alpine_saint Posted 11 September, 2012 Share Posted 11 September, 2012 Congratulations Andy Murray. Long time coming, but you did it. I had a nagging suspicion that Olympic gold might unblock the mental dam that has been holding him back. I hope that your much-missed school mates were looking down and enjoying that too. Minty Posted 11 September, 2012 Share Posted 11 September, 2012 Lendl has made the difference. A perfect example of just how your mental preparedness can really affect your performance. Well done Andy, onwards and upwards.

Saintandy666 Posted 11 September, 2012 Share Posted 11 September, 2012 Just setting in now. And I think it is a valid point that has been made by many that Andy has won his first Grand Slam in an especially tough era. Federer, Nadal and Djokovic won theirs against Philippoussis, Puerto and Tsonga who with the greatest respects are no where near the players the latter 3 are. He has always been good enough to do it, it's just been the mental block and I feel like that is gone now. I think he will win the Australian Open. Thedelldays Posted 11 September, 2012 Share Posted 11 September, 2012 what sean connery said... "I always felt he had everything and now it's really come to fruition. I met him for the first time a couple of days ago. It's great for Scotland. We've had a really great landslide victory. And stop saying he's British, he's Scottish. Saintandy666 Posted 11 September, 2012 Share Posted 11 September, 2012 (edited) That may be what Sean Connery thinks, but it's not what Andy Murray thinks. As an article I read pointed out earlier, he lives in England, has an English girlfriend and much of his team in English. He also covered himself in the Union Flag and sung the national anthem and bar one comment in response to teasing by a reporter many many years ago when he was only 19(who is media trained at 19?!) there has never been anything to suggest that he hates England or doesn't consider himself British. Every indication he has ever given is that he considers himself Scottish and British, just as many English people consider themselves English and British... not that it matters in the slightest to his win! Edit: On a bit of research, I note that Sean Connery is a big supporter of the SNP so he is inevitably going to try and make the anti-British point. I also note that he is a 'Knight Commander of the British Empire'. Maybe if he feels so strongly about Britain in this way, he should hand back his title. bridge too far Posted 12 September, 2012 Author Share Posted 12 September, 2012 The wait for an English grand slam champion goes on. THAT will be something worth supporting. You're right of course. Because the last British Grand Slam champion was born in South Africa - Virginia Wade. As predicted, I shouldn't have stayed up to watch Murray because no sooner had I got to sleep than I was woken up as my daughter's second baby was on its way! Delighted to say that their daughter arrived at 2 this morning (she was only actually in labour for about 4 hours) and everything's totally amazeballs, as they say. Proud Nana here

norwaysaint Posted 12 September, 2012 Share Posted 12 September, 2012 Interesting to see that despite Murray doing well, the next British male is ranked down at 200, whereas the women have 3 in the top 100 and two just outside, one of whom only just dropped out of the top 100. As far as British tennis goes, Murray seems to be the exception, but the women are improving a bit.
