the month. Yes - he did deliver a couple of duff dead balls but he gave their left back a torrid time for much of the game. He was even better in central midfield - which I can't help feeling may be his better position.

Davis 6 - one good save, otherwise not much to do, kicking erratic !

Butterfield 6 - solid but not much going forward !

Fonte 7 - pushed forward late in the game and threatened their backline !

Martin 7 - no nonsense, kept Davies in check, better than Jaidi on Sat, should start v Brizzle !

Harding 6 - worked hard but didn't really inspire !

Puncheon 8 - always involved but looked better in middle than out wide (after Chamberlain came on) maybe this is his best role !

Schneiderlin 7 - kept probing, got stuck in !

Hammond 7 - big improvement on last Sat, playing for his place now ?

Lallana 8 - great in 1st half, ok in the 2nd, came close a few times !

Lambert 5 - looks unfit, poor set pieces, not himself, right to be subbed !

Barnard 7 - worked his socks off, desperately needs a break for a deserved goal but not as good as Sat !

Subs:

Chamberlin 6 - looked dangerous but too little time to influence the game with his pace !

Connolly 6 - sharp, made an impact, but (as above) not much time to get into it !

Mills 5 - saw little of the ball, guess it was just a runout for him !

All IMHO of course !

Puncheon was tremendous tonight. I just don't get the stick he gets. He will misplace passes and fail to deliver all the time, hello, we're in Division 3. The nipper gives us something, along with Lallana, that is different to most sides in the bottom 3 Divisions, a bit of something different, a bit of creativity. We've got 2 of these beauties! Enjoy their influence and frustration! For some reason, people are waiting for him to **** up every time he gets the ball. I don't get it. Same reason, I guess, Le Tiss got next to no caps (and I remember him getting stick regularly) and Hoddle 50 short than he should have done. Then again, what do I know. I thought Martin was, try as he might, extremely limited tonight, yet another correspondent above felt he was the bees knees......
