...after Peckhart went off, when was the last time that happened? Serious question.

Almost all were English as well - awesome

I loved last night, havent truly enjoyed a game like that in I dont know how long.

Surman is from South Africa

Born there yes but lived here for many years and qualified to play for England. More English than Zola Budd, Tony Greig or Basil Dolivera ! What is more he lives locally, so not just English but Southampton.

The lack of foreign mercenaries is real plus this season.

I'm not even British and I care! Good to see teams with players from their own country. I preserves the different styles within the game.

Personally as long as the team is winning, I couldn't care less where the players are from.

Right, so basically you are publicly endorsing having a team of players that have been brought up in a Belgium cellar and have a grandfather for a dad? That's sick.

So you would suddenly start caring if we were losing?

yeah but, does anyone know when the last time that happened - 11 Brits. I would hazard a guess, not being one of the historian chaps, that since Golac we have had a non-British player in the team continuously. There is every likelyhood that come Saturday v Cov we will have an all British starting 11.

I don't recall any foreign players in the team in the late 80s early 90s, when we had the likes of Le Tiss, Rod Wallace, Dodd, Flowers and Ruddock.

Monkou?

I seem to recall us playing Arsenal in the Forgotten league with them fielding a full team of foreigners.

I truly belive for the nations best interests in World competetion a select number of players must be from their homeland.

All IMO of course

Chelsea at home on a boxing day at the Dell; Chelsea fielded the first-ever all-foreign starting X1 in an 'English' game.

Must have been around 2000? 2001?

Score? We lost I'm pretty sure. 2-1 possibly?

Chereidnik and Gotsmanov. OK, neither played much.

McLoughlin & Grobbelaar are others I can think of, off the top of my head.

That's not an unusual angle at all. The question is, has this lack of community identity contributed to the sterlisiation of our beloved game (along with Sky money and russian mafia chiefs etc). Personally I started supporting Saints because I had pride (and still have pride) in the City where I grew up. To compete with all the big name foreigners in the Premiership, we need to develop a unique angle which will help us survive. If home grown players cannot get in at Man Utd or Chelsea the hope is that they will see an opportunty to play regular first team football with us and develop their career. Let's face it, unless someone takes that responsibility, where will our England players of the future come from?

Ideally I would like to see a good Saints side taken all from local schools but that is not realistic. This is the next best thing.

The first-choice team in 1983/84, which achieved Saints' best ever league position and an FA Cup semi-final, was not just British but entirely English - Shilton, Mills, Dennis, Agboola, Holmes, Wright, Williams, Armstrong, Wallace, Worthington, Moran. This was after Golac had left, though he did return later on.

I don't get too excited about fielding a 100% British team, though it's certainly a novelty these days. What matters to me more than nationality is having a team with a good number of home-developed players - of the team I've named above five were home-grown (six if you count Wright, who was very young when he came here from Oxford).

Rueban Agboola the Nigerian international?

Ah yes - I'd forgotten about that! I'm pretty sure he was as English as he was Nigerian though - like John Fashanu, had a Nigerian parent and could have played for either country. And I have a feeling that he only played for Nigeria after he left Saints. OK, I'm clutching at straws here...

Maybe I should just say that this supports my view that players being home-developed, rather than of any particular nationality, is what really matters! ;)

Rueben Agboola was as Nigerian as Andy Townsend was Irish!

I actually thought David McGoldrick was from Northern Ireland - but doesn't that make him a Brit technically?

I always get confused on that. What is the difference between Britain and the United Kingdom?

DMcG was born in Nottingham, so he's English. He qualifies for both England and Republic of Ireland (and probably Jamaica) through family but as far as I'm aware hasn't represented any of them.

.

Not sure, but I would hazard a guess at 4th of May 2008, just after the final whistle.

Ace fact. Surely this should provide the club with a bit of favourable media coverage, and potentially make us more attractive to a British based takeover.
