hamster Posted 17 August, 2010 Share Posted 17 August, 2010 Had to have a go at this. Brilliant Thread btw. '76 - living in gillingham but knowing my heart was in southampton, so excited seeingit on TV that I as did every kid on our estate went straight over the park and played 'fa cup knockout', and i was saints. Man U wins (home and away) all the epitome of football dreams coming true. I don't really mind when we lose to them either (relegation season excepted), they really are a joy to watch. KK - called downstairs to watch it on 'News at 10'. words cannot describe 'that' feeling, one day soon eh! ZDS - wembley (i think), it was a bit of a blur tbh. JPT - see above Markus buys club - jumping up and down in my front room, texting like a loon. Markus dies (God rest his soul) - just heard the news from a friend within the club (no name dropping attempt here, just not important) whilst at a meetig and solemnly told my son, who said and i quote "what like when you said Saints were signing Michael Owen" and I said "No! this is TRUE. It is very sad news, he was a great man, he cared about'stuff'. Markus has died". "****" he said "that IS sad". I then went outside and texted any one i know the sad news (attention seeker for sure). Funniest text I have ever received was from a lad I work with, he replied "Markus who?". I will never evr let him forget that, but I must admit that i did laugh when I read it. My bad. That's all, Good thread, lot's of, how you say, 'feel-good factor'.
Pecho Lobo Posted 17 August, 2010 Share Posted 17 August, 2010 1976 - at home in Cardiff watching in the lounge. Had moved to Cardiff the year before and couldn't get tickets for the final despite my Dad's best efforts, including sending in a request for tickets in an envelope decorated in red and white stripes with the team formation on the back and with the Saints crest drawn in expertly (my Dad was good at art). The idea was that it would get noticed and get us tickets. It didn't! Even before that, 1974 or 1975 I think (I was 9 or 10) watching a Mick Channon hat trick against Bristol Rovers in a midweek game, a Tuesday night at the Dell in the pouring rain. Stood on the Archers with my Dad, OWTS ringing around the ground and the windmill celebration. Keegan signing - heard after school in Cardiff from the news. Ridiculously exciting. 6 - 3 Man Utd - driving home past the Claude Pub in Cardiff having just played footie , laughing/shouting to myself in a mixture of disbelief and total pleasure. Le Tiss last goal at the Dell, (like a number of other posters on here I too was directly behind the goal at the Milton). As close to a feeling of pure euphoria that I have ever experienced in life, let alone football. Maybe it was because I had been there for some other seminal Matty moments, including his hattrick against Leicester in March 1987 on a snow and slush covered pitch in atrocious conditions. I was studying back in Soton and had left Cardiff on international rugby day (Wales v England if memory serves). The contrast between Cardiff on an international day and a dank looking Southampton made my friends question my sanity. On the train down I thought that the game was going to be postponed. Matty's sublime third goal slaloming from the half way line through half the Leicester team made it all worthwhile. Watching Matty score v Man Utd twice at the Dell from the bench to complete a 4-1 victory to knock them out of the League (Littlewoods) Cup, a result that ushered Big Ron out and Alex Ferguson in to the manager's office at Old Trafford. 2002- taking my 3 year old son and my Dad to Le Tiss's testimonial . My son can't remember it really but at least he can truthfully say that he saw Le Tiss play. The JPT - at Wembley. A couple of recent ones - the two wins last season away to Bristol Rovers, great atmosphere on the terraces and the 5-1 in the League was as enjoyable as any game in recent memory. Markus - at home getting a text . Staring in disbelief. Hopefully another memory to add to the list on Saturday against Orient - I'll be at St Mary's. zigsdad Posted 17 August, 2010 Share Posted 17 August, 2010 (edited) Cup win 76 - At home in our front room (couldn't get tickets). You can still see the dents in the ceiling from when we all jumped up when the goal went in - followed by the longest 8 minutes of my life.... Keegan signed - Saw it on Newsround and went nuts! Saints put the sixth past Man Utd when Egil scored- Driving a van full of my stuff through Bristol as I was moving house St Marcus passes away - Sitting by Lake Garda checking the latest Saints news, quickly followed by texts and phone calls :-( One special moment for you - So very many.. 1st game at the Dell 0-0 vs West Ham 23-12-72 (Thanks, Dad) 1979 LC Semi-Final second leg vs. Leeds & going to Wembley for the 1st time All those great games in the early 80's - Keegan, Channon, Ball George etc (especially a 3-2 home win over L'pool in 1979) with my all time hero Nick Holmes Following the '84 win at Krap Notarf on the radio and going crazy at the end while I was living in Sheffield (no-one understood quite what it meant) Keeping in touch with Saints while living out of the country for most of the 90's - early days of Saintslist, dutch teletext website etc, before the advent of SaintsWeb in its many disguises. Back for the last game at the Dell and the move to SMS The wall of yellow and abide with me in Cardiff Play-off away at Derby - ending up several rows further forward when Rasiak scored! :-) The emotional roller coaster of administration and the take over Taking my kids to their first ever Saints games... plus JPT at Wembley with 2 of them Probably next Saturday v Orient... Quickfire Double Posted 17 August, 2010 Share Posted 17 August, 2010 Cup win 76 - Wasn't born until '78 Keegan signed - As per above, I'm too young to remember that one! Saints put the sixth past Man Utd - Listening on the radio in Gateley Hall on Archer's Rd, screaming. LeTiss last goal at the Dell - Just out from having a tattoo done in Brighton, periodically checking the scores on my phone. Well chuffed, if a little sore. St Marcus passes away - Checking footy news on my iPhone on the train home from work. Saw the "Markus Liebherr of Southampton Football Club" headline on Newsnow and clicked through expecting some sort of feature on the saviour of SFC. Wish it had been. Special moments - Franny's goal, sat in the West Stand, Milton End, telling my brother it was pointless Franny coming up for a free kick because he'd never scored! The Great Escape win over Everton - had to pay £60 for a ticket in the Archer's, best £60 I've ever spent. JPT Final, obviously, only time (so far) I've seen us win a trophy. FA Cup final at Cardiff vs The Arse - true pride in defeat, moved me to tears that day. Matty's testimonial (Simply the best), last Dell game v Brighton ("stand up if you've got your seat!" Still got two of 'em, one red one white! First ever match Boxing Day '91 2-1 win over Man Citeh courtesy of Matty and Barry Horne. Pahars v Pompey from the comfort of the Northam. 4-1 walloping of Spurs in the FA Cup. All of them special memories of many SFC related. God, I love the Saints!! fareham saint phil Posted 18 August, 2010 Share Posted 18 August, 2010 Excellent thread and some good (and bad) memories Good times! 76 cup final, the old stadium the smell(!) the delight the journey home everything stays in your head Keegan signs, living in Cumbria at the time and only found out the day after, sat there on my bed in disbelief Saints were talk of the school and me being the only Saints supporter (probally in cumbria!) everyone was asking me about it, i knew nothing but lied as if i knew everything, good time Promotion to the 1st division, listening on a radio in my bedroom to whatever radio station it was at the time (radio 2??) biting nails as Saints and spuds "played" out a 0-0 to both get promoted Cardiff FA cup final, pride in everything red and white or should I say yellow Changed shirts at the Dell, thinking my wife had gone mad when she said "thought they were playing in grey the first half" looking up and then having a 10min convo with the bloke behind me on "they cant do that" lines but of course it was manure they could!! great escape, first match for my son and all going to the macdonalds in hedge end after the match and getting our meals for nothing just because we were saints supporters Saints being saved, punching the air in the living room watching SSN Bad times any relegation, sitting in the stadium thinking will we ever get back up again Markus, SSN disbelief shock sadness the whole 9 yards
Ex Ringwood Saint Posted 18 August, 2010 Share Posted 18 August, 2010 Just remembered the Everton great escape match....Could not get tickets, and could not get Solent up in Slough so drove down to Rownhams and sat on my own in the car park listening to the commentary !! Sad I know but it brings back happy memories of that escape that season !!!
Saints4Prem Posted 18 August, 2010 Share Posted 18 August, 2010 Cup win 76 - Couldn't get a ticket so watched it at home with family and my first child aged 3 months (she was wearing a very small red and white knitted scarf). As Bobby scored we all screamed and frightened her half to death. Did go out in Southampton that night and for the bus tour next day and can still remember the great atmosphere Keegan signed - I remember seeing it as I was doing my paper round. It was in the Echo which used to have a space for "Stop Press" at the bottom of the back page. It said Kevin Keegan signs for Saints. I got home as my dad came in from work and I said that I was surprised we would sign the Norwich goalkeeper as he was too old (He was called Kevin Keelan) I could not believe we would make a signing like KK but was elated when we turned on the TV and saw it. Saints put the sixth past Man Utd - Listening on the radio and going mad. Marcus passes away - Sadly about to travel to Canada got a phone call from my mum as I was staring at a text from a very sad poopey colleague asking "who's your owner now" . Unfortunately here for 3 weeks so miss the Orient game but will be thinking about everyone especially on Saturday. Thanks for the pictures of the tributes and just wish I was there. Special moments -MLT testimonial he was superb in goal! I am sure it was this game where Ian Wright fell over in the penalty area when the ball was miles away and got a penalty, real comedy stuff and a great night. FA Cup final at Cardiff real pride as we won the singing and were by far the best supporters. At JPT Final great atmosphere (even took the wife! However she will not be at another match as she was the reason Carlisle scored having just said "it would be nice for the other team to score as they have been trying very hard". Thanks for some great memories at a very sad time.

Islander Posted 18 August, 2010 Share Posted 18 August, 2010 Good to have a 'memories' thread at this time. For me it's: 76 Cup win - At Wembley - sideways on to the goal as the ball went in! RIP Bobby and thanks. KK signed - my Mum phoned me at work (and she NEVER phoned at work as she thought it wasn't right!) The 6-3 - At the Dell, West Stand laughing hysterically as the 6th went in! Last Goal at the Dell - Same place as the 6-3 and remember shouting NO! as Chris Marsden nearly got in the way! Markus passing - My son phoned me while we were on the way to see him to take him and his GF out to dinner and I thought he was being impatient. Was shocked and stunned - we raised a glass to Markus later. RIP.
amsterdam Posted 18 August, 2010 Share Posted 18 August, 2010 Keegan signing - my Nan worked at the Potter's Heron and brought back a signed (paper!) napkin from him - wasn't really into footie in those days so didn't appreciate the significance... April 27th 2001 - got married; more importantly, Saints beat Liverpool 3-1 and my best man (a Scouse fanatic) grinning through gritted teeth as I got the band to play "OWTS" for the 100th time... 6-3 vs United - listening to the radio in the car in the Sainsbury's car park on Purley Way in Croydon in joyous disbelief; refused to go shopping until the final whistle. Shamefully burst into tears listening to the radio with MLT getting the last goal at Dell... Surprised at my sense of loss when reading on this site that Marcus had passed away - like losing family...

Quite a few at the ground were in tears too, and the number of NOOOOOOOOOO when we thought CMFG was getting in the way, fitting way to say goodbye to the old place, many good memories from there, but i am surprised just how many memories i have from SMS already most good, first win, Beattie and the skates, MLT testimonial, and only a few bad ones, Leeds still cant believe that, 2 relegation's bad times
dellboypete Posted 18 August, 2010 Share Posted 18 August, 2010 Everyone mentions 1976 - one of my memories was for the draw fro the semi-final. I was at uni oop north and was one of the lucky ones to get a ticket for the 6th round at Bradford, but went back down to soton saturday night to celebrate at home! Was driving back to uni on monday (in my much loved mini countryman - the one with the wood) listening to the semi-final draw on the radio. I nearly came off the road when we got palace, i was so excited. Had we got manure or derby in the semis I doubt if we would have made it wembley. The other one I often recall is the last league game at The Dell. I was working rotation in the Yemen and managed to get to enough games that season to get a ticket. I was sat right in the back corner of the West Stand (Milton end). Sitting next to me were a group of about 5 or 6 real old timers. Two of them had been season ticket holders since the war and they all seemed to be well into their 80's. The saddest thing was that none of them were going to migrate to St Mary's (of course they may have changed their minds). At the end of the game I sat chatting with them and we were some of the last people out (shows how long we stayed!!). It was a really moving experience. I was sad as I had started going to the Dell in the mid 60's, but i was really looking forward to St Mary's. I often wonder if any of those old fans did in fact go to St Mary's. Under Weststand Posted 18 August, 2010 Share Posted 18 August, 2010 76 cup final sweet & sour for me I was 10 yards from booking office when the final ticket was sold so couldn't go. But watched in ecstasy at home with the family as Bobby Stokes stroked it past Stepney & 7-mins later the Cup was ours fantastic. 78 at Brisbane road Orient 1-1 draw Tuesday night all but gave us promotion barring a 12 goal swing on the final Saturday at home to Spurs. What a great night that was must have been 12,000 to 14,000 Saints there that night. The day Keegan signed I was an apprentice at Wellworthys in Lymington in the tool room, a united supporting mate Pete came ambling over to my machine & told me we'd signed Keegan, I told him to f**k off & wouldn't believe him, rushed home on my bike & put Solent on & had it confirmed, I just can't describe the feeling that we'd just signed the European player of the year. No ones mentioned his 1st game blazing sun shine at a cram packed dell Under West-Stand(where else) Channon scores both in a 2-0 win against Man City that was an awesome atmosphere. I'd moved op north by the time we beat United 6-3 I was decorating at the time with the radio on & I was dreading a come back every time they went over for another goal only to be overjoyed when it was another Saints Goal. Boy did I have a good day at work that next Monday. Was at work when Mike came up at break time with his I phone & said he'd just seen on Sky that Markus (RIP) had died I was shocked, then checked my mobile & had it confirmed by the wife who had text the bad news. FreemantleSaint Posted 18 August, 2010 Share Posted 18 August, 2010 I was born in 1979 so sadly too young to have seen Saints win the FA Cup or to remember Keegan signing. But here's a different one for you:- The morning of either the '84 or '86 FA Cup semi-final - standing with my Grandad outside his house in Milton Road watching what seemed like hundreds and hundreds of coaches passing by as they set off for London (this being before Milton Road was made into a cul-de-sac). That memory will stick with me for as long as I live and I think gave me a taste of the excitement that football can bring.
FreemantleSaint Posted 18 August, 2010 Share Posted 18 August, 2010 I'm also wondering if anyone can remember being at a reserve game at The Dell when the score has been read out of an amazing first team away win? In the days when the reserves played on the same day as the first team. The best I can do is when Glenn ****erill scored two belters to give us a 2-1 win at Spurs after being one day. Not quite amazing though!
Poshie72 Posted 18 August, 2010 Share Posted 18 August, 2010 Cup win 76 - Was only 4 so dont remember it. Although my 1st memory of the saints was them bringing the cup home. Keegan signed - Again too young to remember Saints put the sixth past Man Utd when Egil scored- Upper West Stand Milton Road End. Went on holiday to Turkey straight after the game, boarded the plane and ended up sat next to a very unhappy Man Utd fan! St Marcus passes away - Just walked in as my mum phoned to ask if I had seen the news. I thought she was kidding :-( One special moment for you - So many memories, from the Cardiff Final. Matt's last goal at The Dell, the JPT Final, hearing that we finally had a buyer and the saints lived on, beating Liverpool 4-1, the change of shirts by Utd at half time because they couldnt see each other against the fans! The 2003 semi-final.. the list is endless. The worst day as a saints supporter was, again on holiday in Turkey, and finding out that we had been relegated from the Premiership. Although I did find a fellow saints fan, proudly wearing their shirt that evening in a local resturant.
bender Posted 18 August, 2010 Share Posted 18 August, 2010 1976 at Wembley going mental with all the other Wimpson/Weston lads The day KK signed sat in the Saints Supporters Club pint in hand nearly spat in it over Graham Bakers wife (young lady at the time) as she worked behind the bar. Imagine a Prem Leauge wife working behind a bar now. KK signing - thats when I decided to support saints. Will never forget Higginbum leveller at Palace in 2005. Ran into bathroom and jumped all over bath nearly breaking neck. Will never forget shock of last Wednesday. Went on OS and the headline just came out to me. I couldn't afford to go to away games then but the first team were away at Everton and won 3-0. Sadly, it was also the day we got relegated. Wasn't it lovely when Mums stayed at home and always told the truth! I was at work and, yes, my Mum called to tell me. She wasn't the only one. The news spread like wildfire through the office. sadoldgit Posted 18 August, 2010 Share Posted 18 August, 2010 In 1976 sat in the United end trying to contain my emotion when the lads paraded the Cup around the ground in case I lost my teeth. At Orient crushed against the wall but popped out on to the pitch just before the wall collapsed. Walked off the pitch with the players celebrating the draw that took us closer to promotion. Sat at work when the phone rang with my Dad telling we we had just signed Keegan. Happy days.
dubai_phil Posted 18 August, 2010 Share Posted 18 August, 2010 Just a couple of added magical moments that Saints have given me that popped up while reading many of the others. The chance (at my age) to walk out onto SMS and hit a football into the back of the net (thanks Club & Granty), fulfilled a life long ambition at my age. Connected to that, the look on my son's face when he walked into the Home dressing room and saw a Saints Shirt hanging on a peg with his name on it. I will NEVER forget that moment. Orient Away when we went tumbling to the wall. And of course - one nobody has mentioned yet but we talked about before... The Drive down the M3 in '76 seeing everyone on every fly-over and dancing on the Round-about at the top of the Avenue/start of the A33. And the other '76 memory that came flooding back was the Dell car-park on the Saturday night when Cup Final tickets were going on sale on the Monday morning. Camping out by the entrance to West Stand centre, swapping portions of the massive tin of Heinz Curry I had cooked on a camping stove for beers, Playboys or just cigarettes at 4am. BUT, the one that hit me the most these past few days. I parked up in the Car Park with my lad having just bought fish & chips about 2 hours before the FIRST forum game in May last year, when everything was up in the air. We were just sitting there, looking at the stadium and we both said at the same time.. I can't believe we're going to lose all this...... We walked around the ground, we walked in the reception and the Changing Rooms and onto the pitch and saw everything as if it was for the last time. I will NEVER forget the memory of how hollow I felt looking for what I thought could be the last time. And then a miracle came along. It simply is NOT fair, right or just that he cannot share the Journey he started

St.Jeweller Posted 18 August, 2010 Share Posted 18 August, 2010 was only telling a lad today at work how i remember the best strike of a ball on a plastic pitch was by Glenn Co ckrill at Luton in the last few minutes of a cup tie to take them back to the Dell. Think there was a ban on away fans at the time but were allocated tickets as it was a cup game which made it even more special.

alpine_saint Posted 18 August, 2010 Share Posted 18 August, 2010 Always found it funny that the first season of "Auf Wiedersehen, Pet" has Oz (Jimmy Nail) referring to Keegan joining Saints AND leaving Saints. It..was..that..big. A never-to-be-repeated coup. He was European Footballer of the Year at the time, FFS.
