alpine_saint Posted 23 August, 2010 Share Posted 23 August, 2010 I've only just got in and haven't got time to read through the whole thread, so would I be right in thinking that Alan Pardew's getting a Brazilian, and that he'll see how it's working out in January? He also reckons it might be a bit risky, hence the temporary arrangement. Meanwhile, Alpine thinks it's probably too much of a risk and thinks that Pardew should be looking for something he's more certain of. Is that about the gist of it? Yes. Bartosz Bialkowski Posted 23 August, 2010 Share Posted 23 August, 2010 Because he wasnt good enough for our first 11 prehaps? Arguable, but we most certainly could do with his impact from the bench. Its a squad game, you need more than 11 first team quality players. Waigo would be welcomed into any squad in this league, and many in the championship. I have faith enough in Pardews judgement though, there must have been a good reason why he was let go, and I cannot believe it was down to ability. madruss Posted 23 August, 2010 Share Posted 23 August, 2010 The best thing about this signing is that he clearly specialises in a position that we've been crying out to fill for a long time. When was the last time we had a genuine attacking central midfielder with an eye for goal and some creativity? Anders Svensson maybe?! (And he was played on the left quite a lot) Guthrie? Either way, looking forward to seeing a different dimension to our play with this sort of player in the team / squad
positivepete Posted 23 August, 2010 Share Posted 23 August, 2010 Eh? 5 goals in 34 appearances in the league? That's an amazing rate! Granted a lot of those were as sub, but the reason he was sub so often was that he was better as a sub and often faded out of games after starting. He was a great squad player, but not the world beater a lot of people seem to be making him out to be. I would wager that Waigo will play more matches at a higher level than most if not all of the Saints players in the team last season save Connolly. For one thing he has the pace for the top level, and I still maintain that a decent proportion of his offsides were down to the fact that our players were not quick enough to spot his runs. madruss Posted 23 August, 2010 Share Posted 23 August, 2010 his replacement, or Hammonds? This. Unless we're playing 4-5-1, in which case he'll be replacing Barnard. I reckon we're just one pacy winger / striker short of a pretty damned awesome squad (and yes I'd be delighted if that winger / striker was Papa!) Smirking_Saint Posted 23 August, 2010 Share Posted 23 August, 2010 I thought Waigo was pretty good and under-utilised when he was here TBF, and you can't really say he should have got more goals as he played mostly on the right. Most talented player we ever let go ?? Dunno about that one but IMO he was better than Turk's assessment and probably not as good as cliffords. I heard a rumour however that Waigo just didn't want to be here and didn't like pardew so if true that answers the not staying arguement. As for Shearer, he was quality but at the time wasn't it the record transfer fee for a short while ? So was hardly let go.
Smirking_Saint Posted 23 August, 2010 Share Posted 23 August, 2010 In fairness, its a reasonable point you and Turkish have made. We dont know if Antonio and Papa would have delivered as permanent signings, we just felt confident they would because of how they performed as loans. No way to be 100% sure of no Sagnowski Syndrome. I suppose I will feel better once Goolie has shown what he is made of in a few games' time.. I'm sorry what ?

Nearly all the players mentioned were transferred for a big fee or didn't want to play for us anymore. As for Waigo it definitely sounds like he didn't want to stay which is understandable, we could have definitely used him to raise our pace in the two league games so far. A lot of chickens are being counted on here but this guy hasn't played yet. If he is as good as Waigo he will be an asset. It will take some weeks to see. How about we see how he does against Bolton, after all he should be able to rip them up considering his "blistering pace" and "ball control" as after all Bolton aren't known for their speed or finesse. This ^^^ Papa had some great moments in a saints shirt mostly in the JPT though. When he was playing well he was class. When he wasn't he didn't even look like a footballer. I'd of liked him to stay becuase he gave us a different option to change games. You do have to chuckle though don't you. If the guy was any other nationality would the media put his country before his name? But because he is Brazilian they do. It is as if every manchild born in Brazil plays like Pele! He may well be Brazilian but he is signing for an English 3rd Divison club.

saintscottofthenortham Posted 24 August, 2010 Share Posted 24 August, 2010 I would wager that Waigo will play more matches at a higher level than most if not all of the Saints players in the team last season save Connolly. For one thing he has the pace for the top level, and I still maintain that a decent proportion of his offsides were down to the fact that our players were not quick enough to spot his runs. In any event this thread is about his probable replacement, and I wish Guly a warm welcome to our club. Sorry pal, but that is totally wrong. Waigo clearly struggled with getting to grips with keeping onside from the start, and continued to do so. It wasn't a question of him looking for a ball and then being offside by the time the ball made it's way to him. It was a problem where he would constantly be in an offside position WHEN looking for the ball. It was infuriating to watch, because he had the pace over near on every single defender he come up against... But this was Papa Waigo. I loved the guy. Never before had I watched a footballer able to completely and utterly baffle himself, but he managed it time and time again. For this reason, I will miss him... But IMHO he wasn't a good footballer. Final ball was horrific with what must have been 90% of his crosses going out for a goal kick before even hitting the near post, and although he scored some crucial goals for us, none of them were "good" goals and he did miss some guilt edge chances. Don't think I'm slagging the guy rotten here, I loved him, but I am pointing out why I think (and probably AP thought) he just wasn't worth the £500k + that he would have set us back to make the switch permanent. There are better options for that sort of money.
